False Mirrors

***

Yes, you remember,

You certainly remember

The way I listened

Standing at the wall

As you walked to and fro about the chamber

Reproving me

With bitter words and all.

You said

That it was time we’d parted,

And that my reckless life,

For you, was an ordeal,

And it was time a new life you had started

While I was fated

To go rolling downhill.

I received this on Whatsapp from someone, and every line of it speaks to me. Raise your hand if you are of my generation and identify with it!

I was raised in Mumbai, which once used to be Bombay. We had Eating out at a restaurant was a big deal that only happened on rare occasions like birthdays or anniversaries.

There was no such thing as fast food, so a bottle of cola and an ice cream cone from the local shop were a tremendous treat.

If you pass your final examinations, you may earn a new outfit or a pair of shoes from the Bata company.

You changed out of your school clothes as soon as you came home and into your ‘home’ attire. There was no driving you anywhere; you had to take the school bus, take public transportation, or walk home. You arrived home and completed your chores and schoolwork before supper. Not everyone had a home phone, and until recently, all private conversations took place at PCO booths.

Does anybody remember Phanstom Sweet Cigarettes? In the 70s, it was mainly for a Phantom cigarette, anybody? a boy to strut around with one of these ciggies in the mouth. Like Amitabh Bachchan and his half-chewed beedi in ‘Deewar’. They weren’t tobacco-stuffed cigarettes, of course. Just white candy sticks made of chalky sugar with a red tip that looked like the real thing. They were sickly sweet. But popular. As far as my pocket money could stretch, I was a Phantom cigarette addict. Not because of Mr. Bachchan’s swag, but because of all the masked and caped comic book superheroes back then – the Phantom was my favorite. Associating with the brand made me feel proud, indeed.

The Phantom, however, in all his jungle adventures by Lee Falk, never smoked. Nor did he drink. He wasn’t into sweets, too. But I thought it was cool to appear with a packet of Phantoms. And to offer them around as grownups did. By the time I learned that sugar candy was as harmful as, say, a cigarette,

To the guys who understand; to the ones who desire to improve.

To the guys who have had the guts to lie broken on the floor; to the men who have faced each change with bravery and purpose. They stood firm, naked in their truth.

To the guys who have given all and been left with nothing, but who demonstrate love every day, in every manner.

I have always believed in two daytime practices: eating when hungry; and, napping when sleepy. Long before corporates began encouraging employees to snatch a mid-shift snooze during the day, when sleeping on the job was considered a taboo, I used to catch 40 winks post-lunch every day at work. A mental health guru had advised me to allow for some quiet time during the day. A period for meditation. For calm or introspection. Instead, I started taking 20-minute naps in the afternoon. The benefits, taken from a study of companies committed to employee wellness that recognize the benefits of napping at work, are listed below. Very simply I will tell you what the practice does for me: it recharges me for the rest of the day. It’s a wise practice. For everybody at some time becomes tired and loses focus while at work. Particularly during summer.

More and more companies that are making employees shut down and shut-eye for 20 minutes every afternoon are reporting an increase in productivity.

Moral: A Good Deed is always repeat Good Deed. (One Good Turn Deserves Another)

There’s a new Bollywood film that’s released today called ‘Runway 34’. And it’s different. An aviation thriller made on a real-life incident. First of its kind for Indian cinema. Also, I am glad to report, not a South remake. My friend Ajay Devgn directed, produced, and acted in the film. With the lovely Rakul Preet Singh (in a pilot’s uniform that unfortunately hides her bronzed and toned body and sculpted legs) and an outstanding Amitabh Bachchan. Ajay and Rakul play pilots.

They’re struggling to land a stricken flight from Dubai in bad weather and zero visibility at Trivandrum airport. They manage to do so and save all 150 passengers. But are put through a harsh Airport Accident Investigation Bureau probe ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Which is conducted with all the cunning intelligence and cut-and-thrust of an edgy courtroom drama by a sly and charming Bachchan.

The first half of the film is a thriller and all about the flight. The second half is the gritty investigation. I have flown some bad flights in my time.

On my mother’s loft in her home that is currently under lock and key (she’s been staying with me all through Covid) is the frame of a racer cycle I had in the 1980s. It’s a Marco Polo bike. Of Dutch origin, I think, or English. Light as a feather. And fitted with accessories that back in the day were unavailable for love or money but could be got through the beg-borrow-steal practice. I was training to enter racing at the state and national levels. That didn’t happen. But the cycle remains with me. On World Cycling Day, yesterday, I thought of it. The frame, some black-and-white pictures, are all I have to remind me of cycling back then.

The most prestigious race in the country was the 160-km Bombay-Poona that was in January. It also had prize money for the first three cyclists to reach Panvel and then Khopoli and Talegaon. The route was the old National Highway 66. With a special and coveted prize for the cyclist who conquered the treacherous Bhor Ghats first and entered Khandala. The champion cyclists than were a group of Parsi boys from Bombay and a couple of gritty cyclists from Poona. Punjab had arguably the best cyclists in the country but they reserved their stamina and saved their cycles for the Nationals at Patiala and never entered the Bombay-Poona.

One Sunday two schoolboys rounded up three Goats in the neighborhood. They painted the numbers 1, 2, and 4 on their sides. That night, they let the goats loose inside their school. Monday morning, when the authorities entered the school, they were met with a mess. There were Goat droppings all over and the premises stank. A search was organized and they soon found the three Goats. But the authorities were perplexed. The Goats were numbered 1, 2, and 4. Where was Goat No. 3? They spent the rest of the day looking for the missing Goat after declaring all classes canceled. Teachers, students, peons, watchmen, canteen staff, bus drivers, and even the principal joined in the search. But Goat No. 3 could not be found simply because it did not exist.

Isn’t it that way with us, too? Despite those of us having a good life we are always dissatisfied and feel a lack of fulfillment so we spend time looking for the elusive Goat No. 3 in our lives. Whatever the dissatisfaction, whether it is over a job, a relationship, home, health, finance, or personal goals the absence of something is always greater than the presence of many other things in our lives. So, stop worrying about the indefinable Goat No. 3 and learn to enjoy what you have in life

Know what I’m craving? A glass of Matka ka Pani. Back in those days when not every

family could afford a fridge, and water filters and purifiers were not heard of, every home had an earthen Matka used to store drinking water. It would stand in the kitchen in a corner. A plump, round pot of clay sometimes attached with a steel or brass tap. When you came home, the first thing you did was drink a glass of Matka ka Pani.

Far too many people are living lives that are not their own. Such people don’t have to be behind bars to be prisoners. They become prisoners of their own notions, decisions, and ideas by striving to meet the expectations of everyone but themselves.

These people spend their lives doing what others believe is best for them, including their parents, friends, adversaries, teachers, the government, and the media. They disregard their intuition and inner voice.

Such people are so concerned with pleasing everyone that they have forgotten what makes them happy, what they want, and what they require… They gradually forget about themselves.

You only have one life – this one right now – and you must live it, own it, and, most importantly, do not let other people’s ideas distract you from your truth.
