Mid October 1985, Mount Everest trek
After weeks of relentless rain, landslides, and flooded trails on the return trek to Kathmandu, the swollen Dudh Khosi had become a bottleneck for everyone fleeing the mountains. Bridges were washed away, and the only way across was a precarious basket suspended on a rope, operated by locals for a fee of 5 rupees. In the pouring rain, trekkers, porters, and villagers alike waited anxiously for their turn, eager to leave behind the hardships of the trail and return to the comforts of Kathmandu. High above, the mountains were buried under fresh snow, while down below, the river roared with the force of the still lingering monsoon.
The picture was originally photographed on Fujichrome slide film with my Nikon FE2 camera and 50mm lens. I photographed the slide by bracketing it with a Nikon D850 camera and enhanced the picture in Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz.
The Annapurna Circuit is a trek within the mountain ranges of central Nepal. The total length of the route varies between 160–230 km (100-145 mi), depending on where motor transportation is used and where the trek is ended. This trek crosses two different river valleys and encircles the Annapurna Massif. The path reaches its highest point at Thorung La pass (5416m/17769 ft), reaching the edge of the Tibetan plateau. Most trekkers hike the route anticlockwise, as this way the daily altitude gain is slower, and crossing the high Thorong La pass is easier and safer.
The mountain scenery, seen at close quarters includes the Annapurna Massif (Annapurna I-IV), Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Manaslu, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Pisang Peak, and Paungda Danda. Numerous other peaks of 6000-8000m in elevation rise from the Annapurna range.

A renowned Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the remote Himalayan Sherpa village of Tengboche at an altitude of 3,867 metres (12,687 ft) - a couple of days away on the classic trek to Everest Base Camp in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal.
A stunning Kongde Ri with a fresh dusting of December snow looms large in the backdrop at 6,187 metres (20,299 ft).
The monastery was destroyed by a fire in 1989 when Nepal was still a Kingdom. It has since been rebuilt. Today, several family households and an active monastic community of about 60 monks reside here. Life centres around prayer, meditation, and Buddhist studies in the Tibetan Mahayana tradition.
The devotional way of monastic life in Tengboche now stands out in stark contrast to the yearly hustle and flow of climbers, trekkers, tourists, and sadly, an incursive environmental footprint of rubbish and human waste that seriously compromises the original charm and pristine beauty of this spectacular mountain refuge.

Located in Khumjung Village Development Committee of Solukhumbu District in Sagarmatha Zone in north-eastern Nepal. The Gokyo Lakes are considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists. About 500 Hindus take a holy bath in the lakes during the Janai Purnima festival, which usually occurs in the month of August. The site is worshipped as the residing place of 'Nag Devata' (Snake God); a temple of the Hindu deities Lords Vishnu and Shiva is situated at the western corner of the lake. The belief that birds and wildlife in the area should not be harmed has traditionally protected fauna.
Thamserku (21,806 ft) towers over the boreal forests of Nepal. Although Nepal is not technically a kingdom anymore, the Himalayan scenery along the trek to Everest Basecamp feels medieval. The peaks are more majestic than your wildest expectations and the friendly villages and cliffside monasteries feel like were dropped there straight out of a storybook. Nepal is that rare place that makes you feel like you are stepping back in time to a simpler era.
Pumori s a mountain on the Nepal-Tibet border in the Mahalangur section of the Himalaya. Pumori lies just eight kilometres west of Mount Everest. Pumori, which means "Unmarried Daughter" in the Sherpa language, was named by George Mallory. Climbers sometimes refer to Pumori as "Everest's Daughter".

Ama Dablam is a mountain in the eastern Himalayan range of Nepal. The main peak is 6,812 metres (22,349 ft),
Ama Dablam means "mother's necklace"; the long ridges on each side like the arms of a mother (ama) protecting her child, and the hanging glacier thought of as the dablam, the traditional double-pendant containing pictures of the gods, worn by Sherpa women. For several days, Ama Dablam dominates the eastern sky for anyone trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp. For its soaring ridges and steep faces Ama Dablam is sometimes referred as the "Matterhorn of the Himalayas."
The small Himalayan Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar (3,440 m, 11,286 ft) is the main trading centre for the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal.
Situated close to the border with Tibet to the north, and several days further east on the high-altitude foot highway to the renowned monastery in Tengboche, the Khumbu Glacier and Everest base camp.

Postscript: Trekking in Nepal more than five decades ago was no simple matter for most travellers and non-professional climbers - little or no information or trekking infrastructure and no serious maps readily available. Opted to trek solo from teahouse to teahouse along the classic high-altitude foot highways and caravan trade routes, first from Pokhara north to the Mustang district of northcentral Nepal and the border with Tibet (unfortunately without a camera, but with a required police permit obtained in Kathmandu), then to Namche and Tengboche in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal.

The Khumbu Icefall is an icefall at the head of the Khumbu Glacier, at 5,486 metres (17,999 ft) on the Nepali slopes of Mount Everest not far above Base Camp. The icefall is regarded as one of the most dangerous stages of the South Col route to Everest's summit. Huge blocks of ice tumble down the glacier from time to time; they range in size from cars to large houses. It is estimated that the glacier advances 3 to 4 feet (0.91 to 1.22 m) down the mountain every day.
Strong, acclimatized climbers can ascend the icefall in a few hours, while climbers lacking acclimatization or experience, can make the journey take 10–12 hours. People who have died in the icefall and whose bodies have not been recovered have reportedly shown up at the base of the icefall many years later as the ice continually migrates downward toward Everest base camp
