Reporting of the BoS Meeting of SSS: .

Strengthen the Struggle for a Socially-Inclusive Academics .

The Board of Studies (BoS) meeting for the School of Social Sciences was held today. For the first time in four years, the meeting was attended by the students representatives. For nearly four years there was no mention of the several serious issues faced by the students in these meetings. Realizing the diversified nature of the students problems that had for long been un-addressed, a series of initiatives were undertaken by the SSS councilors to ensure that the students voices are effectively represented in the appropriate forums.A school level GBM was first called to identify the various problems just a few days after the elections. While action on several concerns regarding basic infrastructural facilities was immediately taken up by contacting the concerned authorities, the issues which could be decided only in the BoS meeting were also identified and a note was prepared on the same. The convener wrote to the Dean to ensure that these issues were included in the BoS agenda and circulated to the others members in an attempt to build a consensus on the same. .

In todays meeting the pressing issues related to Development of a sensitization module to be offered as a compulsory course, More optional courses for BA students of SLL&CS, Setting up of a translation cell, Student Representation in school level library committees, Regularization of SFCs and Initiation of School level students journal, were raised by the student representatives. We are pleased to inform the students, that on several issues, the BoS was forced to acknowledge and accept the students demands. The outcome of the meeting is as follows: .

Development of a sensitization programme addressing gender, caste, regional and religious issues: Several members of the faculty welcomed JNUSUs suggestion for a mandatory sensitization module adding the need for the sensitization to also address the issues pertaining to caste, religious and regional biases besidesgender. The Dean said that the suggestion would be seriously considered with inputs from Centre for Women Studies and Centre for Exclusion and Discriminatory Studies. .

More Optional Courses for BA students from SLL & CS: The members present in the meeting agreed for the need to offer more optionals for the students of SLL & CS and ensure that the same would be beneficial for them. The suggestion that even those centres offer optionals which did not have an MA programme was included in the minutes of the meeting. .

Student Representation inschool level library committees: The demand for student representation in school .

level library committees was positively received and it was ensured that students representatives would represent the students in these committees. Regularization of SFCs: The student representatives raised serious concerns about the non-satisfactory and tokenistic functioning of the SFCs in many centres. The faculty members were forced to acknowledge that in several centres the SFC meetings were not being held regularly and also that there was a need to the make the meeting space more democratic. The members agreed that there was a need to revitalize the SFCs and ensure its more effective and regular functioning. .

Initiation of School level students journal: The suggestion for the school level students journal was met with a debate within the faculty members regarding the feasibility and theneed for it. The students representatives were ableto press its necessity arguing that it was necessary to facilitate a process whereby students of various centres of the school can share their work and also learn about others research. Consequently, some members responded saying that the school authorities should facilitate such initiatives and some members also agreed to help the student representatives begin such an initiative towards an e-journal. .

Setting up of a translation cell: The demandfor settingupof a translationcell was met withintensediscussions anddebates.A few members felt that since JNU offered support or remedial programmes for English, a translation cell was not required. However, the student representatives strongly put the forth the argument that access to difficult texts could not be restricted to those with adequate skills in English. Given that JNU has a socio-economically inclusive and a progressive admission policy, there are several students belonging to socio-economically deprived backgrounds who enter the university after having done their early education in non-Englishmedium institutions and therefore on entering JNU they face considerable difficulties in following texts such as writings by and on Foucault, Derrida and several others. The councilors argued that it was important to recognize their difficulties in engagingwith such texts becauseof the accompanying difficulties in following English. Therewere also faculty members who while acknowledging the language problems, expressed their skepticism regarding translations. They were reminded that several readings in School of Social Sciences were already translations from other European languages in which the texts were orginally written. Thus if translations of such texts in English were possible, there was no reason to deny the availability of the same in vernacular languages too. The Dean said that the matter should sent back to the centers for wider consultation. The members were also reminded of the fact that such translations of academic texts were already available in certain universities and the same should at least be made available in the school and central libraries. We are aware that this demand would have to be built in to a strong student movement in days to come. .

While congratulating the students for their unrelenting support, we would also like to appeal to them that they rally with the JNUSUs demand for a translation cell to be set up in the university in order to ensure that no student is forced to discontinue or face increased .

hardships due to language difficulties. We have to further unitedly struggle to ensure that the academic vibrancy of this campus is retained along with safeguarding our democratic spaces of representation such as the SFCs. We appeal to the students to stay vigilant and see that the positive response to our demands is translated into concrete actions. .
