Entitled 'My favourite places and spaces' the competition was based around 'Reminiscences of Childhood' - Dylan Thomas’ classic recollection of the sights and sounds of his childhood.
Following in the footsteps of Dylan, the competition asked pupils to submit a short story, poem or picture depicting their own favourite places and spaces.
Participating schools were provided with a fascinating insight into the Swansea writer’s story through animated performances of the piece by actor Mark Montinaro and word-based workshops with Dylan Day Coordinator and poet Mab Jones.

Dicentra spectabilis also known as Venus's car, bleeding heart, Dutchman's trousers, or lyre flower, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern Asia from Siberia south to Japan. This species of bleeding heart can grow to 24"-36" tall and has ternately compound leaves (leaflets that come in threes). The flowers are pendulous, shaped much like hearts, produced in a raceme bearing 3-15 individual flowers, each one 1-2" long, with pink outer petals and white inner petals. The flowering season is from early spring to mid summer. The common name of this plant, bleeding heart, comes from the heart-shaped flowers which have a longer inner petal that extends below the 'heart'.
It is a popular ornamental plant for flower gardens in temperate climates, and is also used in floristry as a cut flower. It can be a full sun plant if in a cool area but in a warm climate, prefers semi-shaded areas. It needs to be kept moist and prefers neutral to alkaline soil with good drainage although these plants can tolerate heavy clay soil as well.
It is prone to aphids, slugs and snails, which cause damage to its leaves. Propagation is by sowing the seeds when fresh. It can also be divided, preferably in the late fall or early spring. However, contact with the plant can cause skin irritation because the entire plant is toxic, so should be handled with gloves and long sleeves.
Several cultivars have been selected, including 'Alba', with pure white flowers, and 'Goldheart', a relatively new cultivar developed at Hadspen Garden in England and introduced in 1997 with fuchsia-coloured flowers that drop from the stem in a row, and yellow foliage that turns lime green by mid summer.

Erected as a prominent Jewish social club in 1887, the building achieved its greatest significance as the home of the People’s Movement Club, a pioneering black social organization led by Oscar DePriest.
Beginning in 1917, Unity Hall was the headquarters of the Peoples Movement Club, a political organization headed by Oscar Stanton De Priest, the primary leader in the drive for fair political representation in Black Metropolis. From the time of his arrival, De Priest was deeply interested in the political structure of the city, and his involvement soon resulted in his election as a Cook County Commissioner in 1904. As the black population grew during the first decade of the century, a movement began to establish representation for the black community in Chicago's municipal government. De Priest formed careful alliances with the white Republican political bosses who controlled the Black Metropolis wards, broadening his political support. Aspirations for black representation in the City Council were realized in 1915, when De Priest defeated three black and five white candidates in the Republican primary for the Second Ward aldermanic post, and with the combined support of the community and the white Republican Party bosses, was the first black to be elected to the City Council. De Priest took an active role in attending to the needs and goals of his constituents, one of his most controversial acts being an ordinance which he proposed to the City Council in 1916 which would have revoked the business license of any establishment that discriminated in providing goods and services on the basis of race. The ordinance met with vigorous opposition and was dropped from further consideration by the City Council.
Upon election, De Priest sought to establish a new political organization supported from within the black community, creating the Peoples Movement Club in 1917. The Peoples Movement Club political organization remained one of the best organized political groups in Black Metropolis. De Priest later became Third Ward Committeeman in 1924, and in 1928 had the distinction of being the first black from the North to be elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving for three consecutive terms.

The sculpture is entitled “The Meek shall inherit the Earth, but not the Mineral Rights.” The sculptors are the Chapman Brothers, Jake and Dinos. Prior to their arrival at the College, the sculptures were in the Annenberg Courtyard at the Royal Academy, Burlington House, in Piccadilly.
The College was founded in 1496, and it originally consisted of buildings taken over from the nunnery of St Mary and St Radegund: namely the chapel, and the cloister attached to it; the nuns' refectory, which became the college hall; and the former lodging of the prioress, which became the Master's Lodge. This set of buildings remains the core of the college to this day, and this accounts for its distinctly peaceful and spacious character, which sets it apart from all the other Cambridge colleges.

Entitled Platforms Piece, the statues were created in 1986 by artist Kevin Atherton, who used local residents Peter Lloyd, Joy Battick and Karin Heistermann as models.
New Deal mural entitled "Loading the Packet" painted by Fay E. Davis in 1940.
As of Sept 2020 this mural has been covered as a decision is made about it's possible removal due to it's depiction of black folks.

Every camera owner on this side of the state posts bajillions of photos of beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets every year. Is it cliche? Sure, it's cliche. But now it's my turn – I'm entitled do a little self-indulgence every now and again ;-)
After the family photos were done, it was time to sit and watch the sun sink into Lake Michigan. Pier Cove, near Fennville.

Weigela is a small genus of about 12 species of deciduous shrubs in the family Caprifoliaceae, growing to 1-5 m tall. All are natives of eastern Asia.
The leaves are 5-15 cm long, ovate-oblong with an acuminate tip, and with a serrated margin. The flowers are 2-4 cm long, with a five-lobed white, pink, or red (rarely yellow) corolla, produced in small corymbs of several together in early summer. The fruit is a dry capsule containing numerous small winged seeds.
Weigela species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Brown-tail.
The genus is named after the German scientist Christian Ehrenfried Weigel.
The British Weigela national collection is held at Sheffield Botanical Gardens; along with the national collection of the closely related Diervilla genus.[1] The german Weigela national collection is held at Sichtungsgarten Weigela in Buckow, Maerkische Schweiz [2]
Several of the species are very popular ornamental shrubs in gardens, although species have been mostly superseded by hybrids (crosses between W. florida and other Asiatic species).

The British Embassy Budapest together with Excellence in Journalism Foundation organised a workshop entitled “Current issues concerning media responsibility and freedom” with the participation of two senior British media figures for Hungarian journalists on 31 May.
First, John Lloyd, Director of Journalism of Reuters Institute at the Oxford University and contributing editor to the Financial Times delivered a short presentation on the current situation of the British media market and international tendencies of press publishing.
This was followed by a a presentation about broadcasting issues and the situation of public service media in the UK by David Elstein, Chairman of openDemocracy Foundation.
After the presentations a selected group of senior Hungarian journalists (from prestigeous online and print media outlets) had a chance to ask questions and initiate a dialogue on issues from the Hungarian media sector. The main topics of these discussions were the Hungarian media regulations and the situation of the public service media.
Although entitled Grytviken, Jim Davidson was flown out to the ship in our Lynx Mk3 for an impromptu tour of the ship close to the Falkland Islands. This was because we had been tasked to conduct an exercise at sea while the rest of the garrison enjoyed an SRE show!
The education kit entitled “Riskland: the fun way to learn how to prevent disasters” is the outcome of a joint initiative between the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). This product was developed at the end of 2002 by the ISDR Regional Unit for Latin America and the Caribbean, in cooperation with UNICEF Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNICEF-TACRO). Initially, it was addressed for countries in the LAC region and was originally produced in Spanish, English and Portuguese.

Colour can influence, distract, disturb, overwhelm, highlight, enhance and concentrate how we communicate. We were each given a unique colour swatch to investigate, name and present to the group. I was given a colour which I named "Coruscate Blue" because of its reflective, underwater qualities.

New Deal plaster relief entitled “Sorting the Mail” created by Brenda Putnam in 1936 for the Caldwell NJ post office. It was taken down before 1970 and seemingly "lost". It was discovered about 5-6 years ago in a coal bin in the basement of the post office. It was restored and installed in the lobby of the West Caldwell post office April 28, 2022.

Perhaps I should have entitled this photo "Why did the turtle cross the road?"
This is a "Common Snapping Turtle" (Chelydra serpentina), which I happened upon as I made my way from 0800 Mass this morning.
After I made this pic, I picked it (I'm not certain of the sex) up and threw it in the creek running alongside the road. As I turned my Jeep around, I noticed a nearby resident walking out with her camera. She said she also was going to photograph it and ensure it didn't turn into road kill.
The Alligator Snapping Turtle is most easily distinguished from the Common Snapping Turtle by the presence of "horns" or spiny-like protrusions on its shell. As you can see, this one has none.

feeling between the girl and the dog, a kind of dog.kind of fantasy creature. I ve left some sketch lines, this is one of the study for atmospheres and style.

was what lead us all to pursue our art...when did you first realize
you were an artist? When I shared my memory, Craig Newsom asked if I
could redraw it...
so here we go! lol
I can remember my first drawing...well, the first one that excited
me. I was sitting in a wood paneled room, age 5, trying to keep my
hand steady as I created this Mighty little figure! It was important
to make sure that the arms weren't too long...cuz then they'd look
like legs...and vice versa. So, first it was the circle (the
head)...and then one long steady line from the base of the head...to
make the body...and, right when I finished the 2nd arm and slowly
moved it upward (to reconnect to the face)...my heart started
pounding...like it couldn't happen fast enough...and I damn near
squealed when they touched. And then I screamed for my mother
"Maaaaaaa!!!!!!!!" with so much excitement that my voice cracked (and
I can hear it in my head the same way I heard it as a child)!
Unforgettable. it was a moment when i achieved my full
vision...seamless execution.
...and it's still sort of like that...when I complete a long drawn out
piece. After so many attempts...When Im striding towards the finish
line...making final touches here and there...my heart starts to
race...I get really excited and quite often, I call my mama to show
her first. lol)
Happy Painting! the most fun revisit Ive had in a while. lol

An article entitled "Sea lions at Victoria's Race Rocks injured by debris, boats" just ran in Victoria's Times Colonist that quoted me. See it here: www.timescolonist.com/technology/lions+Victoria+Race+Rock...
Anna Hall, a marine zoologist also quoted in the article suggests showing graphic images to children to warn them of the dangers posed to sea lions. This series is a response to that suggestion and not biased propaganda as I have been accused of.
It is unknown what caused this wound, however the hind flipper is severely mangled.
An exhibition entitled “PolandIn.” was held on the sidelines of the Assemblies of WIPO Member States, which met from September 24 to October 2, 2018.
It showcased the most important, most modern, and – in many cases – also iconic achievements of Polish technical know-how and design. WIPO co-organized the event with the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
