Some of its typical features are present in this image: the shaggy coat, a lighter colored neck, a fairly short tail and the large teeth.
From Wikipedia:
"The Brown Hyena (Parahyaena brunnea), also called the Strandwolf, is a species of hyena found in Southern Africa.
It is currently the rarest species of hyena.
The global population of Brown Hyena is estimated by IUCN at a number between 4,000 and 10,000 and its conservation status is marked as near threatened in the IUCN Red List.
It is fairly closely related to the smaller Striped Hyena. "

The Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) is a leopard subspecies native to Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan leopard is without doubt a star attraction for wildlife enthusiasts, both local and international. Panthera Pardus Kotiya is a subspecies of leopard that is native to Sri Lanka and is unfortunately classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The reasons for the decline in numbers include hunting for trade, fragmentation and of course habitat loss.
The Sri Lankan leopard hunts by silently stalking its prey, until it is within striking distance, when it unleashes a burst of speed to quickly pursue and pounce on its victim. The prey is usually dispatched with a single bite to the throat. Like most cats, it is pragmatic in its choice of diet, which can include small mammals, birds, and reptiles, as well as larger animals. Sri Lankan axis deer make up the majority of its diet in the dry zone.. The animal also preys on sambar, barking deer, wild boar, and monkeys.
No birth season or peak is apparent, with births occur across the year. Its lifespan ranges from 12 to 15 years in the wild, and up to 22 years in captivity.[Wikipedia]

Title by Jefferson Airplane - 1967
While taking pictures of dusky leaf monkeys at Ao Manao I was delighted when one of the monkeys ran up and gave another one a hug. It happened so quick that I only got one shot. A personal observation is that the dusky langurs are more passive and less aggressive than the long tailed macaque troop on the other end of town.
Wikipedia: The dusky leaf monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus), also known as the spectacled langur or the spectacled leaf monkey, is a species of primate in the family Cercopithecidae. It is found in Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand, and can occasionally be found in Singapore. During the day, these small, folivorous primates divide in sub-groups and forage for vegetation and fruit throughout the tropical forests.
Conservation status: Endangered

this bull was fairly close to a female White Rhino in an undisclosed area of Kruger NP, South Africa. He wanted to find out is she was receptive to mating but she was not as she still had a fairly young calf .
The Flehmen response (also called the Flehmen position, Flehmen reaction, flehming, or flehmening) is a behaviour whereby an animal curls back its upper lips exposing its front teeth, inhales with the nostrils usually closed and then often holds this position for several seconds.
It may be performed over a site or a substance of particular interest to the animal (e.g. urine or faeces) or may be performed with the neck stretched and the head held high in the air.
Flehmen is performed by a wide range of mammals including ungulates and felids.
The behaviour facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ located above the roof of the mouth via a duct which exits just behind the front teeth of the animal.
For more images of this interesting behaviour you can view the album Flehmen Response

(Back after a personal break, thank you for your patience.)
After 30 years of conservation efforts spread across most East Asian nations, the global population of the endangered Black-faced Spoonbill continues to recover.
The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS) recently announced the results of the 2024 International Black-faced Spoonbill Census, which mobilized over 200 conservation experts and volunteers worldwide spread across 11 East Asian regions and countries.
The global count recorded a total of 6,988 Black-faced Spoonbills, an increase of 355 compared to last year representing a 5.4% annual growth. This marks the third consecutive year population numbers have exceeded 6,000 individuals.
This is a remarkable turnaround for a bird that was driven to near-extinction in the 1980s, and which as recently as the 2012 census recorded only 2,693 birds globally.
The census found that Taiwan remains the largest wintering ground for Black-faced Spoonbills globally, with a recorded population of 4,135. Mainland China follows with a recorded population of 1,630 black-faced spoonbills, whereas Hong Kong’s population stood at 375 birds.
This image was captured in March 2024, just before the spoonbills depart Hong Kong and migrate back north to breed.

Morro Bay, California
Sea otters, which live in shallow coastal waters in the northern Pacific Ocean, were once abundant from Baja California across the north Pacific Rim to Japan. But, in the 1700s and 1800s, sea otters (which once numbered in the hundreds of thousands) were nearly hunted to extinction for their fur. More recently, the threat to sea otters has come from oil spills. The sea otter was formally listed as a threatened species in 1977.
Despite protection under the Marine Mammals Protection Act, the sea otter populations have not grown much in the past few years. The Marine Mammal Commission estimates that there are currently about 3,000 sea otters along the California coast.
With numbers so small, it was particularly exciting to see this mother with her infant during a recent trip to Morro Bay on California's central coast. A small "raft" of sea otters (approximately 15-20 individuals) make the bay their home, and they were easy to spot from docks as well as the shoreline.

High up in the treetops, a critically-endangered (in the wild) Yellow-crested Cockatoo flies towards its recently-excavated nest located within a dead tree trunk. Upon seeing its partner in a nearby tree, it raises its crest and seemingly smiles.
The Yellow-crested Cockatoo is critically endangered in the wild, although it is a common and popular bird in the pet trade. Numbers in the wild have declined dramatically due to illegal trapping for the cage-bird trade, with the wild population estimated at around 2,000 birds, distributed throughout wooded and cultivated areas of East Timor and Indonesia's islands of Sulawesi and the Lesser Sundas.
An introduced population of these charismatic birds can be found found in Hong Kong, most likely descended from escaped pets. Hong Kong’s feral population is estimated to be around 200, 10% of the total wild population, and their numbers appear to be increasing slowly. The birds are fully protected in Hong Kong despite being an introduced species.
