A Note About High ISO:
I typically use auto ISO when photographing birds in flight because lighting conditions can change dramatically during a sequence. In this instance, the ISO was 3200 in good light but jumped to 12800 as the bird passed through shadows cast by vegetation along the bank. For those who dislike high ISO due to noise concerns, it’s crucial to understand that noise is more often caused by underexposed frames than by high ISO settings alone. Noise is exacerbated by underexposure and improper exposure balance, especially in low-light conditions. Using a higher ISO to properly expose the image is better than underexposing, as proper exposure ensures a stronger signal-to-noise ratio and minimizes visible noise, even at higher ISOs. While a lower ISO is always preferable, capturing the shot is what truly matters in photography. To enhance the image, I used Topaz AI, which effectively reduced noise and improved the overall quality.

Tyntesfield (TINTS-feeld) is a Victorian Gothic Revival country house and estate near Wraxall, North Somerset, England. The house is a Grade I listed building named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The location was formerly that of a 16th-century hunting lodge, which was used as a farmhouse until the early 19th century. In the 1830s a Georgian mansion was built on the site, which was bought by English businessman William Gibbs, whose huge fortune came from guano used as fertilizer. In the 1860s Gibbs had the house significantly expanded and remodelled; a chapel was added in the 1870s. The Gibbs family owned the house until the death of Richard Gibbs in 2001.
Tyntesfield was purchased by the National Trust in June 2002, after a fundraising campaign to prevent it being sold to private interests and ensure it would be open to the public. The house was opened to visitors for the first time just 10 weeks after the acquisition, and as more rooms are restored they are added to the tour.

Another view over the Heron Pond in Bushy Park under a lovely blue sky with just a hint of an odd cloud .
Bushy Park’s landscape is a patchwork quilt of English history spanning a millennium: you can see the remains of medieval farming systems, the legacy of a Tudor deer park, 17th century water gardens and decorative features representing the height of neoclassical taste, and traces of military camps that played remarkable roles in the World Wars.
This great expanse of low-lying land became a royal park in 1529 when it was given to King Henry VIII by his close adviser Cardinal Wolsey, along with Wolsey’s home – Hampton Court Palace. One of the park’s defining features is the Longford River, a twelve-mile canal created entirely by hand in the 1630s to ensure a steady water supply to Hampton Court. The river now looks like an organic part of the landscape and supports a wide variety of plants and animals. But it also enabled several stunning water features to be built, which give Bushy its distinctive character.
Look out for the spectacular Diana Fountain, a centrepiece of the mile-long Chestnut Avenue designed by Sir Christopher Wren, one of the world’s most celebrated architects. Visit the newly-restored Upper Lodge Water Gardens, a historic gem hidden away in the north of the park. See if you can spot some of the arresting birdlife, from kingfishers to kestrels. And enjoy a walk in the peaceful Woodland Gardens after fuelling up at the Pheasantry Café.
Loblolly Pines by The Little Branch is our new release for Uber.
One of the fastest growing southern pines, this tree is used as a quick-screen in many landscapes. This North American native has dark green needles and narrow, red-brown, often-paired cones that are three to six inches long. It has a long history with the pioneers and is known by several other names, among them rosemary pine, old field pine, and bull pine. Loblolly pines provide shelter and food for many southeastern animals and the seeds are also consumed by chipmunks, squirrels and other small rodents.

Here's a companion piece to the previous running Coyote; again, no contact with the ground. In this case, however, it was my camera's mirror flipping up that made her jump. Odd, because I took more than 200 shots of her as she dug a calorie bonanza of frozen fish out of a shallow pond, and she seemed well aware and accepting of me. Still, this is a wild animal. Her senses are razor-sharp. I bet the shutter mechanism was loud to her in the stillness of a cold winter day.
I was NOT in my car when I had this encounter, having tracked this Coyote quite far from the road - and at times had the tables turned and found her tracking me. This shot came toward the end; the sun was sinking low in the west. I was sitting. Camera was on a tripod, the only option when using a big heavy lens for an extended time, and still the best way to ensure optimum sharpness in most situations with a long lens.

My first post in over 3 years on Flickr. This one is from Lake Bled in Slovenia, and was taken in October last year during a photography workshop. We visited Lake Bled on our first full day in Slovenia, and got up well before sunrise to ensure we got to a decent viewpoint before all the other photographers did. After setting up on the boardwalks at the waters edge, we waited for the sun to rise. Sunrise did not disappoint and we couldn't have asked for a better start to the workshop.
Taken in the same session as my in flight male. Thanks so much everyone for your kind comments on that one. This female is ovipositing her eggs in the pond to ensure the next generation continues, just like dragonflies have done for around 300 million years....
PS Excuse the lack of commenting but we have the grandkids here this weekend. I hope to be back to normal service soon!
The Andean Emerald (Uranomitra franciae), photographed at La Minga Ecolodge in Valle del Cauca, Colombia, presented a rewarding challenge in both timing and composition. This hummingbird’s iridescent green plumage, accented with golden tones and a sapphire crown, came alive against a softly blurred background of forest hues. The natural light provided just enough illumination to capture the shifting metallic colors without overexposing the white chest, requiring careful control of exposure and angle. The bird’s poised stance on a slender branch offered a moment of stillness in the midst of its normally restless activity.
From a photographer’s perspective, this image is a study in balancing technical precision with patience. Working with a long lens to isolate the subject, I aimed to create a composition that emphasized the vibrancy of the feathers while keeping the background minimal and complementary. Depth of field was critical in ensuring sharpness on the eye and crown while maintaining a pleasing bokeh. Moments like these remind me of the intersection between artistry and documentation, where a frame becomes both a portrait and a testament to the species’ place in its Andean environment.

The city of The Hague owes its origins to the Binnenhof, which over the centuries ensured an increase in administrators and workers who settled in the vicinity.
For a long time the entire grounds of the Binnenhof and the Buitenhof were walled.
There were gates to go from the Binnenhof to the outer courts and from there enter the outside world.

Trojan Chess?
#MacroMondays
#GamePieces
Royalty, politics, sports, power (stay in or get it), be the winner. People plot intrigues or cheat to achieve their goals and get what they want. Not only people, because science has found numerous examples of tricking or play-acting in the animal world, especially among birds and primates. So it's a universal behaviour pattern.
So how about this little intrigue/cheat: pawnish, lowly "Man, Don't Get Angry" (MDGA) game pieces, entering the royal playing field of the noblest games of all, ready to silently take over the place of the true king, queen, and their acolytes. Man, will they be angry once they realise what just happened. Will they? I'd say, "Power to the People" and game on ;) It's the season of the Pawns. Maybe this is also just another variant of suicide chess (in German, it's Räuberschach, "robbers' chess"), the only chess I ever played successfully.
I was ready to skip. I'm not a huge fan of board games, although I always quite enjoyed Scrabble, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit. And of course, we played "Mensch ärgere Dich nicht" (MDGA, which was inspired by Ludo and Pachisi) and a game called Malefiz (another descendant of Pachisi) when I was little. "I don't like board games" also means that there are none at home. Other than the very basic compendium of games I bought (you guessed it) for our last "game pieces" theme. It comes with three puzzle-like cardboard game board pieces (one sticks them together like puzzle pieces to get the whole game board – a simplistic game in itself, if you like). One side has a chess board print (used as background), the other the classic MDGA design, and game pieces for the latter and also for checkers. And chess pieces? There are none, which is a bit of a bummer.
None of the components is special in any way, which made me think of either skipping or buying a board game with interesting game pieces (a stupid idea). But then I remembered my old, truly vintage travel/pocket chess. It's a "De La Rue & Cos. Improved Pocket Chess Board With Chess Men Complete". It's foldable like a book, made of very sturdy cardboard, and the game board part has slots under each square where you can put in the cardboard "chess men" for each move. I thought I'd hide the wooden game pieces behind the cardboard chess pieces of the vintage pocket chess: "Trojan horse style". Theme participation ensured, money saved :)
Size info: The wooden MDGA pieces are 2,5 cm/0,98 inches tall, and the entire scene has a width of 6,5 cm/2,55 inches.

Adelaida, AUSTRÀLIA 2023
The General Post Office is a colonial-era building situated on 141 King William Street on the north-west corner of King William Street and Victoria Square. It is the former General Post Office for South Australia. Postal services operated from the building between 6 May 1872 and 11 October 2019.
A 14-story hotel was built behind the historic structure, starting in 2021. It opened as the Adelaide Marriott Hotel in 2024.
History
General Post Office
The original building was constructed in the period 1867–1872, and was the most expensive building constructed to that time by the colonial government in South Australia. It was constructed from Glen Osmond and Glen Ewin stone, and ornamented with Bath limestone.
A competition was held in March 1866 for the design of the building, with the winning design submitted by Edmund Wright in collaboration with Edward Hamilton. They were at the time in practice with Edward John Woods, and Robert G. Thomas may have had a hand in the design.
Prince Alfred, The Duke of Edinburgh, was involved in laying the foundation stone, who also officially named the clock tower Victoria Tower on 1 November 1867. The capstone was put in place at a ceremony on 25 May 1870. The height of the tower was put at 154 feet (46.9 m), a little taller than the Albert Tower of the Town Hall on the other side of King William Street. The original plans had the tower somewhat taller, but R. G. Thomas was obliged to redesign it, as a cost-saving measure.
The building was extended in 1891-92.
There was also an office tower addition to the original post office in the 1920s.
Hotel
On 14 October 2019, Adelaide's GPO was relocated to the adjacent GPO Exchange tower at 10 Franklin Street. Plans were announced for the original building to have with a Westin hotel built atop it.
In April 2021, South Australian premier Steven Marshall attended a sod-turning ceremony, to mark the beginning of construction on the hotel. The hotel was estimated to cost A$200, with property developer Greaton handling the construction. Designed by local architects Baukultur, the tower, on the site of the 1920s addition, will retain the entire original GPO building, with some sections incorporated into the new hotel. Upgrades to the structure as well as additional seismic retrofit have been added, to ensure the structural integrity of both the old and new buildings. The topping out ceremony took place in October 2023, and included an Aboriginal smoking ceremony by traditional owner representatives Kuma Kaaru.
The 285-room, 14-story hotel opened as the Adelaide Marriott Hotel on 22 August 2024.

Ulu Mosque is the largest mosque in the Netherlands.
Construction began in 2009 and the building was finished in 2015.
The mosque's exterior was designed by Dutch architect Ishak Önen.
Red bricks were a deliberate choice to ensure the building complements the Dutch architectural style and harmonizes with its surroundings.
The interior was designed by Semih Irteş, an Istanbul-based architect and artist known for his traditional style.
This ground floor is for men, 2 upper floors are for women. The building is suitable for 1600 visitors.

The story of Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage, is one of unparalleled heroism, a brilliant mind, and an even greater heart. A genius on the battlefield, Minato was both feared and admired for his incredible speed and tactical brilliance. Yet, it was his final, selfless act—sacrificing his life to seal the monstrous Nine-Tails Fox within his own child, Naruto—that truly defined his legacy. In that moment, Minato ensured the survival of the village he loved, leaving behind a legacy marked by love, loss, and the hope for a brighter future.

Last year, I had the privilege of visiting APCA, an NGO in Canelones, Uruguay, dedicated to cats and farm animals. APCA provides a sanctuary for feral, endangered, and abused cats, as well as farm animals rescued from mistreatment.
Some of the animals have endured cruelty, accidents, paralysis, cancer, and abandonment. When feasible, they are placed for responsible adoption.
The mission is to ensure they live a serene and comfortable life in a large, natural outdoor environment, with appropriate shelters and boundaries to keep them safe.
Wikipedia: Ancient Siam (also known as Ancient City, Thai: เมืองโบราณ, Mueang Boran) is a museum park constructed by Lek Viriyaphant and occupying over 200 acres (0.81 km2) in the shape of Thailand.
Ancient Siam is dubbed as the world's largest outdoor museum. Close to the Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan Province, the 320-hectare "city" features 116 structures of Thailand's famous monuments and architectural attractions. The grounds of Ancient Siam correspond roughly to the shape of the kingdom, with the monuments lying at their correct places geographically. Some of the buildings are life-size replicas of existing or former sites, while others are scaled down. Still others are "creative designs," and not replicas of any historical structure.
The replicas were constructed with the assistance of experts from the National Museum to ensure historical accuracy. (Photographers note: This temple is an inspiration of the shape of Phra Thinang Wihan Somdej which was destroyed in Ayutthaya in 1767 and not an exact replica.)

Notice the COVID QR check in on the door. As Queensland tourist spots open up over the next two months, people in towns like this will need to ensure they are ready for an influx of lockdown weary southerners, some bearing gifts we do not want. Being vaccinated, continuing to check in and also wearing masks where social, distancing is not possible will be very important.
For thrill-seekers, the park offers exhilarating bungee jumping experiences, ensuring an adrenaline rush amidst stunning natural surroundings. Continuing with "Pano-Portraiture" - using the panoramic sabotage technique in the service of portraiture. ( Dis-service ? )
The thing that seems to be distinguishing pano-sabotage artists on Flickr from the many, many people who are posting to hosts of other online iPhoneography groups is that here, we Flickr folk are working hard to ensure that this technique is yet another tool for making art and is not a end unto itself.
When you search around online you see a lot of panoramic distortion images being posted but most of them just come across as novelty pics. "Hey, isn't this weird?" kind of thing.
So my hat is off to all who've worked with the technique here on Flickr and posted work that is truly artistic and unquestionably creative. Cheers to you all !!!!!
The original image is much larger. This portrait was isolated out of that bigger picture in order to zero in on a portrait opportunity.

With the waters of life around your roots

That will fall before my eyes
To grow wildly between the thighs
Of sweet nature, her branches spread
Open wide, ensuring i am fed
With forbidden beauty, that flows and slips
Before my eyes and over my lips

The first thing that strikes the visitor who enters the St. Bénigne Cathedral is the color difference between the nave and chancel. Sources say, the Middle Ages, the stone of the choir was ocher. Also, during the last restoration (1988-1995), did it tried to restore that color.
The choir is characterized by large columns that rise up to the vault without interruption, ensuring effective slenderness to the fairly successful sky. The chorus, like the nave elevation has three levels: low windows, triforium and high windows. The clerestory is everywhere framed top and bottom by a thin headband strong projection that cuts slenderness elevations. The columns of the sanctuary - a single holding - and lift effect does emerge that more strongly.
In the choir there is a wide siding between the triforium and high windows is a feature of Saint-Bénigne.
St. Bénigne Cathedral is flooded with light because the glass roof of the high windows is white glass.

A setting looking to the east while taking in views of Yosemite Valley. My thinking in composing this image was to capture a layered look, or more appropriately one of a look beyond. Nearby would be the forest of trees at the edge of a grassy meadow I was standing in. Beyond would be peaks and ridges of the Cathedral Rocks. Because of the haze and smoke present in the skies above from nearby wildfires, I decided to close in on the focal length to ensure that I minimized those skies while focusing on the trees and mountains.

One from 'Super Saturday' at the S curve south of Port A. This shot was always going to be a bit of a gamble, but very fortunately (for me) some old dude was out for his leisurely Saturday morning cruise and found himself caught up in the middle of a 15-20 car wacky races chase, at the same time ensuring he held them all far enough back in the photo not to bother me! Note, I have removed the annoying yellow Do Not Pass sign from alongside the road. I'll let BP describe his chase departure from this location with the aforementioned old dude...!

Growing up along the Kenosha Sub, I was no stranger to seeing ATS pilots leading the foreign coal trains; but they had unfortunately disappeared when PTC was activated, and that was before I knew what I was doing as a photographer. While this is the Milwaukee Sub (a line that never had ATS), and a manifest, rather than an Oak Creek coal (or a Harvard grain, which I also never got), it was still nice to catch this as a throwback to my childhood.
I only wish I could go back and shoot more of the coal trains.
For the past few years, a herd of about 1,000 goats has been turned loose on the Corte Madera Marsh to eat up all the weeds and everything else in sight, and to thin out the cover used by transients for sleeping and other activities, some of which have set the marsh on fire. Here they're munching away behind an electrified fence, which the goatherd keeps moving to different locations to ensure the goats don't run out of edibles.

During on of these hikes we found a small rocky cliff face with a Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus) nest and we could see it from a good distance from above. We spent a short period of time to get a photo then departed the nest site.
There was an ample supply of prey to ensure they grew and were able to migrate south in the fall.

... ensure everything in your frame is acceptably sharp?
Do you focus to infinity? Do you focus on the bottom third of the frame? Or do you have a cheat-sheet with a list of hyperfocal distances based on the effective focal length and aperture?

This was the absolute highlights of our trip to Texas for me! When we visited in 2017, we spent a good amount of time looking for these Aplomado Falcons and found them a couple of times but no great photos to be had on that trip. Still such a major thrill to finally see them that year. This year's encounter has made up for every trip and every mile we searched in vain looking for them in the five previous years!!
We found them in nearly the exact location as in 2017. It was overcast and windy as hell but they were hunkered down and we used the car as a blind. So amazing. I still remember every detail.
I am so behind in my Texas photos but today is the perfect day for posting these beautiful little falcons. There is reason to celebrate even more in that this week (June 5, 2019), the 500th Aplomado Falcon nestling was banded in South Texas since 1995!!! This is such fantastic news as a mere 24 years ago, this falcon was extirpated (extinct from part of its original range) in the US from loss of habitat and likely climate change.
The Peregrine Fund started releasing captive-bred juveniles. Artificial nesting platforms were innovated to keep Great Horned Owls from preying on the Aplomado nestlings, habitat was managed to provide better natural nesting sites, and partnerships were formed with state agencies and landowners to ensure success. I would definitely call this a HUGE SUCCESS!!! This article made me so very happy.
