The Soča (pronounced [ˈsoːtʃa] in Slovene) or Isonzo (pronounced [iˈzontso] in Italian) (other names Friulian: Lusinç, archaic German: Sontig, Latin: Aesontius or Isontius[2]) is a 138-kilometre (86 mi) long river that flows through western Slovenia (96 kilometres or 60 miles) and northeastern Italy (43 kilometres or 27 miles).[3]

An Alpine river in character, its source lies in the Trenta Valley in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, at an elevation of 876 metres (2,874 ft).[3] The river runs past the towns of Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Kanal ob Soči, Nova Gorica (where it is crossed by the Solkan Bridge), and Gorizia, entering the Adriatic Sea close to the town of Monfalcone. It has a nival-pluvial regime in its upper course and pluvial-nival in its lower course.[4]

Prior to the First World War the river formed part of the border between Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and during that conflict was the scene of bitter fighting between the two countries, culminating in the Battle of Caporetto in 1917.

Due to its emerald-green water, the river is marketed as "The Emerald Beauty." It is said to be one of the rare rivers in the world that retain such a colour throughout their length.[8] Giuseppe Ungaretti, one of the greatest Italian poets, describes the Isonzo in the poem "The Rivers."

The Soča inspired the poet Simon Gregorčič to write his best-known poem Soči (To the Soča), one of the masterpieces of Slovene poetry. This region served as a location for the 2008 Disney film Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.[9]

The Soča is also well known for its unique trout species Salmo marmoratus (known as the marble trout), which lives in the upper course of the crystal-clear river. This species is endangered due to the introduction of other non-indigenous trout species sometime between World War I and World War II.

From Sweden, I arrived in Nice. My plan was to stay for two or three days, but the heat and crowds were everywhere. I stayed at Hôtel de Suède for one day, right in the lively heart of the city. In the morning, I’ll take a short stroll and then head to Menton for quieter moments.

Tomorrow, I'll share another glimpse of Nice Alpes-Maritimes, France before heading to Menton...

This is the Maison du Roi, located in Brussels' Grand Place. Interestingly, despite its name, no king ever lived there; it served as an administrative office. The current building is a 19th-century reconstruction with neo-Gothic details, housing the Museum of the City of Brussels, where you’ll find the Manneken Pis costume collection. Fun fact: during the Middle Ages, the site was actually a bread market before becoming an administrative center. While its ornate façade amazes visitors today, its simple origins don’t take away from its beauty—they just make it even more intriguing.

This view into the mountains and hills of Connemara fascinated me almost more than the famous Kylmore Abbey. I am standing here at the edge of the Victorian walled gardens. Beyond the fence, pure wilderness begins, crisscrossed by a single road, a few scattered houses and farms. Clouds, mountains, sky, wind and sheep. And nothing else. Isn't that beautiful?

in palma’s calatrava, the summer evening folds the streets into shadows, letting a single ribbon of light slip between the houses, guiding a lone walker through the hushed embrace of ancient stone and the day’s fading warmth.

Built in 1926, under the guidance of architect Adães Bermudes , it is an interesting example of Neo-Manueline Revival architecture , with Islamic suggestions on the main door.

This picturesque view captures the enchanting streets of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a well-preserved medieval town in Bavaria, Germany. Known for its half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets, Rothenburg offers a journey back in time to the Middle Ages. This particular scene highlights the Plönlein, one of the most iconic spots in the town, where the narrow yellow house with a steep roof stands at the fork of two streets, leading to the Siebers Tower and Kobolzeller Tower. With its rich history, this town remains a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to experience the charm of old-world Germany.
