Although a small event was held earlier at Aylestone The Leicestershire Aero Club's first major air display was held at the clubs then new home at Desford Aerodrome on September 14th 1929. Billed as the first Leicester Air Pageant, it was opened by Mr. F Montagu, the Under Secretary of State For Air, the event featured RAF Siskins, DH9's, air racing, barnstorming, 'Comic' stunts, a parachute decent from Danish-American Parachutist John Tranum as well as over 30 private aircraft visiting & pleasure flights that went on to dusk.
That first event was such a success that the Club organised a second the following year on April 19th. Health & safety certainly didn't seem quite as strict as it is these days with crowds wondering across the runways at the first event & at the 1930 event an Avion ran away without a pilot causing the crowds to run out of the way whilst others tried to halt it's path before it ran into another parked aircraft which happened to be full of passengers. No one was hurt unbelievably.
1930 also saw the Club organise an Air Pageant to celebrate the official opening of nearby Ratcliffe Aerodrome owned by well renowned aviation enthusiast & MP Sir Lindsay Everard. The very successful event was opened by Sir Sefton Branker & special guests included Amy Johnson (Mollison). In 1931 the club helped with another Pageant at Ratcliffe which included possibly the first ever night time flying display in the UK. 10,000 people attended. The club helped put on several more events at Ratcliffe in the following years
In 1935 the Club had moved from Desford to operate the all new Municipal Airport at Braunstone & a grand opening air display was organised which was followed by several more displays over the next few years. In addition to this the club also helped with air displays at another local airfield at Rearsby.
Following the WW2 the club had moved to the former RAF airfield at Leicester East (known to locals as Stoughton aerodrome) & on Saturday 11th August 1951 the first of many annual air displays where held here. This first event at Leicester East was titled 'Leicester Festival Air Rally and Display' & although it was held in wet conditions included an afternoon flying programme including a Bristol 171 Helicopter, RAF Vampires, Tiger Moths from the RAFVR at Desford & an international element in the form of the French Aerobatic Team the Patrouille d'Etampes which ended badly as the solo aircraft (Stampe) overturned onto it's nose after hitting a concrete 'block' whilst taxying in after a stunning demonstration including aerobatics down to 30ft.
These fairly small displays continued throughout the 1950's to & attracted crowds of 10,000 plus many UK based civil acts, RAF & Navy aircraft as well as Sabres from the RCAF, rocket assisted take offs in Seafires & the Wymeswold based Meteors from 504 R.Aux AF which where regulars.
Throughout the 1960's the Club suffered financial difficulties & the shows took on more of an 'open day' status until 1968 when Tony Moy of local travel company Page & Moy began organising the event & making it into a more rounded day out not just for aircraft enthusiasts but the Family as well. It worked as the show began to attract bigger annual crowds & started attracting more major aircraft participation from both the Military & civil scenes.
Highlights of the 'Tony era' throughout the late 1960's 1970's (Tony was the commentator as well) included 'Colonel Crackshot' amazing 'shooting balloons whilst sat on the tiger moth wing' act, Charles Boddington & his Barnstorming team featuring Barry Tempest's scary (albeit very safe) crazy flying, The RAF' Jet Provost teams including The Vipers in 1969 The Poachers in 1971, Gemini Pair & the Blades team in 1973 & The Swords in 1974. A bit of coup was a very early display from a Harrier from Hawker Siddeley in 74 plus other RAF items including the Vintage Pair, Lightning, Hunter, Falcons, BBMF, Varsitys, Vulcan etc plus the one & only display at Leicester of the Army Blue Eagles in 75, Rothmans aerobatic team the Royal Navy Sea Fury also appeared
1976 saw Tony's last event as organiser although he remained as chief commentator along with Mike Whitehouse & Angela Hollins until 1992 after which Flypast Magazine's Ken Ellis & Robert Rudhill took over & Tony's final show saw the first ever display at Leicester of the Red Arrows plus USAF Phantoms & Tony's wife wingwalking.
1977 saw the show taken over by Leicestershire Aero Club member John Whittacker. Whilst Tony had got the show well known on the airshow calender, John's time on the show saw it go from strength to strength attracting huge crowds, international aircraft & earning a reputation as one of the best civilian airshows in the UK, certainly as aero club organised events are concerned.
The Leicester International Air Display (as it was now known) was now an annual fixture on the August Bank Holiday Sunday & at it's peak during the 80's attracted crowds of 50 to 60,000.
It's overseas 'pulling power' included the Canadian Air Force Tiger Romeo F104 Starfighters team in 1978, 1980 & 1982. Also from the Canadians came the Dash 7 in 1984 & 86 & a very rare flying display by a C.P 107 Argus, Italian Air Force participation included a Tornado duo in 87 & the Fercce Tricolori in 1990, More F104 Starfighters from the German Navy Vikings duo in 84, 85 & 86 & a solo German Air Force example in 1988, Royal Jordanian Falcons in 79 & 80,Many USAF aircraft including the C5 Galaxy, F111, A-10, F-15,F-16, F4 & Bronco etc Sadly the Royal Morrocan 'Green March' & a German Tornado never made it as planned but the Dutch Air Force F16 (1993), F27 (93,94,95) & Pc7 (95) did to great effect. Plus from France the Patrouille Martini, Ecco & Cri Cri Teams & from Hungary, the Team Malev in 1994.
A big coup on 1981 saw the very first in service public display of the Tornado thanks to RAF Cottesmore plus Concorde stole the show in 1984,85,86,87 & 88 plus annual visitors included The Marlborough Team, Harrier, Jaguar, Lynx, Vulcan XH558, BBMF, Falcons, B-17 Sally B , Catalina, Vintage Pair & all the other crowd pleasers (not forgetting the Leicester Mercury Pitts Special) all helped to add to the great variety of aircraft on show.
Sadly in the mid 1990's things had changed on the airshow scene in the UK & the expense of organising civilian shows such as Leicester had become to great. John Whittacker had moved on & organised the first of Leicesters first & only rival airshow with the Big Thunder Airshows at Bruntingthorpe & whilst Leicester outlasted the Bruntingthorpe shows (they lasted 3 years, 1993 to 1995). a run of four bad weather years between 1992 to 1996 not helped by the retirement of one of the shows top attractions, Avro Vulcan XH558 it became clear that without a major sponsorship deal the show was just becoming too costly to run & sadly the 1996 event was to be the very last ever Leicester International Air Display. End of an era.

NHPBS members traveled back to the holiday celebrations of the past at Strawbery Banke’s annual Candlelight Stroll on Dec 15 in the Puddle Dock neighborhood of Portsmouth.
They visited the historic houses via the glow of candle lanterns and string lights that illuminate their way and enjoyed seasonal greetings from wandering musicians and performers recreating the traditions of times past.
The stroll began at 6 pm where members met NHPBS representatives and received their special NHPBS Mug filled with hot cider and a tote bag at the crowd favorite Cider Shed. They sipped and enjoyed while you listening to the festive live holiday music!
Commencement is a treasured ceremonial occasion that celebrates students who have graduated from Mount Holyoke College after completing all academic requirements and obligations. Typically, Mount Holyoke holds one annual Commencement in May to honor all graduates.
Commencement will be held outdoors on Pageant Green, the lovely knoll between the Gettell Amphitheater and Lower Lake Road.
Mount Holyoke’s one hundred eighty-eighth Commencement for the class of 2025 was held on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
