In June of every year the Corps of Engineers holds an open house at the Soo Locks, and thousands of fans show up to explore the grounds, view the passing ships from an unusual perspective, and look over the exhibits. Yesterday was that day, and Joan and I were among the crowd. Here we see some of the visitors crossing the massive gate which holds back Lake Superior at the the downriver end of the 105 foot wide Poe Lock.

While Sault Ste. Marie is an ancient city by North American standards--the first white settlers arrived in the 1500s, and there's been a city at this location since 1638--the event which defines the modern Sault occurred on June 18, 1855, when a ship named the Illinois traversed the then-new Soo Locks and opened traffic between Lake Superior and the rest of the Great Lakes--thus connecting the Lake Superior iron and copper mines to the eastern United States. The locks have been rebuilt and expanded since then, but the traffic's been constant, and constitute an important part of the American economy.

They're celebrating the sesquicentennial this summer, and the celebration began yesterday. We missed the opening ceremony, but had a fine time wandering the grounds and watching as St. Clair and Herbert C. Jackson passed through the locks yesterday.

Four years ago I had the pleasure of attending Engineers Day at the Soo Locks. The first ship I had the opportunity to see go through was the Arthur M. Anderson.

The Anderson was the last ship to have radio contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald on November 10, 1975.

Since we were already up north for the car show (see yesterday's On This Date), we headed to Sault Ste Marie for Engineer's Day. And watched the big boats from up close.

St Clair's a 770 foot vessel, launched in 1975 to ferry coal to the Belle River power plant. She now carries other bulk cargoes, like most lakers.

We'll be heading north for Engineer's Day again this Friday, but we're staying at a Soo hotel this time. See some of you there!

Another Engineers Day photo from last June.

The highway bridge, the rail bridge, and the bridge of the (ship) St. Clair; Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on Engineers Day, 2005.

This is a technically dreadful picture--I shot it though the windshield, from the passenger side--but the composition's interesting enough that I thought I'd share it. Seem to be doing that a lot this week.

On a late Friday in June, the Corps of Engineers lets the tourists wander around the grounds at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Engineers Day, 2005, doubled as a kickoff to the Sault Locks Sesquicentennial. Best large; there's some great detail in this pic.

Joan took this marvelous photograph of St. Clair in the Poe Lock, from the edge of the Macarthur Lock. I've cropped a lot of distracting nonsense from the shot, but the vision is hers. I took nothing half this good that day.

Engineers day is an open house, geared toward grade school and middle school children. We use the poster as an announcement, mailing to all the schools, science and math teachers, and principals. The "big blue" space glider and competition car are in this year's poster.
