The Otago Peninsula is a long, hilly indented finger of land that forms the easternmost part of Dunedin, New Zealand. Volcanic in origin, it forms one wall of the eroded valley that now forms Otago Harbour. The peninsula lies south-east of Otago Harbour and runs parallel to the mainland for 20 km, with a maximum width of 9 km. It is joined to the mainland at the south-west end by a narrow isthmus about 1.5 km wide. The suburbs of Dunedin encroach onto the western end of the peninsula, and seven townships and communities lie along the harbourside shore. The majority of the land is sparsely populated and occupied by steep open pasture. The peninsula is home to many species of wildlife, notably seabirds, pinnipeds, and penguins, and several ecotourism businesses operate in the area. 13608

This year Ukraine celebrates May 8-9 amid Russia's full-scale military aggression, which encroaches on our independence and territorial integrity, on the very existence of Ukrainians, seeks to destroy the international security system and threaten peace throughout Europe.

In 1939-1945, the enemy was the Nazis, and today there’s a Russian version of imperial nationalism and fascism.

For Ukrainians resistance to the Russian aggression is a struggle for freedom, civilization, democracy and European values against the imperial ambitions of an aggressive neighbor who, for the sake of achieving his goal, does not neglect either war crimes or crimes against humanity.

🌺 Today remembering victims of World War II, we also pay tribute to the dead in the war that Russia unleashed in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and glorify the Ukrainian soldiers who are bravely fighting the cruel enemy.

Glory to the Heroes!

This lovely silver birch (the subject of some colour images recently) sits on the edge of a little glade allowing it to stand out from the background from a certain angle (crouched low in some brambles.....as always!). The light hitting the small twigs seemed to make it glow in infrared. The only problem is encroaching trees from either side making positioning tricky, so perhaps the clean look may not be possible with some years growth.

A while back I posted an image here of the winter sunrise... if you compare the two, you'll see an excellent example of the difference in latitude where the sun actually rises between summer and winter.

During our winter visit, it was easy to be the first people on site. During this vist, we were nowhere near the first on site and it was very crowded. At one point, a verbal altercation occured next to me as someone taking self phone photos and videos encroached upon a professional photogapher who was there before I was. The pro diffused the situation, but people can be very rude about getting in front of others. If you want the better shot, get up earlier, be there first.

For any family who might see this image, be forewarned, this was a family trip for us. If you come to visit us, we will most likely take you on a couplehour drive to see Moab and catch this magnificent sunrise.

I know a very bad photo with low resolution, but a magical moment for me, without a good camera or lens.

I want to dedicate this photo to a coyote who got caught up in traffic on a freeway bridge and leapt to his death a stones throw from where this photo was taken. And if you think coyotes don't belong in the city, please remember it is us humans who have encroached on them not vice versa.

Happy Solstice and be kind to wildlife <3

Thank-you to all who take the time to comment on ,y photos it is greatly appreciated! <3

Crashing waves and a thickening marine layer herald in another gray afternoon at Yachats along the Oregon Coast. Clusters of pink flowers set amongst a lush green carpet of grass offer colorful relief to the encroaching gloominess of the fog. Not exactly the kind of weather to fine tune your sun tan, yet it did have the advantage of thinning out the crowds. There's nothing like a solitary shore.

The little Brown Goshawks are growing up, I thought there was only two, but I spot a third little head in this shot. It won't be long and they'll be up and about.

Shot at 960mm EFL and cropped so as not to encroach on nest site.

When you've promised your family that the last picture for the day was taken, and the journey to dinner and rest for the night is underway, it's painful to see a beautiful sunset erupting from the driver seat.

My wife, sensing my pain, suggested we pull over at the next place where we might be able to see the coast and catch a few moments of the grandeur. As luck would have it, we came across Patrick's Point State Park, and the ranger at the gate was kind enough to let us through despite the close of day visitors coinciding with sunset.

We carefully but quickly drove to the nearest parking area for Wedding Rock, with little knowledge of what to expect...we did know that we were deep into golden hour and minutes away from the sun reaching the horizon. But, as most photographers know, the real light show actually occurs after the sun sets, like this, when the deeper colors of the encroaching night sky heighten the contrast with the light.

I am so grateful that my wife was with me and encourages me that sometimes it's ok to go back on my word about "the last one."

I took this photo in the middle of last month. It is one of my yellow hibiscus flowers. As Autumn was encroaching they were trying desperately to flower but the colder nights were stopping them in their tracks and this is as far as they got. Plus, the yellow colour of them was coming out more like orange. I like their shape (& colour) despite the stunted growth

Two Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus) males face off with each other on the edge of their little territory within the lek.

They will stand or sit like this until another male encroaches on another boundary of the territory.

Things really get real interesting when a female wanders aimlessly through the lek.

The native prairie where this heavier was observed was near Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Another angle of the doom and gloom that was the Lennox Head fire on new years eve 2013. The fires encroached on the small coastal village of Lennox head in NSW, Australia. Flames in excess of 20m were recorded and over 770 hectares of bushland was destroyed. Fortunately no homes or lives were lost as over 80 firefighters per shift, with support from helicopters and water planes fought the fires.

This striking butterfly known since 1699 as 'Peacock Eye' due to the defensive 'owl eye like' markings on its hindwings has a range of other tactics which it uses against predatory birds or inquisitive mice and bats encroaching on its 'settled' tree bark territory. The underside of its wings offer excellent camouflage while hibernating in tree crevices or holes. Additionally the Peacock flashes its wings open when an enemy approaches, simultaneously rubbing the forewings and hindwings together to produce a warning hiss. (Thomas and Lewington : The butterflies of Britain and Ireland). The Peacock feeds on a wide variety of flowers. This one has settled on Red Campion.

Kirkgate Lane runs between the villages of Appleton le moors and Spaunton with a branch to Lastingham in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, England.

The sun was beginning to disappear as the dark clouds encroached

The question usually is what is around the bend, well, located just to the north of the village of Appleton Le Moors on the western side of Kirkgate Lane is High Cross. All that remains is the large sandstone base and the remains of the shaft. Pastscape whose full description can be found Pastscape Monument No. 60186 surmise because of the large base the original cross may have stood some 3m high. It will have been a wayside cross marking the route to Lastingham where there has been a Christian place of worship ever since King Ethelwald of Deira founded a monastery there in 654AD.

The base is not very photogenic

A beautiful angel was once plucked from her Spring.

Her heaven lost, a new home in the frozen shore of her heart.

Memories of her beauty and life, encased in an armor of ice.

Koi or more specifically jinli or nishikigoi are colored varieties of the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi is an informal group name of the colored variants of C. rubrofuscus. Several varieties are recognized by the Japanese. Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, orange, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.

The Pacific black duck (Anas superciliosa), commonly known as the PBD, is a dabbling duck found in much of Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, and many islands in the southwestern Pacific, reaching to the Caroline Islands in the north and French Polynesia in the east. It is usually called the grey duck in New Zealand, where it is also known by its Maori name, pārera. This sociable duck is found in a variety of wetland habitats, and its nesting habits are much like those of the mallard, which is encroaching on its range in New Zealand. It feeds by upending, like other Anas ducks. The Pacific Black Duck is mainly vegetarian, feeding on seeds of aquatic plants. This diet is supplemented with small crustaceans, molluscs and aquatic insects. 27104

I love photographing these power lines, I'm not so sure if the owners of the homes in the far distance appreciate them encroaching on their tidal lagoon shoreline.

In Britain there's something called the 'June Gap'. The term pertains to the period between Spring and Summer when there are fewer wildflowers due to the encroaching new grasses and such. I don't know whether this hold for Europe as well, but wouldn't be surprised if it did. During this time insects such as Bees and Bumblebees congregate on the flowers of trees like this Ptelea trifoliata, Common Hop Tree.

Our Tree hails from North America and was introduced to England at the very end of the seventeenth century. Soon it was found in Europe as well. And its delicious aroma pervades the Hortus now.

Our Bee is a Garden Bumblebee, Bombus hortorum, probing deeply along the flower's pistil for Sweetness.

If you're interested in the historical taxonomy of Pteleas do go to a marvellous article by Virginia Long Bailey, 'Revision of the Genus Ptelea' (1962).

Our neighborhood doe stares back at me as a fire away a few frames as she and her two fawns munch away on our neighbors vegetation. Have observed this doe and her two fawns most of the summer, she and her two little ones bedding in our back yard sometimes. Co-existing with us humans and here in the west civilization continues to encroach on their habitats, they simply and wonderfully adapt. - [ ] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot @nevadacountyca @visitcalifornia

Last nights sunset brought with it the encroaching storms of Autumn. After almost four months without any discernible rain, we had some rain this morning. What a Joy!

Ice encroaches on a wetland pond under gray December skies.

Water’s maximum density is achieved at near 40 degrees F and it is less dense when warmer or cooler. For this reason, ice in water bodies forms from the surface down, rather than the bottom up, with immense consequence for aquatic life, the integrity of aquatic ecosystems, waterfowl, ice skaters, and cubes of ice in a glass.

The simple buzzy song of the Blue-winged Warbler is often heard in brushy overgrown fields and thickets in the East during the summer. Although the bird is not especially shy, it can be a challenge to observe as it forages actively in the dense brush. In recent decades this species has been expanding its range northward, encroaching on the territory of its close relative, the Golden-winged Warbler. The two species often interbreed.

Looking north west from app. 400 feet above Canary Creek Bridge. In the central portion of the image is the Great Marsh Preserve. The wetlands continue north along the length of the state as the coastal buffer along the Delaware Bay and River. To the right is the encroaching development, while on the left is one of the last farms along New Road that has not yet succumbed to the developers' dozer blade.

As mentioned in a few of my previous shared images, I did go for a long outing on Stephen's Day as one could not do that for both Christmas Eve or Day. It was coming down in bucketfuls. This is the way down to the 6th Hole Tee box of the Bunclody Golf Course and unfortunately the River Slaney decided to break her banks and encroach onto the course, including submerging the Tee box.

A Great Blue Heron encroaches on a flock of Canadian Geese who don't take too kindly to the skinny legged fisherman. After a bit of commotion the geese move on upriver and leave the Heron to his preferred spot along the rocks.

Thanks for viewing and hoping you are having a great day!

Here's my Virginia Creeper, in all its autumnal glory. It grows all over the shed at the end of my garden. Unfortunately the shed is VERY old and has gaps in the wood, so it's not only over the shed, but IN the shed ! No matter how much I cut it back, it insists on growing apace.

Can't help liking it though !

Hoping you like my picture. Best viewed LARGE, click twice on my pic 😊 !

See you all hopefully soon, my Marnie has terrible problems with her health right now, so I may not be around so much. Forgive me .....

It's a shame about the blue coach in the formation, although I was grateful the light held, with the shadows rapidly encroaching from the right side of the picture.

Yes, they are. They are wattled cranes and they are one of the most endangered of African birds. I felt very lucky on my last day on safari in the Okavango Delta. I saw birds and animals that are considered very rare sightings.

These birds rely upon a flooded plains of a river basin and Botswana has been experiencing a drought. Agriculture is also encroaching on their habitats.

Tomorrow we will move on to Chobe Park and the Chobe River. The area is just a little north of the Delta and brimming over with wildlife.

Two of the nearby towns were built above ravines which have been frequented by deer for ever. Some years ago, residents started to feed the deer in winter. The animals not being fools decided that they should explore the neighbourhoods in search of more food. They ended up eating cedar hedges between and around properties as cedars have a particular appeal. Unfortunately, the urban development has and continues to encroach on the deer's territory leaving them often not much choice but to invite themselves for dinner during times of heavy snow.

The 70 foot basalt column was exposed during the Missoula Floods, about 15,000 years ago. Lewis and Clark noted the landmark during their expedition and traded with Native Americans drying fish here.

Development is rapidly encroaching on the area and when I was there last summer, it took a long time to find an angle not full of distractions.

Dancing between earth and sky.........

A few Months ago a thick fog covered the entire area presenting the perfect photo opportunity for me and my camera.

This forlorn tree gnarled and twisted without its leaves; seemed to dance in the foreground of this shot. playing hide and seek with the encroaching fog.

After driving to Rocky Mountain House and taking the first aurora series in the farm field we noted the clouds encroaching and drove 10 miles to a new location. Brett found this stream and the ambient light was coming from an oilfield battery/station. note Brett's lighting of the fence HFF!

This was the scene at 'Sunrise' last Wednesday, from the rear of my home in Betws yn Rhos, Conwy, North Wales - poles apart from the previous weeks. Sun? What Sun?

Last February, I posted a more distant 'Misty' landscape image but, this time with far more moisture in the air, this was all that remained.

The only colour was the green of the field in the foreground and the sky's brightness - which was becoming increasingly shrouded by the swirling mist rapidly encroaching from the left. The partly covered sun's image is framed within the foreground tree's trunk and overhanging branches - left of centre.

Thought the image would look much better in Monochrome.

Forty miles south of San Francisco along California State Route One lies San Gregorio Beach. The stretch of California coastline from San Gregorio south to Santa Cruz contains some of the most spectacular coastline scenery to be found anywhere in the world--IMHO of course.

Here, where San Gregorio Creek meets the ocean, I climbed to the top of a sea cliff to witness the dynamics between the evening sun as it receded into the horizon, and the encroaching marine layer. The resulting light was perfect for a little beach photography.
