November 14 th is the International Health Awareness Day for Diabetes Mellitus (DM), (SUKKAR / Ad-Daa' As-Sukkary).

Saudi Arabia, along with all the other Arabian Gulf countries ranks in the highest population percentages of cases of DM, and those statistics are rapidly rising.

Type 2 / Gradual Onset DM / Non-Insulin Dependant DM is largely preventable through moderate lifestyle adjustments, proper diet, and regular exercise.

One in three people afflicted with DM , either do not know that they are sick enough and qualify for medication or are in denial that they are diabetics.

Arabian Gulf Countries have a minimal 26.2% affliction rate, that means one in four people have or will develop DM.

DM kills, mostly as heart disease and not by diabetic coma caused by low blood sugar, and dangeroulsy high blood sugar levels are tolerated and ignored. High levels leads to vision loss (non-life threatening), neurapathy (leading to amputations) and kidney failure (possibly fatal).

Learn more about how you can prevent DM and alleviate the symptoms and ensure a healthier lifestyle through preventative measures.

Here's my first submission to the Fun 52 Week Project. A couple of weeks ago, I agreed to start this project with some friends. I thought this would really challenge me to come up with a new creative idea every week and learn how to do self-portraits. Photographing people has always been difficult for me because I don't know the best angles, lighting, etc.

I'm attending San Diego State as a grad student in the Environmental Health division of GSPH (Graduate School of Public Health). I just completed my first week of school. I'm taking 12 units = 4 classes. I'm very excited to be going back to school and working towards my MPH. It's going to be a lot of work but totally worth it in the end. All my classes so far are very interesting!

So things that I learned from my first attempt:

1. It took me at least 1 hour to get this shot.

2. I tried using timer and remote control - timer worked best in this scenario.

3. These textbooks are extremely heavy. The top of my head and neck really felt it after each take. Also, I can't balance books on my head for the life of me.

4. I needed to get creative with the best way to have the amazon smile trademark for my smile. I tried several methods and ended with just sticking a paperclip into the cardboard and holding it with my mouth.

By the way, I love Amazon Student Prime!
