13 books that fold out into boats and then paper balloons were the result of a collaborative residency organised by Tim Mosely at Southern Cross University in Lismore, NSW in January 2008. The theme of the work is very political and was inspired by the infamous refugee boat incident in which the John Howard government alleged that refugees attempted to blackmail the Australian Navy into rescuing them and bringing them onshore in Australia by threatening to throw their own children overboard... Thirteen paper balloons were made from handmade paper, pulp-printed with images of the refugee boats and various altered governmental seals and coats of arms - one boat/book/balloon for each of Australia's 13 Immigration Detention Centres. The work was exhibited at Tweed Regional Gallery in February 2009.
