Sometimes you just know they know how to escape another photograph. I love the light & bokeh here and not too disappointed about missing focus on the bird. It's how it was.

... one is never enough.

In many years I've started the motorbike season in the end of March but now it seems quite impropable.

Funnily enough, the very kind person I bought my enlarger from pointed me to this spot for photos. I made quite a few nice exposures there, this being one of them.

I enlarged this negative onto a paper I hadn't yet worked with before, Labaphot Labaspeed AS 314 PE. I wasn't sure that it would work at all, the box I have was given to me by a friend and I guess it was made some time in the 1980s (judging by the postal code given on the box label). I thought it might've been fogged to hell and back but it wasn't! In a previous lith test (yesterday), it didn't seem to develop any image at all but I suspect it might have not been the paper's fault, I imagine it could lith, judging by statements given on the box – "Das PE-Papier mit Barytqualität" and the fact that it doesn't include any development-enhancing chemicals. I guess another test will show.

I must say that I love how this print looks in person, I think the scan doesn't do it enough justice. I've found that to be typical in the domain of scanning darkroom prints but it's especially so with this one. The finish quality is excellent, probably the best pearl finish I've seen to date. The ever so slight color hue and soft rendering of tonal gradations, it's just beautiful to witness. The paper might look really well with a bit of selenium toning from what I can tell/was told. There's some selenium toner on its way to me, we'll see!

Some dodging was performed here, there's some telltale signs if you look closely enough ;)

was going to upload a red tail hawk series today but then the snow happened

I blew up a suitcase.

But that's probably not enough info.

Briefly - Tannerite is a legal binary explosive used in reactive targets for long-range shooters. When its two components are mixed, it is still stable, only detonating if struck by an object moving at 2,000fps or faster.

The charge in this video is a half-pound, the standard-sized charge. I had shot at over a dozen Tannerite targets prior to this shot, and while the explosions were loud, they weren't all that impressive. So when my neighbor gave me an old suitcase he was throwing out and I got the brilliant idea to put a Tannerite charge in there, I thought that, at best, it would simply tear a big ragged hole in the suitcase or something.

Had I actually taken a physics course in college, I probably would have had a better understanding about explosions and the expansion of gases and such. Hell - I even got CLOSER because I didn't think it'd be that bad. As you can see, this went way beyond a ragged hole in the suitcase - the whole damned thing blowed up, smacking me and my friend Jose with debris.

This was actually incredibly stupid and not something I'd repeat - at least not at such close range. We really could have gotten hurt.

That said - it's still funny as hell and I can't stop laughing about it.

There are 35 images in my Burrowing Owl album - this photo shows one of the first and only Burrowing Owls that I have ever been fortunate enough to see in the wild. To say that it was a thrill is an understatement! These endangered owls are tiny and so difficult to see, especially when they are down in the grasses. They are a true delight when or if they are seen on a fence post, so that the whole of the bird can be seen, not just a bright yellow eye peering out between the blades of grass. We saw two different individuals, possibly three, and for a brief moment both were perched on distant fence posts at the same time. Most of the time, though, they were mainly hidden in the grass, so my photos tend to be of "eyes". Such a great pity that this is an endangered species!

Without the help of two friends (Ron and Joyce) who helped us know where we might find these birds, and friends Cathy and Terry who invited me to go with them on a wonderful three-day trip to Waterton Lakes National Park, I would never have had this amazing sighting. For years, I had longed to see a wild Burrowing Owl, but never thought it would actually happen! Same for Cathy and Terry, so all three of us are SO grateful for the help we received! I'm still on a natural high and I know I will be for some time yet : )

During out three days away, we saw so many things, I hardly know where to start. This always happens when I go anywhere with Cathy and Terry - every day is a very long, fun-filled day, full of exciting finds.

Perhaps I will simply mention some of the things and then add more detail to each photo as I add them to my photostream. Of course, we couldn't have had a more beautiful area to explore! Waterton Lakes National Park has amazing scenery and wildlife. The weather forecast that I saw before we left Calgary said that we were in for three beautiful days of sunshine - too often, it can be rainy weather. So, luck was on our side, giving us warm, sunny days - until the BIG STORM hit, lol! We drove eastwards from the park, hoping to see Yellow-bellied Marmots and, if we were really lucky, a Burrowing Owl. Yesterday, I posted a photo of the storm that was approaching very fast, around 5:00 p.m. just before we started our return trip to Calgary. It was like nothing I had ever seen before - a menacing shelf (?) cloud that was travelling fast and furious. Despite trying our best to get away from it, it eventually engulfed our car, surrounding us with more or less zero visibility, pounding hail, thunder and lightning. There was nothing to do but stop the car and sit tight, hoping that the hail would not break the car windows and that this severe thunderstorm would not develop into a tornado! This storm was very scary, but at the same time, exciting (only because all turned out OK in the end!). Our road trip sure went out with a bang! Someone from the Alberta Tornado Watch told me that this particular storm was a Mesocyclone.

So, a few of the things we saw - fantastic scenery, 4 Black Bears (including one that was swimming in the lake), Bison, Deer, Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels, Chipmunks, various bird species including the Burrowing Owls, a few wildflowers, several Yellow-bellied Marmots (a first for me!), a few different insect species, and a family of Dusky Grouse (uncommon in Waterton Lakes National Park). I even got the chance to see three or four new-to-me old, wooden grain elevators.

Cathy and Terry, thanks so much for yet another wonderful trip with you! Can't thank you enough for inviting me along. You always do such a great job of finding so many interesting things for us to see and enjoy. Lots of fun!

"As a result of the Burrowing Owl's ENDANGERED Species status in 1995, it has the focus of a variety of conservation efforts. Operation Burrowing Owl and other projects involving habitat preservation with landowners have been created. Populations are monitored by Fish and Wildlife departments. They have been reintroduced into the British Columbia interior, where it was extirpated. Outlook would improve if larger areas of habitat were preserved and harmful pesticides were banned in all areas of their range. Numbers could increase if an increased tolerance to burrowing mammals develops (i.e. badgers) – provides homes for the Burrowing Owl. Outlook: perilous." From burrowingowl.com.

The boulders here are hard enough that the scavengers who have taken over the abandoned quarry south of downtown prefer not to strike them directly with their hammers. They heat the rocks first — with flaming tires, scrap plastic, even old rubber boots — so that the stones will fracture more easily. At dusk, when three or four blazes spew choking black clouds across the huge pit, the quarry looks like a woodcut out of Dante.

At the mouth of this stone quarry in Pune Maharashtra, diminutive women in saris toil 14 hour shifts breaking boulders into cricket-ball sized chunks of stone. Sledgehammers cut through to the air to the sound of splintering stone. Just behind them roared large machines that chewed up stone only to spit out construction gravel. Almost everybodies face was smeared with a white dust. A dust, heavy and suffocating, floating in the air like mist covering everything.

I don't care what the Netflix subtitles say, I'm not calling it Antique.

So, now that's all taken care of I can show you my latest project that's definitely not been sitting around for a few weeks: Anteiku! Took a while to get right, the floor plans were something that took a great deal of time to get right, but I think I cracked it. It's got the works, five floors, a roof area, plants, everything seen in the anime...

Except for characters and the entire furnishings of the floors above and below the cafe bit. The main build was enough to worry about, let alone doing all the interior decorating. I'll get to it one day, but for now it's just got the cafe.

You would not believe how hard it is to work out where things should be, I'm not even sure if the actual Anteiku works irl, lots of bits that don't quite line up.

But I like what I managed to do. Maybe I'll even work out some interiors for the other floors.

"You've messed up nothing," she whispers, just loud enough to be heard over the wind. "Nothing at all. I promise you that, with all my heart."

Conor sucks in another breath, lips pressed together hard and eyes all but squeezing shut. "I want... I want... I want it to be like before. I want -my- pillow and I don't want to pretend and I want it to be -easy- again. .... "

Slowly she would wrap her arms around him tight, not caring that he smells like little boy. "Me, too," she says softly. "And it will. If you don't believe anything else I ever say, believe me when I tell you that you messed -nothing- up. You're the one person in all this who's -not.-" She laughs, very quietly, but the humor is faint. "Don't give up hope, Conor. I'm doing everything I can to make it like before, and other people are, too. If you can't trust us, then believe in us. Can you do that?"

Conor nods slowly, though his eyes betray him. "I believe in -her-," whispered softly. Not quite an answer to the question she asked, but the only one he'll give. And as much as he wants to believe her he just can't. Those gentle promises breathed out from the wrong pair of lips. He doesn't resist the hug, just concentrates on holding himself together. Too big a boy to be sobbing on top of a roof, too sweet of a boy not to. He settles on something in between, eyes lifted skywards to hold the tears in, breath ragged as he pats her softly. A small, somewhat dirt crusted hand, just patting gently on her shoulderblade. "Don't be sad too, Miss Winny. Please?"

I hate that the umbrella pole is in the photo at all, let alone right smack in the middle of it. I just couldn't resist their theatrical faces and that little stream of water coming from the squirt gun.

With enough time we all see what was right in front of us, and realize no matter how long it took, it was worth the wait.

I FIND MY DORM ROOM EASY ENOUGH, I KNOW I’LL BE SHARING IT WITH ONE OTHER GUY THIS YEAR. HOPEFULLY HE’S NOT A COMPLETE & UTTER TWAT, AS I DON’T HAVE THE BEST PATIENCE. WHEN I OPEN THE FRONT DOOR, THE FIRST THING I NOTICE IS THE AMAZING VIEW OF THE BEACH. THE SECOND THING I NOTICE IS THE STACK OF CARDBOARD BOXES IN THE LOUNGE. I TRAVELLED LIGHTLY, NOT THAT I HAD THAT MUCH TO PACK. I’M DISRUPTED FROM MY THOUGHTS WHEN I HEAR FOOTSTEPS COMING DOWN THE STAIRS. THEY BELONG TO A BIG GUY, WHO LOOKS LIKE HE WORKS OUT & PLAYS SPORTS. HOPEFULLY IT’S FOOTBALL SO WE HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON. HE SEES ME & WALKS STRAIGHT OVER & INTRODUCES HIMSELF. “HI, I’M JACKSON THE NEW JUNIOR WIDE RECEIVER, YOU MUST BE KASSIUS THE QUARTERBACK?” RELIEVED, I REPLY, “THAT’S ME, BUT YOU CAN CALL ME KASH.” HE SMILES & SAYS, “HEY KASH, I HEAR THE PARTY NEVER REALLY STARTS UNTIL YOU ARRIVE? SO IT’S A GOOD JOB WE’RE ROOMMATES BECAUSE I FUCKING LOVE TO PARTY!” AHHH FUCK IT, IT’S NOT LIKE I CAN STAY IN STUDYING EVERY NIGHT. I’M SURE A LITTLE BIT OF ‘FUN’ WON’T HURT, AS LONG AS I DON’T LET IT AFFECT MY SCHOLARSHIP….

THESE HANDSOME TWO ARE BOTH ROAMED TO LIKE TO ‘HIT IT & QUIT IT’ WHILE PARTYING HARD. SO YOU BETTER KEEP YOUR HEARTS LOCKED UP TIGHT AROUND THEM, BECAUSE LADIES THESE ARE THE GUYS THAT YOUR PARENTS WARNED YOU ABOUT. IT’S TIME TO LET THE DRINKS FLOW & THE GOOD TIMES ROLL.
