If only a small piece of your tooth broke off, your dental professional might be able to protect the remainder of the tooth with a crown or filling. If the fracture is severe, endodontic surgery may be required to remove the fractured portion to protect the pulp and the tooth.
Hand reamers and files used for locating and shaping root canals in teeth. Whilst sometimes a necessary evil they are probably best avoided !!
i have one cavity in my whole mouth and it’s a doozy. i got it when i was something like 7 or 8 years old after i became convinced i couldn’t get cavities and stopped brushing my teeth and lied to my mom whenever asked. the end result of that fantasy was a mouthful of cavities, but - hurray - all were baby teeth except this one molar. so i eventually got fresh, new teeth and a great early lesson in the importance of good dental hygiene.
the tooth has given me all sort of problems over the years. i think another cavity got under the filling which fell out, then i had to have a crown and then, for reasons i can’t recall, a second crown. more than one dentist over the years has told me i would eventually need a root canal, but i was still surprised after my last dentist visit to find the time was now since i haven’t had any pain or tooth sensitivity. in hindsight i now know the slight sensitive sinus was not actually due to allergies but an abscess infection. yuck.
so i got scheduled for endodontic therapy and here you can see three endodontic cleaning files in the root canals. as it turns out the worst part of the root canal is the painful shot of local anesthetic at the beginning. the sound and smell of the drilling and the sound and feeling of the filing was more disconcerting than painful.
oh, and I AM NOT GOING TO GOOGLE THE LIKELIHOOD OF A ABSCESS INFECTION SPREADING TO THE BRAIN. NOOOOOOOPE.
Dental Crown and Bridges
Root canal treatment (also known as endodontic treatment) is necessary when the inside of the tooth and surrounding area becomes infected as a result of wear, decay or injury.
Symptoms of infection include:
Sensitivity to hot or cold food or drinks
Pain when biting or chewing
Swelling of the gum near the affected tooth
Oozing from the affected tooth
Facial swelling
The aim of root canal treatment is to save the tooth and prevent it from future infection. If ignored, the infection could spread and the tooth may need to be extracted.
During treatment your Smiles dentist will :
Remove infected or damaged tissue inside the tooth
Clean and disinfect the area
Fill and seal the space using advanced materials
Depending on the strength of the remaining structure post treatment, the tooth may require either a filling or a crown.
This 3D medical animation features a procedure called 'Root canal treatment'. This is a sequence of steps to treat the pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection and protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.

I had to get a root canal today. This is not a fun way to spend an afternoon.
However, if you find yourself in need of one, I highly recommend Dr. Ingram at Seville Endodontics. He really went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable. I was very impressed!

Dentistry usually encompasses practices related to the oral cavity. According to the World Health Organization, oral diseases are major public health problems due to their high incidence and prevalence across the globe, with the disadvantaged affected more than other socio-economic groups.
The majority of dental treatments are carried out to prevent or treat the two most common oral diseases which are dental caries (tooth decay) and peridontal disease (gum disease or pyorrhea). Common treatments involve the restoration of teeth, extraction or surgical removal of teeth, scaling and root planing and endodontic root canal treatment.

By nature of their general training dentists can carry out the majority of dental treatments such as restorative (fillings, crowns, bridges), prosthetic (dentures), endodontic (root canal) therapy, periodontal (gum) therapy, and extraction of teeth, as well as performing examinations, radiographs (x-rays), and diagnosis. Dentists can also prescribe medications such as antibiotics, sedatives, and any other drugs used in patient management.
They also encourage prevention of oral diseases through proper hygiene and regular, twice yearly, checkups for professional cleaning and evalution. Oral infections and inflammations may affect overall health and conditions in the oral cavity may be indicative of systemic diseases, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, celiac disease or cancer.
Many studies have also shown that gum disease is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, and preterm birth. The concept that oral health can affect systemic health and disease is referred to as "oral-systemic health".
