As a meteorologist I new the probability of a rainbow was high as the Spring rains started to die down and the sun was breaking through to the west. So We quickly made our way over to the Blue Mesa viewpoint and were rewarded with this stunning view. I quickly grabbed the gear and manually focused the lens. The rainbow was fading fast. So I fired 3 quick sets of bracketed shots off in rapid succession hoping one would be a keeper. This photo came out far better than I ever expected. Side note...this is really an #hdr! The Born Lakes are a chain of eleven alpine and glacial Paternoster lakes in Custer County, Idaho, United States, located in the White Cloud Wilderness. The White Clouds were given their name by early settlers because many of these skyward soaring pale peaks seem to blend together with the clouds above, making it hard to tell where mountains stop and clouds begin. The White Clouds lie near the center of Idaho, entirely within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. In the heart of the range there are over 90,000 acres of amazing terrain that became protected as The White Clouds Wilderness in 2015

The dunes received a few inches of snow this morning, but most of it melted off this afternoon. While this will only help the snowpack a little after an exceptionally dry winter, it should help green up the grass over the next few weeks. It will also firm up the sand for hiking, and improve driving conditions on the Medano Pass Primitive Road!

Kit Carson Mountain (14,170 feet/4,319m) rises dramatically above Star Dune. This complex mountain, with its numerous sub-peaks and precipitous climbing routes, was named for the famous 19th century mountain man, frontier guide, and U.S. Army commander.
Like his namesake mountain, Kit Carson was complex and multi-faceted, defying simplistic labels. From humble beginnings in Missouri, he came west on a wagon train at age 16, and ultimately commanded nearby Fort Garland just after the Civil War. Though he could not read or write, he learned six languages. Through marriages to an Arapaho woman (who passed away and left him as a single father), and later a Hispanic woman from Taos, he developed personal connections within these cultural communities. His children were half American Indian or half Hispanic, which resulted in prejudice against his family in some circles.
Kit Carson was known as a fierce fighter against tribes that attacked settlers, and sometimes that resulted in excessive force, especially earlier in his career. Yet Carson was also a brilliant and compassionate statesman who on many occasions advocated for fair treatment of tribes. At Fort Garland, he pushed back on the pressure from Washington to be more aggressive toward the Ute people. He and his family became close friends with Ute Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta, believing that treating them with respect and kindness would bring a more lasting peace here than military power alone. As a result, Utes often set up their tipis right next to Fort Garland buildings. Kit Carson's approach here was successful, ushering in a decade of peace in an otherwise volatile history.
As you gaze up at this spectacular mountain above Great Sand Dunes, take a moment to reflect on the diverse human history that is also an integral part of this amazing landscape!

The beautiful rising angles of the dunes and Sangre de Cristo Mountains are more than coincidence - they are the result of plate tectonics that have dropped the valley floor and lifted this steep, knife-ridged range over 14,000 feet (4,267m) in elevation. This resulted in a vast basin where sand accumulates and massive dunes form at the base of the mountains. The Great Sand Dunes landscape is uplifting in more ways than one!

Big Dipper Constellation over Dunes
NPS/Patrick Myers
On a moonless night at Great Sand Dunes, you can see thousands of stars, feel soft night breezes scented with piñon pine, and listen to owls hooting, frogs and toads singing, coyotes howling, forest creatures rustling, and kangaroo rats drumming on the sand.
As you experience all these with your senses, you also connect with the heritage of past peoples who experienced the same night sounds and stars, far from city lights and noise. For Navajo people, the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia constellations are Northern Male and Northern Female, circling around the North Star at the center of their home. For African American people in the 19th century, the Big Dipper was the Drinking Gourd; its stars pointed the way north to find freedom from slavery. (The Big Dipper's two stars on the outer side of the cup still point to the North Star today, as seen in this photo.) In summer 1861, the appearance of Comet Tebbutt in the Big Dipper was seen as a heavenly sign by some Civil War soldiers.
When you gaze up at these pictures in the night sky, take a moment to sense the significance of these for tribes, settlers, and soldiers in past centuries. Before there were electronic devices to distract, these stars inspired stories and songs, guided travelers, and illuminated dark nights in the wilderness.

My favorite park on this trip was Glacier National Park, but my favorite moment took place in Grand Teton National Park. As we drove out from Jackson to Yellowstone National Park, we skirted Antelope Flats and came into view of an amazing "wide shot" of the Teton range complete with a herd of bison, standing in the shadow of the peaks. Despite a slight rain falling, we scrambled out of the car and stood witness to a timeless and exhilarating scene. It had long been a dream of mine to see Bison in the wild. Seeing them in such an iconic location made the moment all the more poignant. It's a good thing it was raining because there were definitely tears of joy and awe running down my face. #FindYourPark #GoParks #NPS100 #ShareTheExperience #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkgeek #RockThePark #RTP100 @the59parks #The59Parks #usinterior #adventurevisuals #next100sca #lighttheland #experienceyouramerica #encuentratuparque #youaretheparks #americasbestidea #naturephotousa #hiking_daily #americanappeal #natparkexplorer #goexplr #GrandTetonNationalPark #grandteton #grandtetons #teton #tetons #gtnp #wyoming

The Great Sand Dunes have been a landmark for people throughout countless generations. The tallest dune rises over 750 feet (230m) - taller than the Denver skyline - marking the way for early travelers looking for mountain passes to the east. Just as the wind has gathered sand in this passageway, diverse groups of people have been drawn here. While the area's abundant wildlife and plant life physically sustained people of the past, these giant dunes have always been a treasured place for people of all ages to play, explore, recreate, and reflect.

#WildlifeWednesday - The tallest bird at Great Sand Dunes is the majestic Great Blue Heron, standing over 4 feet (121cm) tall, with a 6 foot (1.8m) wingspan. These prehistoric-looking birds are aggressive hunters, able to spear large fish or even rabbits with a swift extension of their slender neck. Despite their power, they are also caring parents, with both father and mother taking turns incubating their eggs.
Our celebration of the #YearOfTheBird continues throughout 2018!

The Pioneer Mountains are a mountain range in the Challis National Forest in Idaho, spanning Blaine, Butte and Custer counties. The southern portion of the Pioneer Mountains consists of rugged, glaciated peaks with numerous valleys, many with lakes. Regardless of their height and cool weather, these mountains have very sparse forests. Although this sometimes makes it hard to get out of the high-elevation sun, it does provide for almost constant, scenic views into the distance. The hike to Fish Pole Lake is 2.1 miles with 1,467 feet of elevation gain.

Though it's been a dry winter season so far, the mountains have been blanketed with snow a few times. At moments like the one in this photo, the reason for the historical name of this mountain range becomes apparent. At evening, sunlight shifts toward red on the color spectrum as it shines across atmospheric haze in this vast valley. Early explorers, moved by this phenomenon, gave these mountains a unique name: "Sangre de Cristo" - the Blood of Christ.
These mountains are also unique in that they rise dramatically from the desert valley floor to over 14,000 feet (4267m). Beyond being a stunning visual backdrop to the dunes, the Sangre de Cristos are an important geological barrier to form the dunefield, and a setting for multiple ecosystems with incredible biological diversity.
Great Sand Dunes National Preserve protects the portion of this range that is the dunes' snowy watershed, the source of refreshing streams that wrap around the dunefield each spring!

With dazzling colors and patterns, Wood Ducks' appearance seems to far exceed what is needed for basic survival in the wild. Because of their unusual beauty, Wood Duck feathers were highly prized in the late 19th century, almost driving this species to extinction. Fortunately, they are protected today in national parks and wildlife refuges, including Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

With a heat wave across Colorado this week, this is a great time to explore the higher elevations of Great Sand Dunes National Preserve! Along Mosca Pass Trail, tall conifers and aspens provide a shady, refreshing change from the barren dunefield. Jacob's Ladder wildflowers now blossom where thunderstorms dropped heavy rain in early June.
Beyond providing respite from intense high-elevation sun, Mosca Pass has also been a passageway for people for thousands of years. Paleo hunters, historic tribes, African-American Buffalo Soldiers, and diverse settlers have traveled this trail and utilized many of the plants here for food, medicine, and ceremonial purposes. Walking this trail is walking through history, in the footsteps of people who courageously walked through difficult conditions and circumstances - and endured.

Farmington, PA – The National Park Service invites visitors of all ages to
join in the celebration of its 100th birthday this weekend. With special
events across the country, and free admission to all 412 national parks
from August 25 through August 28, the NPS is encouraging everyone to
#FindYourPark / #EncuentraTuParque
for the centennial. On August 25, 1916,
President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created the National Park
Service “to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and
the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such
manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of
future generations.”
To make it easier for visitors to #FindYourPark entrance fees will be
waived nationwide including at the three Western PA National Park Sites
that charge an entrance fee; this includes Fort Necessity National
Battlefield, Johnstown Flood National Memorial and Allegheny Portage
Railroad National Historic Site. Flight 93 National Memorial and Friendship
Hill NHS are fee-free year round. All entrance fees are waived from August
25 through August 28 to encourage everyone to visit a nearby Park and
celebrate the NPS 100th birthday.
August 25 through August 28 – our birthday weekend – will be a nationwide
celebration of national parks, and we’re inviting everyone to the party,” said
National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. “We like to think that
we look pretty good for 100, and with so many events and activities to
commemorate this milestone, we hope all Americans will join us to celebrate
the breathtaking landscapes and inspiring history in our nation’s parks and
public lands. Whether it is in a distant state or in your own community,
there are hundreds of ways and places to find your park!”
On Thursday August 25, to celebrate the NPS Birthday with a bang, Fort
Necessity NB Rangers and volunteers will fire reproduction artillery pieces to
commemorate the 100th Birthday of the National Park Service. These
historic weapons demonstrations will take place at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m.
and 3:00 p.m. Friendship Hill NHS Rangers and volunteers will celebrate the
creation of the National Park Service by offering special NPS Centennial
themed guided tours of the Gallatin House throughout the day.
Flight 93 National Memorial Park Rangers will present the “Discovery Table”
and other special NPS Centennial programs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on
Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in the Learning Center. The Children’s
Discovery Table helps younger visitors understand the story of Flight 93
and the Memorial that honors the passengers and crew through tangible
objects. At all five Western PA National Park Service sites children are
invited to celebrate the National Park Services 100th birthday during the
upcoming weekend by participating in free special Centennial Junior Ranger
programs at each Park. Any Junior Ranger who completes all five of the
National Parks of Western Pennsylvania Junior Ranger Programs will earn a
special 2016 patch. To learn more check out Centennial Junior Ranger
Program.
On Saturday, August 27, at Johnstown Flood National Memorial there will be
a free, special program, presented at 7:00 pm in the Visitor Center
Auditorium entitled “Evening on the Lake: Judge John W. Kephart’s
Connection to the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.” Susie Huber, of the
Cambria County Historical Society, will discuss the papers of PA Supreme
Court Justice John W. Kephart. Approximately 12 years after the Johnstown
Flood of 1889, Kephart, a young lawyer was assigned to “wrap up” business
at the site of the Clubhouse and grounds of the South Fork Fishing &
Hunting Club. This presentation will include the opportunity for visitors
to view never before displayed original Club records and new evidence as to
the ownership of the cottages on grounds.
To continue the national park adventure beyond these entrance fee free
days, the $80 America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation
Lands Pass allows unlimited
entrance to more than 2,000 sites, including all national parks, throughout

Many visitors ask about the best places to access the wetland system west of the dunefield. Adjacent to the national park, San Luis Lakes State Wildlife Area protects a large portion of these wetlands, now open again after an annual closure for bird nesting season. Drive 15 minutes west of the visitor center on County Lane 6N, park at a trailhead on the north side of the large lake, then hike to smaller wetlands where many shore birds nest during summer months. Even in a dry year, these wetlands provide an oasis for wildlife and people!
