Entitled 'My favourite places and spaces' the competition was based around 'Reminiscences of Childhood' - Dylan Thomas’ classic recollection of the sights and sounds of his childhood.
Following in the footsteps of Dylan, the competition asked pupils to submit a short story, poem or picture depicting their own favourite places and spaces.
Participating schools were provided with a fascinating insight into the Swansea writer’s story through animated performances of the piece by actor Mark Montinaro and word-based workshops with Dylan Day Coordinator and poet Mab Jones.

An exhibition entitled “PolandIn.” was held on the sidelines of the Assemblies of WIPO Member States, which met from September 24 to October 2, 2018.
It showcased the most important, most modern, and – in many cases – also iconic achievements of Polish technical know-how and design. WIPO co-organized the event with the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.

The education kit entitled “Riskland: the fun way to learn how to prevent disasters” is the outcome of a joint initiative between the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This product was developed at the end of 2002 by the ISDR Regional Unit for Latin America and the Caribbean, in cooperation with UNICEF Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNICEF-TACRO). Initially, it was addressed for countries in the LAC region and was originally produced in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

Iris is a genus of between 200-300 species of flowering plants with showy flowers which takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, referring to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. As well as being the scientific name, Iris is also very widely used as a common name and refers to all Iris species as well as some closely related genera.
The genus is widely distributed throughout the north temperate zone. Their habitats are considerably varied, ranging from cold regions into the grassy slopes, meadowlands, stream banks of Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa, Asia and across North America.
They are perennial herbs, growing from creeping rhizomes (rhizomatous irises), or, in drier climates, from bulbs (bulbous irises). They have long, erect, flowering stems, which may be simple or branched, solid or hollow, and flattened or have a circular cross-section. The rhizomatous species usually have 3-10 basal, sword-shaped leaves growing in dense clumps. The bulbous species have cylindrical basal leaves.
The inflorescences are fan-shaped and contain one or more symmetrical, six-lobed flowers. These grow on a pedicel or lack a footstalk. The three sepals, which are spreading or droop downwards, are referred to as falls. They expand from their narrow base into a broader limb (= expanded portion), often adorned with veining, lines or dots. The three, sometimes reduced, petals stand upright, partly behind the sepal bases. They are called standards. Some smaller iris species have all six lobes pointing straight outwards. The sepals and the petals differ from each other. They are united at their base into a floral tube that lies above the ovary. The styles divide towards the apex into petaloid branches (see pollination, below).
The iris flower is of special interest as an example of the relation between flowering plants and pollinating insects. The shape of the flower and the position of the pollen-receiving and stigmatic surfaces on the outer petals form a landing-stage for a flying insect, which in probing the perianth for nectar, will first come in contact of perianth, three with the stigmatic stamens in one whorl surface which is borne and an ovary formed of three carpels. The shelf-like transverse projection on the inner whorl under side of the stamens, which is beneath the over-arching style arm below the stigma, so that the insect comes in contact with its pollen-covered surface only after passing the stigma, while in backing out of the flower it will come in contact only with the non-receptive lower face of the stigma. Thus, an insect bearing pollen from one flower, will in entering a second, deposit the pollen on the stigma, while in backing out of a flower, the pollen which it bears will not be rubbed off on the stigma of the same flower!

Dicentra spectabilis also known as Venus's car, bleeding heart, Dutchman's trousers, or lyre flower, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern Asia from Siberia south to Japan. This species of bleeding heart can grow to 24"-36" tall and has ternately compound leaves (leaflets that come in threes). The flowers are pendulous, shaped much like hearts, produced in a raceme bearing 3-15 individual flowers, each one 1-2" long, with pink outer petals and white inner petals. The flowering season is from early spring to mid summer. The common name of this plant, bleeding heart, comes from the heart-shaped flowers which have a longer inner petal that extends below the 'heart'.
It is a popular ornamental plant for flower gardens in temperate climates, and is also used in floristry as a cut flower. It can be a full sun plant if in a cool area but in a warm climate, prefers semi-shaded areas. It needs to be kept moist and prefers neutral to alkaline soil with good drainage although these plants can tolerate heavy clay soil as well.
It is prone to aphids, slugs and snails, which cause damage to its leaves. Propagation is by sowing the seeds when fresh. It can also be divided, preferably in the late fall or early spring. However, contact with the plant can cause skin irritation because the entire plant is toxic, so should be handled with gloves and long sleeves.
Several cultivars have been selected, including 'Alba', with pure white flowers, and 'Goldheart', a relatively new cultivar developed at Hadspen Garden in England and introduced in 1997 with fuchsia-coloured flowers that drop from the stem in a row, and yellow foliage that turns lime green by mid summer.

Erected as a prominent Jewish social club in 1887, the building achieved its greatest significance as the home of the People’s Movement Club, a pioneering black social organization led by Oscar DePriest.
Beginning in 1917, Unity Hall was the headquarters of the Peoples Movement Club, a political organization headed by Oscar Stanton De Priest, the primary leader in the drive for fair political representation in Black Metropolis. From the time of his arrival, De Priest was deeply interested in the political structure of the city, and his involvement soon resulted in his election as a Cook County Commissioner in 1904. As the black population grew during the first decade of the century, a movement began to establish representation for the black community in Chicago's municipal government. De Priest formed careful alliances with the white Republican political bosses who controlled the Black Metropolis wards, broadening his political support. Aspirations for black representation in the City Council were realized in 1915, when De Priest defeated three black and five white candidates in the Republican primary for the Second Ward aldermanic post, and with the combined support of the community and the white Republican Party bosses, was the first black to be elected to the City Council. De Priest took an active role in attending to the needs and goals of his constituents, one of his most controversial acts being an ordinance which he proposed to the City Council in 1916 which would have revoked the business license of any establishment that discriminated in providing goods and services on the basis of race. The ordinance met with vigorous opposition and was dropped from further consideration by the City Council.
Upon election, De Priest sought to establish a new political organization supported from within the black community, creating the Peoples Movement Club in 1917. The Peoples Movement Club political organization remained one of the best organized political groups in Black Metropolis. De Priest later became Third Ward Committeeman in 1924, and in 1928 had the distinction of being the first black from the North to be elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving for three consecutive terms.

Every camera owner on this side of the state posts bajillions of photos of beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets every year. Is it cliche? Sure, it's cliche. But now it's my turn – I'm entitled do a little self-indulgence every now and again ;-)

Although entitled Grytviken, Jim Davidson was flown out to the ship in our Lynx Mk3 for an impromptu tour of the ship close to the Falkland Islands. This was because we had been tasked to conduct an exercise at sea while the rest of the garrison enjoyed an SRE show!

Perhaps I should have entitled this photo "Why did the turtle cross the road?"
This is a "Common Snapping Turtle" (Chelydra serpentina), which I happened upon as I made my way from 0800 Mass this morning.
After I made this pic, I picked it (I'm not certain of the sex) up and threw it in the creek running alongside the road. As I turned my Jeep around, I noticed a nearby resident walking out with her camera. She said she also was going to photograph it and ensure it didn't turn into road kill.
The Alligator Snapping Turtle is most easily distinguished from the Common Snapping Turtle by the presence of "horns" or spiny-like protrusions on its shell. As you can see, this one has none.

De Priest formed careful alliances with the white Republican political bosses who controlled the Black Metropolis wards, broadening his political support. Aspirations for black representation in the City Council were realized in 1915, when De Priest defeated three black and five white candidates in the Republican primary for the Second Ward aldermanic post, and with the combined support of the community and the white Republican Party bosses, was the first black to be elected to the City Council. De Priest took an active role in attending to the needs and goals of his constituents, one of his most controversial acts being an ordinance which he proposed to the City Council in 1916 which would have revoked the business license of any establishment that discriminated in providing goods and services on the basis of race. The ordinance met with vigorous opposition and was dropped from further consideration by the City Council.
Upon election, De Priest sought to establish a new political organization supported from within the black community, creating the Peoples Movement Club in 1917. The Peoples Movement Club political organization remained one of the best organized political groups in Black Metropolis. De Priest later became Third Ward Committeeman in 1924, and in 1928 had the distinction of being the first black from the North to be elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving for three consecutive terms.

Entitled the 'Out of Nothing' series, due to myself and my model wanting to do a collaborated project literally out of nothing, or for as free as we could possibly get it.

(International Assn of Mobile Digital Artists' website), the question
was what lead us all to pursue our art...when did you first realize
you were an artist? When I shared my memory, Craig Newsom asked if I
could redraw it...
so here we go! lol
I can remember my first drawing...well, the first one that excited
me. I was sitting in a wood paneled room, age 5, trying to keep my
hand steady as I created this Mighty little figure! It was important
to make sure that the arms weren't too long...cuz then they'd look
like legs...and vice versa. So, first it was the circle (the
head)...and then one long steady line from the base of the head...to
make the body...and, right when I finished the 2nd arm and slowly
moved it upward (to reconnect to the face)...my heart started
pounding...like it couldn't happen fast enough...and I damn near
squealed when they touched. And then I screamed for my mother
"Maaaaaaa!!!!!!!!" with so much excitement that my voice cracked (and
I can hear it in my head the same way I heard it as a child)!
Unforgettable. it was a moment when i achieved my full
vision...seamless execution.
...and it's still sort of like that...when I complete a long drawn out
piece. After so many attempts...When Im striding towards the finish
line...making final touches here and there...my heart starts to
race...I get really excited and quite often, I call my mama to show
her first. lol)
