An energetic outburst from an infant star streaks across this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. This stellar tantrum — produced by an extremely young star in the earliest phase of formation — consists of an incandescent jet of gas travelling at supersonic speeds. As the jet collides with material surrounding the still-forming star, the shock heats this material and causes it to glow. The result is the colourfully wispy structures, which astronomers refer to as Herbig–Haro objects, billowing across the lower left of this image.
Herbig–Haro objects are seen to evolve and change significantly over just a few years. This particular object, called HH34, was previously captured by Hubble between 1994 and 2007, and again in glorious detail in 2015. HH34 resides approximately 1250 light-years from Earth in the Orion Nebula, a large region of star formation visible to the unaided eye. The Orion Nebula is one of the closest sites of widespread star formation to Earth, and as such has been pored over by astronomers in search of insights into how stars and planetary systems are born.
The data in this image are from a set of Hubble observations of four nearby bright jets with the Wide Field Camera 3 taken to help pave the way for future science with the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope. Webb — which will observe at predominantly infrared wavelengths — will be able to peer into the dusty envelopes surrounding still-forming protostars, revolutionising the study of jets from these young stars. Hubble’s high-resolution images of HH34 and other jets will help astronomers interpret future observations with Webb.

Energetic, quick moving and always fluttering its wings.
The very long tails are the hallmark of the summer brood. An early spring, multi-brooded butterfly with each successive brood displays bolder stripes and longer tails.
This energetic whale is a Humpback which I photographed off the Island of South Georgia. This was the most frequently encountered species of whale on this trip to Antarctica. It is easily identified by its enormously long flippers which give rise to its scientific name Megaptera, which means giant wing. We did see Southern Right Whale breaching as well but unfortunately my photographs of that were rubbish.

The Rovinari power station is a 1,320-megawatt (MW) coal (lignite) fired power station in Romania. It is one of the largest electricity producers in Romania, having 4 groups of 330 MW each thus totaling an installed capacity of 1,320 MW.
The four units were constructed between 1976 and 1979 and are considered to be the most efficient, low cost electricity generators in the country. In 2014 new FGD with Wet Booster Fans and Pennguard lined concrete chimneys were added to limit the emissions
- www.kevin-palmer.com - Every tidal cycle brought something different. An endless stream of icebergs floated down the fjord, stranding themselves in this small bay when the tide turned. Earlier that morning there were so many pieces of ice that I couldn’t even walk across this beach. But by nightfall most were carried away and only a few remained. It was my last night in Nuuk and the forecast called for 80% clouds. I just had to wait for that 20% gap. Geomagnetic activity wasn’t particularly high either, but this far north it doesn’t take much. Greenland is located under the auroral oval, where shows like this may happen any time the sky is clear and dark enough. When fringes of purple or pink line the swirls of aurora, it’s often associated with bright, rapid movement. A still image doesn't even begin to show all that's happening in the sky. Rays of light pulse inward from every direction, converging overhead at the zenith. It’s mesmerizing to watch and hard to look away from, though part of me wished I had a second camera with me to capture it all.

This is "Stone" in action. He's a cross of a Siberian Husky and a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog.
"Stone" accompanied us on our photography trip last Sunday around Plaffeien (Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland) together with Nicole Schafer, a good friend of mine. She has serveral Huskies and takes part in sled dog races too.
And of course she's a gifted photographer, watch her pics here.

The Siberian Husky (Russian: Сибирский хаски, Sibirskiy haski, "Siberian husky") is a medium-size, dense-coat working dog breed that originated in north-eastern Siberia. The breed belongs to the Spitz genetic family. It is recognisable by its thickly furred double coat, sickle tail, erect triangular ears, and distinctive markings.
Huskies are an active, energetic, and resilient breed whose ancestors came from the extremely cold and harsh environment of the Siberian Arctic. Siberian Huskies were bred by the Chukchi of Northeastern Asia to pull heavy loads long distances through difficult conditions. The dogs were imported into Alaska during the Nome Gold Rush and later spread into the United States and Canada. They were initially sent to Alaska and Canada as sled dogs but rapidly acquired the status of family pets and show dogs.
The word Husky originated from the word referring to Arctic people in general, Eskimos, "...known as Huskies, a contraction of Huskimos, the pronunciation given to the word Eskimos by the English sailors of trading vessels." Use of Husky is recorded from 1852 for dogs kept by Eskimo people.
Husky type dogs are energetic and athletic. They usually have a thick double coat. Huskies are known for pale blue eyes, although they may also have brown eyes. Huskies commonly have different colored eyes, called heterochromia of the eye.
The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog (or Vlčák/Vlčiak) is a relatively new breed of dog that traces its original lineage to an experiment conducted in 1955 in Czechoslovakia. After initially breeding 48 working line German Shepherds with 4 Carpathian wolves, a plan was worked out to create a breed that would have the temperament, pack mentality, and trainability of the German Shepherd and the strength, physical build, and stamina of the Carpathian wolf. The breed was engineered to assist with border patrol in Czechoslovakia but were later also used in search and rescue, schutzhund, tracking, herding, agility, obedience, and drafting. It was officially recognized as a national breed in Czechoslovakia in 1982, in 1999 it became FCI standard no. 332, group 1, section 1.

I may have spoilt this drawing of our previous dog Sam but I like to carry on to the end, in the hope I've created something decent! I started off last week with my watercolour pencils, but for Mother's Day (last Sunday), Matt gave me some fine liner pens and I got a bit carried away here! I started with my Arteza 'real brush' pens which were deeper coloured than I expected! So I had to carry on, and I added some small detail with the new pens Matt gave me!
So this is Sam, who we adopted in this country in 2000. We were told he was around 2 years old. He'd been with a couple who had come home drunk one night. One of them sat on him and he bit them, so was taken to the police station where they asked for him to be put to sleep! It was obvious he wasn't a dangerous dog and sent to the rescue centre. An elderly couple had tried to take him on but found he was too energetic and strong, so we ended up with him! We had him till 2014, but had to have him put to sleep when his back legs wouldn't work and he had daily accidents around the house. He was a lovely gentle dog.

Energy is a physical property that we talk about, but have a difficult time understanding. It differs from mass in that we cannot hold it in our hands, Its all around us but we can't see it. It transforms ocean water into rain. Sends sparks of electricity through the clouds before a thunderstorm. Some scientist say that everything is nothing but energy, that mass is just a manifestation of energy. as is light, heat and motion.
Hiking along this beautiful Ozark stream one has to be struck by the powerful force of this water. Water that is not much different than the what flows through your tap (minus the chlorine). Except it has been energized.
I wanted to capture this flow of energy. To do this I hiked down a steep ravine and stood on the bank, bent down close to the surface of the water where it slammed up against granite rocks and exploded in splendor. Positioned my camera where the water almost jumped out of the banks in turmoil. I wanted you to see the turbulence, feel the force, smell the mist as it rises off the surface.

Jaromír Jágr (born 15 February 1972) is a Czech professional ice hockey right winger and owner of Rytíři Kladno of the Czech Extraliga. He previously played in the National Hockey League for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers and Calgary Flames, serving as captain of the Penguins from 1998-2001 and the Rangers, between 2006 and 2008.
After leaving the Rangers in 2008, he played three seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Avangard Omsk. He returned to the NHL in 2011 with the Flyers and remained in the league for seven more years before being assigned by the Flames in 2018 to HC Kladno. Having played in 37 professional seasons (as of 2024) and over 2,000 professional games, Jágr has had the longest playing career in professional ice hockey history. He is the most productive European player who has ever played in the NHL and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever.
Jágr has the second-most points in NHL history, after Wayne Gretzky. In 1990, at age 18, he was the youngest player in the NHL. Until his transfer, at age 45, he was the oldest player in the NHL and is the oldest player to record a hat-trick. In 2017, Jágr was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
Jágr was the fifth overall selection in the 1990 NHL entry draft. He won consecutive Stanley Cups in the 1991 and 1992 seasons with the Penguins. Individually, he has won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL scoring champion five times (four times in a row), the Lester B. Pearson Award for the NHL's outstanding player as voted by the NHL Players' Association three times, and the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league's most valuable player once, in 1999, while finishing second four times.
Jágr is a member of the Triple Gold Club, individuals who have played for teams that have won the Stanley Cup (1991, 1992), the Ice Hockey World Championships (2005, 2010) and the Olympic gold medal in ice hockey (1998). Jágr is one of only two Czech players (the other being Jiří Šlégr) in the Club, achieving this feat in 2005. Jágr was the Czech Republic's flag bearer at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Jágr is also one of only three players from 1981 to 2001 to win the Art Ross Trophy as the leading point-scorer during the regular season; the others are Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux. Jágr has won the award more times than any other non-Canadian player. He has been a member of the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame since 2008 and the IIHF Hall of Fame since 2024.

Edward, the southern white rhino calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, experienced another “first” today (Aug. 19, 2019) when he was able to explore a new area at the Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mom, Victoria. The young calf and his mom were given access to the main exhibit yard and took full advantage of the larger space, running around the perimeter at a fast pace. It was mom and calf’s first day out of the maternity yard and other off-exhibit areas since the calf was born 22 days ago. sdzoo.com/RhinoRacing
We all know bubbles from soapy baths or sodas. These bubbles of everyday experience on Earth are up to a few inches across, and consist of a thin film of liquid enclosing a small volume of air or other gas. In space, however, there are very different bubbles – composed of a lighter gas inside a heavier one – and they can be huge.
The galaxy NGC 3079, located about 67 million light years from Earth, contains two “superbubbles” unlike anything here on our planet. A pair of balloon-like regions stretch out on opposite sides of the center of the galaxy: one is 4,900 light-years across and the other is only slightly smaller, with a diameter of about 3,600 light-years. For context, one light year is about 6 trillion miles, or 9 trillion kilometers.
The superbubbles in NGC 3079 give off light in the form of X-ray, optical and radio emission, making them detectable by NASA telescopes. In this composite image, X-ray data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory are shown in purple and optical data from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope are shown in orange and blue.
New observations from Chandra show that in NGC 3079 a cosmic particle accelerator is producing ultra-energetic particles in the rims of the superbubbles. These particles can be much more energetic than those created by Europe’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful human-made particle accelerator.

This snapshot of our constantly changing Sun catches looping filaments and energetic eruptions on their outward journey from our star’s turbulent surface.
The disc of our star is a rippling mass of bright, hot active areas, interspersed with dark, cool snaking filaments that wrap around the star. Surrounding the tumultuous solar surface is the chaotic corona, a rarified atmosphere of super-heated plasma that blankets the Sun and extends out into space for millions of kilometres.
This coronal plasma reaches temperatures of several million degrees in some regions – significantly hotter than the surface of the Sun, which reaches comparatively paltry temperatures of around 6000ºC – and glows in ultraviolet and extreme-ultraviolet light owing to its extremely high temperature. By picking one particular wavelength, ESA’s Proba-2 SWAP (Sun Watcher with APS detector and Image Processing) camera is able to single out structures with temperatures of around a million degrees.
As seen in this image, taken on 25 July 2014, the hot plasma forms large loops and fan-shaped structures, both of which are kept in check by the Sun’s intense magnetic field. While some of these loops stay close to the surface of the Sun, some can stretch far out into space, eventually being swept up into the solar wind – an outpouring of energetic particles that constantly streams out into the Solar System and flows past the planets, including Earth.
Even loops that initially appear to be quite docile can become tightly wrapped and tangled over time, storing energy until they eventually snap and throw off intense flares and eruptions known as coronal mass ejections. These eruptions, made up of massive amounts of gas embedded in magnetic field lines, can be dangerous to satellites, interfere with communication equipment and damage vital infrastructure on Earth.
Despite the Sun being the most important star in our sky, much is still unknown about its behaviour. Studying its corona in detail could help us to understand the internal workings of the Sun, the erratic motions of its outer layers, and the highly energetic bursts of material that it throws off into space.
Two new ESA missions will soon contribute to this field of study: Solar Orbiter is designed to study the solar wind and region of space dominated by the Sun and also to closely observe the star’s polar regions, and the PROBA3 mission will study the Sun’s faint corona closer to the solar rim than has ever before been achieved.

The Oystercatchers are back and busy mating on the shores of New Jersey.
They are one of the loudest, most lively and energetic species, often heard way before they are seen as one approaches the beach.
They can breed twice in a season and have two clutches of eggs one now and one late in the summer. Nearly all species of oystercatcher are monogamous, although there are reports of polygamy in the Eurasian oystercatcher. They are territorial during the breeding season. There is strong mate and site fidelity in the species that have been studied, with one record of a pair defending the same site for 20 years. A single nesting attempt is made per breeding season, which is timed over the summer months.

A most aggravating bird to photograph...with her head bobbing to and fro and zigzagging through the vegetation. Took no notice of me as I volleyed off 100+ shots, just to get a clear, detailed image.
...but I did it:).....and able to see the subtle color markings on her back to show you.
I've not seen them in Minnesota nor does my bird book mention them...but they seem to be in every other part of the world!
Thanks for stopping by, I'm slowly getting back on flickr....missed you all:)...Pat.....xo...
