This calf is more than a little curious and doesn't hesitate to leave mom's side and come right up to the lens.

Of course, as a guest in their world, it's up to you to give them plenty of space and make sure you don't interfere.

While the rest of the manatee have headed out into the St. John's, or ventured into the Gulf by now, this Cow and Calf have returned to the shelter of the spring run.

I don't really speak manatee squeak, but I figure mom is saying:

"Now that's your sit-on-top tandem kayak up there, you don't really have to worry about those... they make a little splash when those goofy looking things paddle them around."

During manatee season, which lasts from sometime in November until March or April, the sanctuary of Blue Springs is strictly off limits.

This year, according to Save the Manatee, the last sightings in the spring run were around 28 March.

Blue Springs has been open since, but doesn't allow any swimming when manatees are present.

Luckily, the run is open for canoes and kayaks in the mornings, and we had set out to explore the run, from above and below.

We spotted this mom and calf towards the middle of the run first thing in the morning.

I think these turned out pretty good considering how I got them, hanging the camera over the side.

This accomplished freediver has got the technique down pat; first it pokes it's head under to scout out each dive, then it shoots below the surface and goes in to make a grab.

The element of surprise is usually in it's favor.

I've seen a few do their thing nearby, and not seem to mind me, but this particular Cormorant would approach directly and swim right alongside, and then dive right in front of me.

It was still quite a challenge to catch, because it appears and passes by so fast.

With so many gar congregating here, you couldn't swing a dead cat in here, and not bump into one...

If for some reason, you had a dead cat, and needed to prove or disprove the old saying. I'm not sure you can even swing a cat underwater, for what it's worth.

People go up and down the Blue Springs run on a daily basis, right through the main area that these gar tend to congregate.

They tend to stay just out of reach, but as more and more boaters and floaters splash through, these Longnoses get less and less wary of the stealthy, and will hover near and pass right by.

On prior attempts, the water clarity just wasn't cooperative, but I finally got the chance to get a decent look around in fair conditions in September 2017.

A large school of Spadefish circles and weaves through the reef site, and now that the sanctuary has added about 60 more reef units, they've got an even bigger territory to share with the other species that frequent here.

The reef units are spread out over an expanse of several hundred yards, within easy reach from the beach, and the clarity is fair to good when conditions are favorable.

Don't look at me, I didn't come up with the name...

These wrasse are certainly plentiful around the rocks and in the channel, but they dart about and move so quickly, it's a real challenge to get a decent shot.

I don't know what the name refers to, but they sure are hard to catch in a frame.

This might be the last of the Grass Carp that frequents the Gainer Springs group.

While this behemoth doesn't have to worry about predators of any kind, it looks like old age is taking it's toll, and it can barely see, even in crystal clear water

Luckily, I was able to take evasive action, and still fire off a few shots... before it finally recognized me and bolted.

I can't imagine there is a bigger Snapper in residence around the head springs, and this behemoth couldn't have been calmer; while it didn't venture out too far, it didn't seem to mind the light in it's face, didn't stir up the bottom, and stayed perfectly still for several minutes at a time.

The water clarity at this end of the spring run isn't the best to begin with, and on a busy day, it doesn't take long for tubers, waders, and assorted splashers to muck it all up.

Normally, the canopy in this section casts sunbeams down into the water, and there are usually big blotches from the dappled light.

With hundreds of gar all around, not to mention some bruisers, I'm not complaining though...
