Common and familiar across almost the entire Australian continent. Large gray parrot with pink underparts and a light cap. It tends to be noisy and active and is usually close to a water source. Typically feeds on the ground, where it consumes a range of seeds and grasses. Occurs in a wide range of habitats, including urban areas, parks, and gardens. Occurs in pairs, small groups, or enormous flocks. (eBird)

One of the first birds we saw in Australia, and with us all the way through to Tasmania. This particular bird thought he would show off his beautiful colours and his crest so that we knew he was a Cockatoo and not a Parrot. Of course, he could also be a shady salesman trying to sell me a cheap watch :-)

Eagle-Eye Tours - Eastern Australia.

The sixteenth-century wing overlooks via della Mercanzia, with the façade entirely covered with frescoes by Raimondo Sirotti that follow those made at the beginning of the twentieth century by Ludovico Pogliaghi, who in turn had rebuilt, reinterpreting them, the original ones of the Tavarone.

The painted decoration of the facade reproduces a marble cladding with ashlar on the ground floor and pilasters that divide the façade into three sections. In the center of the façade, above the imposing marble entrance portal, stands the polychrome figure depicting St. George on horseback killing the dragon, a recurring image in numerous portals of the buildings of the historic center: in the Middle Ages the saint was in fact considered the very symbol of Republic. The subject was freely interpreted by Sirotti in 1990, having disappeared all traces of the seventeenth-century original. On the sides, from left to right, six bronze statues are painted inside false niches, depicting some historical figures of the Republic: the annalist Caffaro, the "Prince" Andrea Doria, the doge Simone Boccanegra (according to some the painting would instead depict the founder of the palace, Guglielmo Boccanegra), the crusader leader Guglielmo Embriaco known as "Head of a mallet", the navigator Christopher Columbus and finally the admiral Benedetto Zaccaria.

The decoration is completed by the figures of Janus and Neptune, also in fake bronze, and the coat of arms of the "Conservatori del Mare", the body in charge of governing the port at the time of the Republic of Genoa. The facade culminates with the clock tower.

Peregrine Falcon - Falco Peregrinus

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the peregrine, and historically as the duck hawk in North America, is a widespread bird of prey (raptor) in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head. As is typical of bird-eating raptors, peregrine falcons are sexually dimorphic, with females being considerably larger than males. The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high-speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic TV programme, the highest measured speed of a peregrine falcon is 389 km/h (242 mph).

The peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests; the only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor, and one of the most widely found bird species. In fact, the only land-based bird species found over a larger geographic area is not always naturally occurring, but one widely introduced by humans, the rock pigeon, which in turn now supports many peregrine populations as a prey species. The peregrine is a highly successful example of urban wildlife in much of its range, taking advantage of tall buildings as nest sites and an abundance of prey such as pigeons and ducks. Both the English and scientific names of this species mean "wandering falcon," referring to the migratory habits of many northern populations. Experts recognize 17 to 19 subspecies, which vary in appearance and range; disagreement exists over whether the distinctive Barbary falcon is represented by two subspecies of Falco peregrinus, or is a separate species, F. pelegrinoides. The two species' divergence is relatively recent, during the time of the last ice age, therefore the genetic differential between them (and also the difference in their appearance) is relatively tiny. They are only about 0.6–0.8% genetically differentiated.

While its diet consists almost exclusively of medium-sized birds, the peregrine will occasionally hunt small mammals, small reptiles, or even insects. Reaching sexual maturity at one year, it mates for life and nests in a scrape, normally on cliff edges or, in recent times, on tall human-made structures. The peregrine falcon became an endangered species in many areas because of the widespread use of certain pesticides, especially DDT. Since the ban on DDT from the early 1970s, populations have recovered, supported by large-scale protection of nesting places and releases to the wild.

The peregrine falcon is a well respected falconry bird due to its strong hunting ability, high trainability, versatility, and – in recent years – availability via captive breeding. It is effective on most game bird species, from small to large.

I had been told that parrots were commonly seen in Australia, but my experience in South America led me to believe that there would be the occasional fly-by. No! Common meant groups feeding in gardens, parks, and along the road side. This Galah was the first member of the parrot/cockatoo family that we saw, but it was definitely not the last.

some sad news I have been expecting arrived yesterday ...

my dear Aunt Mal passed after battling cancer for many years ..

she had a good life and lived her entire life in Wales .. . she loved horses and farms .

when she discovered she had cancer she immediately arranged to hike the Pennine Way .. . this National Trail chases along the mountain tops along the rugged backbone of England and offers 268 miles of the finest upland walking in England. A once in a lifetime experience.

her energy and laughter and encouragement will be with me forever .. some special light never dies .. I miss her already ..

Small tern with an entirely black body in breeding plumage with silvery wings. In the winter, their body is whitish-gray and they are not as conspicuous, but note small size, rather dark gray wings and rump, and black "helmet." Breeds in colonies in freshwater marshes and ponds. Builds a floating nest of plant matter. In migration and winter, often found in flocks. Feeds on insects and small fish. (eBird)

Despite being much larger than swallows and mosquitoes, these beautiful terns are also incredibly hard to photograph as they twist and turn in search of food on the wing.

Waldohreule (Asio otus) - (northern) long-eared owl

(northern) Long-eared owl

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long-eared_owl

The long-eared owl (Asio otus), also known as the northern long-eared owl, is a species of owl which breeds in Europe, Asia, and North America. This species is a part of the larger grouping of owls known as typical owls, family Strigidae, which contains most species of owl. The other grouping of owls are the barn owls, family Tytonidae.

The scientific name is from Latin. The genus name Asio is a type of eared owl, and otus also refers to a small eared owl.

Description

The long-eared owl is a medium-sized owl, 31–40 cm (12–16 in) in length with an 86–100 cm (34–39 in) wingspan and a body mass of 178–435 g (6.3–15.3 oz).[3][4] It has erect blackish ear-tufts, which are positioned in the centre of the head. The ear-tufts are used to make the owl appear larger to other owls while perched. The female is larger in size and darker in colouration than the male. The long-eared owl's brownish feathers are vertically streaked. Tarsus and toes are entirely feathered. Eye disks are also characteristic in this species. However, the eye disks of A. otus are darker in colour or rusty-orange. This nocturnal species is perhaps most easily seen perched in a tree in its daytime roost, sometimes in small groups during the winter months. There are about six thousand long eared owls in the United States, and fifty thousand in the whole world.

Yellow-headed blackbirds are not entirely uncommon west of the Cascades but they usually stay well clear of people. For whatever reason, on this day in late April, I was able to get close. A nice treat! Apparently this was an aberration as on several days since they stay at least 50 yards away.

Egyptian Goose - Alopochen Aegyptiacus

Once common along the entire Nile valley and regarded as sacred in ancient times, the Egyptian Goose is no longer an easy bird to see in the country from which it takes its name, as it is largely confined to upper Egypt. It is, however, widespread and common throughout sub-Saharan Africa, with introduced populations firmly established in England, Holland, Belgium and France. Concerns over conflict with native species has led to restrictions on keeping them in Britain and Europe.

This distinctive small goose is a member of the shelduck family. In the wild it is invariably found in pairs or family parties, while flocks of 50 or more can be found after the breeding season. The sexes are similar: both have a conspicuous chestnut patch encircling the eyes, giving them a somewhat piratical appearance, while the brilliant white forewing is obvious when they fly.

The UK Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 came into force on Sunday 1st December. The Order implements requirements contained in EU Regulation 1143/2014 on Invasive Alien Species, which sets out rules to prevent and minimise the impact of the introduction and spread of non-native animals and plants across the EU. The Order makes it an offence, amongst other things, to import, keep, sell, transport, breed or release into the environment, any of the listed plants and animals. Invasive alien waterfowl currently covered by this Order are Egyptian Geese and Ruddy Ducks Oxyura jamaicensis.

A plain brown bird with an effervescent voice, the House Wren is a common backyard bird over nearly the entire Western Hemisphere. Listen for its rush-and-jumble song in summer and you’ll find this species zipping through shrubs and low tree branches, snatching at insects. House Wrens will gladly use nestboxes, or you may find their twig-filled nests in old cans, boots, or boxes lying around in your garage.

31-december-2021: during this shot, with the city lights switched on, the darkness was almost complete, but once again the residual brightness of the late twilight manages to illuminate the image sufficiently.

You can see, under the fog, some patches of light that come from the City.

In the stillness the air stratifies and the denser, colder and humid one goes downwards to stagnate and to condense on the Gulf of Venice, that of Trieste, the coasts and the surrounding plains.

18-march-2022: the perpetual alternation between low and high tide, more marked precisely in this area where the tidal masses are channeled along the entire narrow Adriatic Sea, has greater variation in conjunction with the days around the full moon and the new moon.

It is therefore an astronomical phenomenon, but that Weather Patterns can alter, even massively.

In "my area", for most of the winter and with a peak in March, there were numerous extreme low tides and minimal high tides, this due to the over 1040hpas of adiabatic pressure and the continuous currents prevailing from the East or North-East.

So, every +1hpas over the terrestrial average pressure (gravity) value of 1013hpas corresponds to 1cm less in the level of that sea placed under the adiabatic pressure of the anticyclone and obviously vice versa in case of decreasing pressure.

The north-eastern currents tend to move the water masses towards the West and then towards the South following the anti-clockwise current that goes up the Adriatic along the Dalmatian coast and descends it from the Italian side.

All these factors "empty" the Gulf of Trieste which is also the Northernmost Spot of the entire Mediterranean Sea!

The exact opposite occurs with Low Pressure and the activation of persistent "long currents" from the South or South/East, in which cases not only Venice ends up under the surface of the Northern Adriatic Sea.

Well, it's not entirely true. Yesterday when I made dinner there was salmon for both of us. Only today, yes, I still had a portion all to myself ;-) But yesterday I thought of this song from our youth again – and found it perfect for today's topic. So quick – cut a mini slice and put it in the freezer ... With a toothpick you usually quickly pick the best pieces from the buffet. Yesterday we didn't eat with a toothpick but with a knife and fork ... Bon appetit!

Guten Appetit!

Gray Catbirds are entirely slate gray, with a large dark eye, black cap, and a Brick-red undertail not often seen. These birds are relatives of

mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song. If you’re convinced you’ll never be able to learn bird calls, start with the Gray Catbird. Once you’ve heard its catty mew you won’t forget it!!! I was lucky to get a shot with its Brick-red undertail showing. photographed on Hilton Head Island, SC, USA

Getting airborne from runway 28L at London Heathrow, autumn 1977.

9G-ABO was delivered new to Ghana Airways in January 1965 and spent its entire career with the airline, before being retired in December 1980.

Scan of a slide (possibly Agfachome) from my collection; the purple tinge is typical of that brand! Image not taken by me.

With 4 inches of fresh snow greeting me this morning, I actually went out early to shoot a few photos but it all looked too familiar to me...scenes I've shot many times before...so I returned to a more colorful autumn day on the lake. Plenty of snow pics ahead.

It was a particularly good year for these berries, soon to vanish as the birds seem to relish them. The birds are particularly active today with the woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees at the feeders, and a large group of juncos pecking in the snow beneath. The flock of robins which makes its appearance annually about this time of the first snows is busy eating the rowan berries out front. It's always a pleasant surprise to see them now, gorging on these and other berries, before they make the trip south. Interestingly, the entire band is always composed of males, their red breasts prominent. I assume it's because the females have already departed.

The green (what we usually expect if someone says, "look at that moss,") is the gametophyte phase of this moss. The plants make eggs, and sperm, that fertilizes the egg. Then, if all goes well, a non-green structure, the sporophyte, grows from the fertilized egg. Each sporophyte has a capsule on its end, and spores are grown there, then released, and washed or blown to another occasion.

This entire assembly was (and most likely still is) growing on a downed tree trunk.

Isn't God a great artist? Thank you for looking.

I spent an entire day at Horseshoe Bend to photograph the sunrise and sunset. This location has gone from obscurity in the 1970s to a crowded tourist destination today, complete with tour vans and busses hauling in travelers who want to stand on the edge and make self-portraits. They literally line up in a cue on the cliff's edge while the tour guide instructs them through a series of poses.

In the offseason, Horseshoe Bend isn't very crowded which made it a nice experience. The wind picked up in the afternoon to the point that sand was being blown up the canyon walls, and was strong enough to knock over tripods. I put my knit cap over the camera to keep the sand out of it, but it was hard to keep the sand out of my eyes except to face the other direction. I considered leaving, but it looked like the sun would be able to peak under the clouds and light them up. Well, that's just what happened, so it was a good decision to see it through. Visitors that evening were treated to a gorgeous fiery sunset.

This is a 2 frame vertorama (vertical panorama) shot with 3 frame bracketed exposures to capture all the light. So 6 frames in total to make the photograph. This is a wonderful location, easily accessible, and even wheelchair accessible. Just don't roll the wheelchair up to the edge.

Island Of Madagascar

Off The East Coast Of Africa

Palmarium Reserve

Night shot of a woolly lemur. This is the only time I saw this type of lemur on my entire Madagascar trip.

The woolly lemurs, also known as avahis or woolly indris, are nine species of strepsirrhine primates in the genus Avahi. Like all other lemurs, they live only on the island of Madagascar.

With a body size of up to 20 inches long and a weight of up to 42 ounces, the woolly lemurs are the smallest indriids. Their fur is short and woolly. The body can be grey brown to reddish, with white on the back of the thighs, with a long, orange tail. The head is round with a short muzzle and ears hidden in the fur.

Woolly lemurs can be found in both humid and dry forests, spending most of their time in the leafy copse. Like many leafeaters, they need long naps to digest their food. Woolly lemurs live together in groups of two to five animals, which often consist of parents and several generations of their offspring. Males and females live in pairs.

Like all indriids, the woolly lemurs are strictly herbivorous, eating predominantly leaves, but also buds and, rarely, flowers. Overall life expectancy is not known. – Wikipedia
