Inkberry holly grows in a rain garden that traps and filters stormwater runoff pollution at Korn Street Park in Kingston, Pa., on Sept. 10, 2024. The 2,500-square-foot rain garden was designed to hold 17,000 gallons of stormwater and was installed in 2020 as the first of 52 pollution reduction projects funded by the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority’s stormwater fee in order to meet federal mandates to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment pollution reaching the Chesapeake Bay. The work was advanced by a 2017 grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) Small Watershed Grants (SWG) and Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction (INSR) programs. Our buildings are a reflection of us. The whims of fashion and the influence of technology weather with time and relent to use, the elements or wear and tear—if we let them. Whether abandoned or painstakingly maintained, the state of the environment we inhabit or leave behind provides a strong indication of what our society values. An influential few made this; we all live here. The fact that a diverse population collectively finds a place to call home shows that where we live is more than who built our buildings.
April 2021: While big environmental projects are good, sometimes a better approach is through education. Changing set living habits and protecting the environment were the goals of a series of environmental and education events dedicated to the All-Ukrainian Environment Day and the Day of Environmental Knowledge.
Residents of eastern Ukrainian towns, including students, activists, representatives of communal enterprises, and officials from local authorities took part in the events.
Activities included conducting a water quality analysis from a local water pumping station, planting trees, and cleaning public areas.
