The annual fall canoe paddle with Professor of Biological Sciences David White offers students an opportunity to wade through some of the most beautiful swamps and bayous just a short distance from New Orleans in southeastern Louisiana.
The trips start in the late afternoon and last into the evening and night offers a great twilight experience to see firsthand our cypress trees, swamp, marsh plants, and wildlife. Participants see see alligators, wading birds, ducks, and spectacular scenes of Spanish-moss covered trees. With lights after dark participants shine for night-stalking wildlife.
Dr. White studies plant community and population ecology in wetland ecosystems. Recent research has focused on study of the establishment and spread of the marsh reed, Phragmites australis, within the Mississippi River Delta and the community structure of tropical forests in the Yucatan Peninsula. Dr. White is also involved in a long term research project (going on 25 yrs) on marsh plant biomass within the Delta.

Our Environmental Monitor staff was invited to participate in Ohio Sea Grant's 7th annual writers workshop at Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie.
On the second day of the workshop, we were taken out on a Research Cruise. Volunteers from the group, including Environmental Monitor editor Daniel Kelly, got to help with some sampling of Lake Erie's waters.

Students at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) work to understand and manage our world’s natural resources and discover solutions that improve people’s lives and the planet as whole. They monitor the impact of pollution on the Chesapeake Bay, track the migration of rockfish and explore the impact of ocean acidification on marine life. At UMCES, one of the nation’s premier environmental science research and educational institutions, our graduate students pursue M.S. and Ph.D. degrees through an immersive educational experience in partnership with the University System of Maryland.

Visiting Artist Newton Harrison and Anne Whiston Spirn, Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning, explored artistic methods as ways to wed the insights of ecology with city design and planning as a means of adaptation. As part of the course 4.213/11.308 Ecological Urbanism, Harrison and Spirn worked with students on “A New River for Philadelphia,” a project that investigates how to re-create a river that was buried in a sewer in Philadelphia in 1880. Students employed methods developed by Newton and Helen Mayer Harrison to identify a problem and scale of inquiry, devise solutions and design strategies for implementation that “bring forth a new state of mind.” “A New River for Philadelphia” represents an important new advance in 30 years of Spirn’s action research.

"The key to success is keeping company with warm-hearted people who inspire you!" This photo was taken at the world trade organization with one of my dearest friend I met at Geneva, Emily (also a Cal student). On top of learning materials I was truly passionate for, Geneva study abroad program allowed me to meet kind, inspiring people who are also motivated hard workers.

Since high school, I have been involved in UN's Sustainable Development Goals. During the Geneva summer abroad I have visited UN headquarter with clothes I wore when I first attended UN conference 3 years ago.
Indeed, Attending UN conference as a youngest participant, serving as a youth UNEP ambassador, writing native plant books, studying butterflies and doing many research work on wetland and water resource management, and many other involvements were only possible from my true passion for environment.
As I continued my studies on environment and sustainable business practices at UC Berkeley, the number 1 school in the world for environmental studies, I got to involve myself more on sustainable practices overall and eventually was given an opportunity to visit the headquarter of UN.

October 19
Angilee and Jonathan met us for coffee at EESAT this morning! Itâs been many months since I saw these two in a room together, and it was a great way to start the day. We had to cut coffee short for a meeting back at Chilton, where we brainstormed some ideas for a future TV spot with the Cowboys. I think we came up with some goodâns.
Tonight was the final presidential debate. We didnât have anybody over for this one, but I kinda wish we had! It was probably the most entertaining (and terrifying) debate yet. I had to bust out the laptop because I was tweeting so hard. As usual, Trump couldnât help but talk when it wasnât his turn.
WRONG.
I think shirts are already being made with âbad hombresâ and ânasty ladyâ on them. Towards the end of the debate, he was asked if he would accept the results of the election, even if he lost. His response was that he would look at it when it happens, and that âIâll keep you in suspense.â Wowzer. Bruce at EESAT had the right idea. He said, âIâm gonna go in and vote at 8am on Monday, and then Iâm turning off the news.â I feel ya, buddy. I feel ya.
This album shows the experience I have had walking the trail in the mountains of Mexico. Trying to share the most beautiful places my eyes have seen and super important showing the importance of conservation. Nature need us to the battle against climate change! 🌏🌳🌲⛰
