When great Carolus Linnaeus described Doris Longwing in 1771 he refers to the painting engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-1790) in the magnificent Planches enluminées d'histoire naturelle edited by Edmé-Louis Daubenton (1730-1785) from 1765 onwards on the commission of that great French naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788). The book has more than a thousand plates of which 973 are of birds; the others picture insects and corals. Regrettably that volume does not specify who (of some 70 or more painters!) actually saw Doris whether mounted in Europe or alive in South America. And Daubenton does not give a Latin classificatory name - Linnaeus a bit later called it Papilio doris - but merely refers to it colorfully as 'Le Parasol de Surinam'.

Eric Clapton "Just like a prisoner"

"Just like a prisoner, he don't know right from wrong.

Just like a baby, he sings a pleading song

And that's why so many tears must fall.

Yes, that's why so many tears must fall.

Just like a sailor, he steers away from home.

He feels a tidal wave in his heart, but he ain't alone

And that's why so many tears must fall.

Yes, that's why so many tears must fall.

I'm like that prisoner, I don't know right from wrong.

Just like that baby, I sing a pleading song

And that's why you'll never know how I feel.

Yes, that's why you'll never know how I feel.""

1 Kings 6:35 “Solomon also inlaid the doors with cherubim, palm trees, and blooming flowers. He overlaid them with gold that was carefully applied on the engraved work.”

HMM-- methinks this will be my choice for the theme for today 4/2 "back in the day". does anybody even use fancy cloth napkins much, except for holidays?

Skansen open-air museum founded in 1891. Five centuries of Swedish history, from north to south, with a real sense of the past all around in the historical buildings and dwellings, peopled by characters in period dress.

The story is engraved on the base of the statue at Koh Samui Guan Yu Shrine.

An interesting place, this. Who would call their restaurant "Sea gull shit"?

Very good food covering all tastes, and no guano in sight.

And I can't remember what was in the glass - a beer I think - the bottle behind made the fluid look green

Alumni House has a storied history, starting in 1930 when it became the 7th building on campus.

Currently, Alumni House houses the Office of Alumni Advancement, a sub department of University Advancement that handles alumni relations and general giving to the university.

But Alumni House hasn’t always been Alumni House. In fact, it’s only been Alumni House for 9 years, before that it was the President’s Residence. For a time, the Presidents of the university and their families lived in the house. The last President to reside here was President Peter George. He left in 2003 allowing Alumni Advancement to renovate the upstairs into office space, while leaving the first floor as it was; a living room, library, and dining room. You'll also find a rock garden along the front walkway planted for the University's 85th anniversary of being in Hamilton. Each rock is engraved with the names of the Presidents who have served McMaster since it came to Hamilton in 1930. A lovely gift made possible by the class of 2013 as their graduating class gift.

During the 1940s, Alumni House was known as Wallingford Annex, which was a small dormitory for around 15 “freshettes” attending McMaster.

For the first decade, Alumni House was the Chancellor’s Residence (a reflection of the President’s title at that time). In 1933, Chancellor Howard Primrose Whidden moved in, making him the first occupant of the house. Chancellor Whidden was also one of the first students to graduate from McMaster, being a grad of 1894!

All the names of Christ's genealogy are engraved on the column above the center door. The serpent with the apple is found at the base, and the culmination of the baby Jesus is engraved just above where the column meets the larger facade. On either side are the ox and the mule.

During WW2 it was badly damaged by a German bomber. When it was rebuilt the stained glass windows were replaced by clear engraved glass windows which were created by Laurence Whistler.

Also the funeral of Laurence of Arabia was held at this church.

These are not the easiest of windows to take due to the clear glass and the refection and colours from the outside showing through but hopefully it will give you some idea of the windows. Some of the images are just a small section taken from just one part of a larger window.
