Fire damage is starting to fade in this section of the Smoky Mountains devastated a few years earlier when some individuals thought it would be fun to hike to the top and shoot off fireworks.
From the National Park Service website: The saguaro cactus (Carnegia gigantea) is a truly iconic symbol of the Sonoran Desert. Its remarkable size and ability to endure harsh desert conditions has endeared it to many people.
Cristate or “crested” saguaros form when the cells in the growing stem begin to divide outward, rather than in the circular pattern of a normal cactus. This is an unusual mutation which results in the growth of a large fan-shaped crest at the growing tip of a saguaro’s main stem or arms.
The cause for this mutation is unknown; however, there has been some speculation about the presence of a “trigger,” which may initiate the process. One heavily implicated
trigger is frost, as crested saguaros tend to be more common in the northernmost parts of their range. Unfortunately there is not enough evidence to confirm this theory. I took this shot in Saguaro National Park East.
Sunset on the summit of Holmepark Fell. This plateau is exposed to the prevailing "westerly" winds sweeping in off Morecambe Bay. The amazingly resilient trees that manage to eek out an existence up her on the limestone pavement face the full force of the winds. The shapes they are forced into just add to their mystique.
The sunset accentuates the stark conditions the trees endure here and as a location it is often overlooked by the many thousands of people that race past on the nearby M6 with the fells of the Lake District drawing them in! Long may that continue.
...to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.

I cannot even begin to describe the weather conditions we had to endure to get this shot. Hail stones the size of ping pong balls sums things up nicely I reckon!
This is an historical site that I have wanted to visit for quite some time, and a site that I will definitely be heading back to again at some point soon...

Although the Cape Bruny Lighthouse has been standing here since 1836, the light has been extinguished for a number of years and the keepers have gone the way of the Dodo. A light still shines (as I'll show in another photograph), but it is all automated now. Nevertheless, this tower stands as a tribute to the people who built it in difficult conditions, and it has saved many lives in its years of operation.
