The Rundetaarn, or Rundetårn (Round Tower in English), is a 17th-century tower located in central Copenhagen, Denmark. One of the many architectural projects of Christian IV, it was built as an astronomical observatory. It is most noted for its equestrian staircase, a 7.5-turn helical corridor leading to the top, and for the expansive views it affords over Copenhagen.
The tower is part of the Trinitatis Complex which also provided the scholars of the time with a university chapel, the Trinitatis Church, and an academic library which was the first purpose-built facilities of the Copenhagen University Library which had been founded in 1482.

It features a stunning equestrian staircase, a 7.5-turn helical corridor leading to the top, from where there are expansive views over the city. If you walk up inside the tower keeping to the inside wall it's only 85m to the top, but if you keep to the outside wall it's 268m.

The Round Tower was the first place visited on my whistle-stop tour of Copenhagen, and the architecture within was something I'd never seen before in the UK - a 7.5 turn slope climbing the tower to high above the skyline of Copenhagen. At the top are a few stairs leading to an observation deck and astronomy tower. A popular venue for people, this shot was taken just before the next ground descended from the top.

I flew to the Faroe Islands via Copenhagen. On my way home I stopped in Copenhagen for 2 nights to explore the city.
This is the Roundhouse which was built by Christian IV in 1642. It was built as an astronomical observatory and it still in use to this day. It has an equestrian staircase which is a 7.5-turn helical corridor leading to the top. The spiral walk is 268,5 meters long at the outer wall and only 85,5 meters long close to the core of the building. This means that you walk around 209 meters to get to top even though the tower is only 36 meters tall.

Inside the Rundetårn (Round Tower) in Copenhagen, which I was climbing to get a nice overview image of the city from on high. This is a 17th-century tower built as an astronomical observatory in central Copenhagen. What you are seeing here is part of an "equestrian staircase" or corridor leading to the top, which has 7 1/2 turns. Frankly, it was a blast to climb. The top affords an awesome 360 degree view of the city!
Built for purposes of astronomy during the time of Christian IV, the Rundetårn is the oldest observation tower in Europe (1642). Instead of traditional stairs, the tower top is reached by ascending an step-less, equestrian staircase.

Pferdetreppe - equestrian staircase or riders' staircase
