The Royal Palace, whose Spanish name is Reales Alcázares de Sevilla, dates back to the Middle Ages and looks back on a long and very varied history. Built for King Pedro I on the ruins of a Moorish fort, the Alcázar is a striking example of Christian architecture, combining Moorish elements from the long period of Moorish rule. Evidence of the so-called Mudéjar architecture was erected from 1364 and continued to be expanded over the centuries by subsequent rulers. The Alcázar was already the residence of the rulers of the Mohaden, a Berber people. This has remained the case to this day, the Spanish king and his family always stay in the royal palace in Seville when traveling to Andalusia.

Europe, Spain, Andalucia, Almeria, Centre, Art installation (slightly cut)

While processing the previous shot, I remembered that I captured another love lock shot some years ago, way down in southern Spain, in Almeria. It’s an art installation and an example of communal art. On the shiny structure in the middle is a fitting quote: “Es propio del amor si es verdadero, compendiar en un ser el munda entero” – “It is characteristic of love, if it is true, to summarize the entire world in one being” (Ramón de Campoamor).

Victoria and Albert Museum:

Examples of the works of Art in the Museum – South Kensington Museum – Published in 2 Volumes in 1881 – Book 1 - Plate Nos: 37 - 42

Sometime ago I posted some of the illustrations from the above book and I hoped that would be able to find them physically in the museum and photograph them. I took the third set of 15 illustrations from this book and went on the V & A website; Search the Collections. My results were based upon the following criteria:

(1) Items I did locate and photograph.

(2) Items that were in storage

(3) Items I couldn’t find anywhere

So I will be posting them, along with their locations in the museum, against the original plate and photograph from storage (where possible). The original price and any further information I might find.

One thing I didn’t count on, was that renovations would alter the interior of the building so drastically. I have found it very difficult to pin some of these locations down but in the main they have been found.

Not many of the examples shown this time were successful, as can be seen I only found 1 item.

Kinkaku-ji "Temple of the Golden Pavilion"), officially named Rokuon-ji, lit. "Deer Garden Temple"), is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.

The garden complex is an excellent example of Muromachi period garden design. The Muromachi period is considered to be a classical age of Japanese garden design. The correlation between buildings and its settings were greatly emphasized during this period. It was a way to integrate the structure within the landscape in an artistic way. The garden designs were characterized by a reduction in scale, a more central purpose, and a distinct setting.

A minimalistic approach was brought to the garden design, by recreating larger landscapes in a smaller scale around a structure.

It is designated as a National Special Historic Site and a National Special Landscape, and it is one of 17 locations comprising the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto World Heritage Site. It is also one of the most popular buildings in Japan, attracting a large number of visitors annually.

This is one example of the decaying grandeur of an old Soviet spa in Georgia.

In the 1920s, Tskaltubo was a thriving spa town with an exclusively Soviet clientele. Citizens would flock here as part of a state-funded health program on sanctioned vacations meant to reenergize them while they contemplated socialist ideals. If the workers were healthy, as the theory went, the workforce would be healthy and thus more productive to support the regime.

What a lovely example! Still in regular use, and I was lucky enough to find it parked by one of the metro lines one day.

Due to a number of reasons (soft temperatures, lots of rain,...), my local area is seeing a huge amount of snails this year.

While they can be an absolute nuisance (if you're into gardening for example), some of them can be quite photogenic as well.

Doddinghurst, Essex – All Saints

These are more examples of Essex Churches that show the Architecture, the Interiors, the Exteriors and especially the Stained Glass Windows that I have taken over the last two to three years. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did visiting them.

Doddinghurst is a village about 3.8 miles outside Brentwood in Essex and the Church is situated in Church Lane.

The church was built in the 13th century with additions in the 14th (the timber-framed belfrey) and 16th centuries(the timber framed porch to the south door). A large part of the interior of the church was restored in 1887 as was the exterior. Here the walls were either rebuilt or refaced.

One of the bells in the tower was cast by Robert Mot who also made one for the ‘Mayflower’, the lead ship of the ‘Pilgim Fathers’.

The Bell Tower itself was in poor condition, so in 2001 restoration took place allowing the Belles to be rung again.

There are some fine examples of Victorian stained glass throughout the church, a nice church to visit.

Topiary is the horticultural practice of training perennial plants by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and subshrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes, This example was seen in the garden of The Charterhouse in Hull,

Perfect example of same thing, different light, DIFFERENT thing... I've visited these two before, a few weeks back, but at night (in comments, below). The light makes the difference, which is why I love photography so much... I'm having a lot of fun late day sun, even mid-day sun - A lot different from the night photography I've spent a lot of time doing. New things to do, to play with... I love it so!!!

An alternate view of the SS Creteboom at rest in the River Moy, Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland.

This is a 2-seat version and is used to give extremely expensive passenger rides.

I have mixed feelings about these modern, 2-seat conversions. Apart from a couple of one-off examples, there were no two-seaters during the war; your first flight in a Spitfire was strictly a solo affair. In the late 1940s, a small number of 2-seaters were manufactured (or converted Mk IXs) for the Indian and Irish Air Forces - about 17 in total. In recent years, several more, otherwise perfectly serviceable, Mk IXs have been butchered to make 2-seaters. The revenue from joyrides helps keeps the single seat aircraft flying. Even so, the T9s are my least favourite Spitfires to see, and I rarely photograph them.

This aircraft, MJ627, is a genuine war survivor and is known to have shot down an enemy aircraft. It appears to be one of the original batch converted for the Irish Air Force in 1950.

If you fancy a flight in the back seat of a Spitfire, be prepared to hand over about £3,000/$4,000 for a 30 minutes experience.

An iconic example of mid-century modern telecommunications architecture, stands as a striking testament to functionalist design. Rising 279.2 meters into the sky, its sleek, cylindrical form is punctuated by a series of observation decks and antenna platforms, creating a rhythmic interplay of mass and void.

The tower, clean and unadorned, emphasizes its sculptural purity, while the stacked horizontal elements provide a dynamic contrast to its otherwise monolithic verticality. This interplay of geometric forms evokes a sense of engineered elegance, where function dictates aesthetics with an almost minimalist restraint.

Photographed in isolation, the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm becomes an abstraction of itself lines and curves distilled to their essence. The structure’s stark contrast against the sky enhances its imposing presence, transforming it into a solitary beacon of modernity. This is an architecture of utility elevated to an art form, where simplicity and precision converge to create an enduring visual impact.

Substance and consideration

Example of convergent evolution c humming birds of the Americas

Here is another example of my favourite style of wildlife photography which shows smaller bird images in the context of their environment. In this case it shows six King Eiders in flight with small icebergs in the background. They are not especially common in Svalbard but females nest singly around tundra pools, but as soon as the males have mated they congregate in all-male flocks to moult, leaving the females to rear the young alone. This explains why the vast majority of birds we saw were flocks of males, although these males were accompanied by a single female (second from left). I photographed this flying flock in Kongsfjord on the west coast of Spitsbergen.

Not great, but pretty impressive considering the level of effort on my part. I'm impressed by the program's ability to match the mood, color, and overall composition vibe of the image.

Just a reminder (with an apology) that we are still around, and will soon be back into the Spring swing of things after a much needed break from life in general (Dad, that is, not me) to help look after his Mum (thankfully along with several other caring siblings--she's 94!), also, he's heavily involved in the writing game now trying to hack out-

Not way too crazy about this one, but figured I should post something. I guess I'll post it as a failed post-processing example :)

Sorry about the lack of posting, I'm in the middle of my last exam.

Explored.. The one in this series that WAS :P Flickr is so stupid some times.

Here you can see how early car manufacturers used lead (instead of Bondo) to fill in roof joints. Notice how sanding (file) marks are still present in the lead. More importantly, just how thick the early paint jobs had to be to cover these scratches up.

An example of Majorelle Blue from the house in the garden.

The Majorelle Garden is a twelve-acre botanical garden and artist's landscape garden in Marrakech, Morocco. An archaeological museum, it contains the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech. The edifice was designed by the expatriate French artist Jacques Majorelle in the 1920s and 1930s.

Majorelle was the son of the Art Nouveau ébéniste of Nancy, Louis Majorelle. Though Majorelle's gentlemanly orientalist watercolors are largely forgotten today (many are preserved in the villa's collection), the gardens he created are his creative masterpiece. The special shade of bold cobalt blue which he used extensively in the garden and its buildings is named after him, bleu Majorelle - Majorelle Blue.

The garden has been open to the public since 1947. Since 1980 the garden has been owned by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé. After Yves Saint Laurent died in 2008 his ashes were scattered in the Majorelle Garden.

The Church of St. Francis, an example of Sicilian Baroque, the original building was in Arab-Norman style with three naves and twelve altars, in addition to the main one.

In 1680, Msgr. Francesco Maria Grifeo (then bishop of the diocese ), he decided to turn it into baroque style, the two side aisles were demolished, and the nave was raised and covered with a barrel vault.

He was then reopened for worship in 1703, to be closed again following the earthquake of Belize in 1968, during which the church and the adjoining convent suffered significant damage. In 1977 the restoration works were started.

[ CPP Project example 10.04 II ]

This is yet another image that's part of my experimental CPP double exposure photo project -- the second from my recent collaboration with LaDonna Chaos.

UPDATE: I should add some info about this photo. The experiment at the point of this composition was conducted by running the same roll of film through 2 cameras. That's essentially the CPP Project -- having 2 images randomly combined to see what we can come up with. The last public showing was subtitled "cultivating accidents in the camera." With this image, you get a panorama shot mixed w/ a regular format, along with misaligned frames, creating the odd lines (that give it an almost collage-like feel that I like). I enhanced the lines a bit real quickly in Photoshop. I'm not sure if it worked. The original had severe exposure problems, so I was just playing around trying to salvage something. :)

Let's see, you can read more about my CPP project here:
