Norfolk Hawker - Anaciaeschna isoceles (F)

Habitat

The optimum conditions for breeding appear to be unspoilt grazing marsh dyke systems with clean, non-saline water, rushy margins, preferably with an abundance of water soldier as well as other aquatic plants.

Threats

Conversion of grazing marsh to arable farming.

Inappropriate ditch management.

Nutrients enrichment.

Pollution.

The impact of global climate change and fluctuations in water levels.

Status & Distribution

The Norfolk Hawker is currently restricted to the fens and grazing marshes that are relatively isolated from polluted water in the Broadlands of Norfolk and Northeast Suffolk. A Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) for the Norfolk Hawker has been drafted for Norfolk.

Similar Species

Blue-brown eyes.

Blue and yellow markings.

Management

Norfolk Hawker Management Profile

General management principles include maintaining grazing marshes, controlling saline intrusion, controlling nutrient enrichment. There are also best practice guidelines for managing inhabited sites, particularly the dyke vegetation and the surrounding terrestrial habitats.

Case Study

Work is underway to restore habitats for this species in Norfolk.

A true open-air museum, Rome has preserved and enriched its beauty over the centuries. Each corner of the streets reveals a treasure, be it ancient, religious, architectural or even gastronomic. All roads lead to Rome, and one should not resist, simply take it and go, enjoy the beauty and admire the eternal city.

This is a re-edit of a photo posted earlier on Flickr. A young Maasai warrior gets enthusiastic during a welcoming dance. Linda and I visited a "cultural" Maasai boma (village enclosure) while we were traveling back to Karatu from the Serengeti. It was a real village -- people live there as they try to keep the old ways, but open it to outsiders as a way to earn income to keep things going. These Maasai are traditional herders (and cultural interpreters) who live on the arid leeward side of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. They ask a donation, allow visitors to meet and photographic them, and they sell the excellent beaded crafts they have made. Some also work "in the outside" as guides or as workers at Serengeti and Ngorongoro lodges, Many see these show-villages as exploitation. I, and many others, see this as a friendly exchange that allowed Linda and me a very tiny window into the Maasai way of life. We came, we met, we learned, we left enriched though perhaps wanting more, and hopefully their life goes on. Technical Note: This is what an extreme wide angle is for. I was in these guys' faces and they got in mine; we fed off of each other. ©2019 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com

Beauty surrounds us daily. Take a walk around your property or your neighborhood and look at the beauty. It’s everywhere. Sometimes it’s very small, sometimes it’s very colorful. If you appreciate it, it’s always there enriching your day and your visual pallet. It’s truly a gift to your eyes and your soul. Thanks for viewing my work. Gratitude and Kindness light your day when you you need it most.

"Trees enrich our lives throughout the year. They reassure us with the rustle of their leaves, give us shade to soothe our overheated bodies and they bring delight to us when we watch birds nest in their boughs. However, it is only during the fall that they wave flamboyant foliage that seems to demand our attention." ~ Author Unknown

Another from this past fall...it was a foggy Saturday morning; one of those days when most people choose to stay inside, but not me, had to grab the camera and head out for some atmospheric shots....glad I did...feel free to hit the letter "L" on your keyboard for a better look :-)

Have a great Wednesday...thanks for all your visits!!!!!

many of you have touched my heart, and all of you have enriched each day, sharing your photos and bits of you...

Happy Thanksgiving to my US friends, but thank each of you for sharing what you see in such beautiful ways...

Why is it that us humans shy away from water this colour when plants and trees love this clay soil-enriched water?

The first destination for the coal from the Shakhtinsk collierys. This is also the first installation you will come across when searching out the industrial railways of Shakhtinsk. It cannot be missed, the main road to Shakhtinsk crosses over these yards here creating a fine vantage point. There is no footway though and the drivers on this busy road are less than patient. We waited in the side wings before moving in to take this and any other photos here, given our previous problems encountered on this day. The guardhouse is just over to our left. Even though you are on a public right of way you do not know who will object, and they are often not the obvious people.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” is “insects and co”.

I must confess that I am not a big fan of insects as a general rule. Dragonflies and bees make up the exception to the rule. Dragonflies are just so beautiful, especially their wings; and bees are so fluffy and furry.

This happy bee in the middle of a velvety dahlia I photographed one day after work when I went to Canterbury to do some shopping.

This year throughout summer and autumn I have been delighted to see so many bees pollinating the flowers around Melbourne. There has been a big drive in Melbourne to establish hives for bees on city rooftops and in people's gardens. I hope this is the reason why I have seen so many this year. We need them so badly to enrich our world and brighten our lives!

A Winter Memory

Fresh-fallen snow, untouched by man, tops bushes fence and tree;

The strong, gusty wind, whirling it 'round, improves and enriches its beauty.

It sauntered down in the silence of night, leaving a scenic delight;

Now, in the sun, it dances and winks as we drink in the wondrous sight.

This is a picture-post-card scene - winter at its best;

It leaves a mark etched in our heart of when winter was our guest.

One of my photos included with an article in a new Brampton magazine called Enrich

You see me here after a day of enrichment activities (legit and otherwise) that have me troubled. Let me explain:

Afternoon sun enriches the mudstone buttresses to the right, which form the pedestal of the uniquely striking Fisher Towers formation east of Moab, Utah. I used a polarizing filter to bring out the colors of the stone. In the distance toward the left is Professor Valley and the Colorado River. Further back out of sight along this line is Arches National Park.

This outing was a treat because it was our family Boxing Day hike, with my mother and her husband, my two sons, my dearest wife, and my two excellent brothers.

More backlit foliage on the banks of the Flambeau river.

I watched the zookeeper throw mealworms into the air. The blue-faced honeyeaters would swoop down and catch the mealworms mid-air.

Their accuracy wasn't 100%, but pretty close!

Goats love almost any kind of enrichment.

I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen, with my eyes!

These hot pink late tulips are my absolute favourites, they have pointed petals which makes them look like stars... and that is it, they have star-quality!!!

They are begging to be photographed, and make it easy, their beauty so prominent, yes, we had fun together!

For years I 'experimented' in the studio, to get that Flemish painter's light? Well, I was born in Flanders, it must be in my blood? LOL.

WHAT PART of DO NOT USE is it that you DO NOT UNDERSTAND?

I find my images on numerous blogs and websites EVERY DAY, without my permission!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why not view the set as a slide-show?

Also I often upload more than one image at the same time, I see a tendency to only view the last uploaded...

Violet, the muntjac deer, has recently given birth to her second child. While I was unable to see the fawn, Mom did come out to check for some food. Unfortunately, the lettuce was gone from the clips on the enrichment piece, so Violet had to settle on food from a bowl.

The wallabies won't be ordering from that restaurant again.

On the morning of July 10, the animal care team released 14 live bass into the polar bear's main pool and a bear party followed. All three were in the wagter and all were successful in making multiple catches.

This was the final release of fish (6 of 6) funded by the 2018 Ocelots Grants Program Awards. It's been fabulous enrichments for the bears and for those of us who enjoy watching them.

This is 18 year old Tatqiq (Ursus maritimus) stalking one of her fish in the shallow end of the pool San Diego Zoo's Polar Bear Plunge.

Conservation status: Vulnerable

Two snow leopards at the San Diego Zoo received special enrichment this morning, in the form of more than 30,000 pounds of snow blown into their habitat. Penny, an almost 3-year-old female leopard, seemed to enjoy the cold, soft substance; while Anna, a 13-year-old female leopard, wasn’t quite as enthralled with her snowy surroundings. This was the first time the leopards had experienced snow in their habitat at the Barlin-Kahn Family Panda Trek area of the Zoo.

When first let into their exhibits, Penny cautiously entered, checking out her snow-covered surroundings. She appeared reluctant to explore, at first, but quickly exhibited her natural behaviors by clawing and scent-marking her habitat, and then dug up a femur bone buried by her keepers, and settled in a corner to eat. Once she was finished eating, she made the decision to play—and play she did: climbing, jumping, running, sliding and rolling in the snow. In her habitat next door, Anna climbed and explored briefly, and then chose to perch on an overhead walkway, warming herself in the sun and shying away from the snow.

The special snow enrichment for the leopards was made possible by a generous donor. Enrichment is important for the animals, as it keeps them stimulated and active, allowing them to show their natural behaviors. Individuals can help the San Diego Zoo provide enrichment in various forms by donating to the Zoo’s online Animal Care Wish List. The Wish List can be described as an online “gift registry” for animals at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It is updated monthly and can be found at sandiegozoo.org/wishlist.

The San Diego Zoo is home to three snow leopards—Penny, Anna and Ramil, an adult male. Snow leopards are native to the cold, rugged mountains of central Asia. They are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, primarily due to habitat loss and poaching. It is estimated that just 7,000 snow leopards exist in the wild. San Diego Zoo Global supports the Snow Leopard Trust and the Amur Leopard and Tiger Alliance, two organizations working to conserve these animals in their natural habitats.

Sometimes, zookeepers will place scents on objects, to be used as enrichment for the animals. Cinnamon and other spices are commonly used.

The San Diego Zoo’s giant pandas, female Bai Yun (pronounced by-YOON) and male Xiao Liwu (pronounced sshyaoww-lee-WOO) were treated to some special enrichment this morning (March 2, 2017), in celebration of World Wildlife Day. Zoo volunteers created banners and several decorative items for the bears’ habitats, in which keepers placed some of the bears’ favorite treats.

A Bone Chilling several minutes on the Beach at Dungeness, as the "Beast from the East", starts to get going.

Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name of the power station and a few other nearby buildings near the beach, and of an important ecological site at the same location.

Dungeness is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities and birdlife. This is recognised and protected mostly through its conservation designations as a National Nature Reserve (NNR), a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and part of the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) of Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay.

There is a remarkable variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plant: a third of all those found in Britain. It is one of the best places in Britain to find insects such as moths, bees and beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain.

The short-haired bumblebee, Bombus subterraneus, was last found in the UK in 1988, but has survived in New Zealand after being shipped there more than 100 years ago. It is to be reintroduced at Dungeness. It is planned that the first bees will be introduced in the spring of 2010.

The flooded gravel pits on Denge Beach, both brackish and fresh water, provide an important refuge for many migratory and coastal bird species. The RSPB has a bird sanctuary there and every year thousands of bird watchers descend on the peninsula to catch a glimpse of a rare bird from the bird observatory.

One of the most remarkable features of the site is an area known as 'the patch' or, by anglers, as 'the boil'. The waste hot water and sewage from the Dungeness nuclear power stations are pumped into the sea through two outfall pipes, enriching the biological productivity of the sea bed and attracting seabirds from miles around.

Beach fishing is popular at Dungeness, with the area being a nationally recognised cod fishing venue in the winter.

The name Dungeness derives from Old Norse nes: "headland", with the first part probably connected with the nearby Denge Marsh. Popular etymology ascribes a French origin to the toponym, giving an interpretation as "dangerous nose".

This is one happy lion and I have to say he knows how to handle a ball lol. He surprises me how co-ordinated he is and just how much he loves this game even if it is in the rain.
