My 2007 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX

The first edition of the new monthly event "GeekyScience". One a month, scientific experts come to discuss an overarching theme.

This month, we did Evolution.

Dr. Kat Arney - Tree Trunks & Tumours: The Evolution of Cancer

Dr. Katie Slocombe - The evolution of language: what do chimpanzees have to say?

Dr. Adam Rutherford - From Chuck D to Chuck D: Evolution, Synthetic Biology and the History of Hip-Hop

Tecnologie al servizio della filiera dell'olio d'oliva.

A quick illustration of what a car travelling at light speed sees when it turns on headlights. Obviously, cars don't go at the speed of light and reality doesn't look anything like what I've illustrated (all space would compress to a single point, which is sorta why photons are massless and spaceless), but it does show some important stuff in special relativity. All criticism is accepted and noted - this will not be realistic.

The Evo garden was started with the idea of it being a teaching area. So we will talk a lot about Evolution which is a simple idea but can actually be very complicated to grasp. Evolution is based on the process of adaptation. Adaptation is the way in which an organism will change to better suit its changing environment. Sometimes it is very difficult to understand how can someone that is a moss (for instance) suddenly not be a moss anymore? Now it is a fern? Well when I talk about the Process of evolution the important word to note is “Process” . These adaptations can sometimes take a very long time. And many changes in a organism (which we call a mutation) may not work! Then that species may die out and not pass on its genetic material to the next species. So, not all adaptations are very successful.

Fluke shot as it was coming around a sharp S bend

A test shoot to get me back into the saddle after almost a year I think.. Not a great day to do a shoot but I tried to work with it. Learning again that sometimes you don't need to shoot wide open. Then learning again to do my own research on locations and time of day. Learning to take control of the shoot entirely and making do with what I got.
