I was looking through some old papers and saw these. It was from some perspective experiments that I was doing in 1993. Instead of the standard perspective (rectilinear projection), I landed on this: what I now know is an equirectangular projection.

 

Go younger me!

 

There weren't digital cameras in those days but there were dot matrix printers!

This equirectangular projection is of Times Square. Times Square is iconic. Most Americans go through it, and many world travelers do as well. It has changed over the years, absorbing trends that began elsewhere, such as the Jumbotron displays that first appeared in Tokyo, but in the final analysis Times Square indicates the pulse of America.

 

Mayor Bloomberg has instituted a number of changes that are significant. He has made Times Square a pedestrian mall, and installed the bleachers for people to watch the action from. The Square has become a spectator sport.
