Recently rebuilt NS 4508 leads 77A off the Durham District into the siding at Patrick Henry. They will meet an eastbound here before continueing west towards Roanoke.

Heading back to Powder River Basin for another trainload of black diamonds, a Burlington Northern coal train follows the North Platte River through Wendover Canyon between Wendover and Cassa, Wyoming, on July 18, 1985. A quintet of Cascade green locomotives power the westbound train, with three EMD SD40-2s bracketing a GE C30-7 and a GE U30C.

NS 77A eases along the canal into Roanoke behind recently rebuilt NS 4516.

Empty coal bucket 633 roars up the Norfolk Southern Buffalo Line with a still fresh looking SD70ACu leading the charge.

BNSF 5991 leads the E-SLPBKM0-36B northbound towards Sedalia, CO with David Carballido-Jeans at the throttle.

One year ago today came an excellent lashup on empty hopper train 747. The first three units were the stars of an eight locomotive consist with the "sonic bonnet" DC-to-AC power NS 4000 leading the 4002 and the original Norfolk Southern heritage unit 8114. The coal empties came up the Lurgan Branch and into downtown Harrisburg, seen here passing the legendary PRR Harris Tower, before continuing west back to the mines for reloading.

On a sunny but also very windy day on the Palmer divide, BNSF 9687 leads the E-SLPBKM heading northbound up the Joint Line towards Denver, Colorado.

Good leaders and good conditions. A lot of folks might not think an absolute deluge classifies as good conditions but I like shooting in a wall of water as much as bright sun. The 80MAC was icing on the cake.

 

I got plenty wet as the empty hopper train 593 came out of Enola and headed west back to the mine through Perdix, PA.

EMD SD70ACe BNSF 9275 leads an empty coal train timetable north out of Memphis, Tennessee, as it approaches the South Lauderdale Street walkway bridge on BNSF main 2.

CSXT C40-8W No. 7880 leads it’s coal train picking up speed out of Hot Sulphur Springs, CO during a late winter afternoon on the western slope of the continental divide.

BNSF 9119 leads a coal empty heading northbound on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision hitting Crawford Hill.

BNSF 9038 heads into Memphis with a loaded RWSX coal train on BNSF main 1. It meets an empty RWSX coal, led by BNSF 6295, on main 2.

A pair of Canadian National C40-8Ms (with matching zebra stripes!) lead BNSF empty coal train E CGKBTM8 13A off the Quincy Main (Brookfield Subdivision) to the Ottumwa Subdivision via the Graham Cutoff as they depart out of rural Galesburg.

There are few wide cabs that are cooler than the SD80MAC. Rain, sleet, snow or hail I'm shooting these bad boys any time I can.

 

This version of the SD80MAC, NS 7216, rumbles through Harrisburg on the head end of coal bucket 595 in an absolute downpour.

Norfolk Southern “Reading heritage” No. 1067 leads westbound NS coal train No. 77J from the Brown Power Plant in the Lexington, Kentucky, area and is bound for a coal mine in southern Indiana. The empty train is passing L.S. Junction at 12th Street and Magnolia Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky, on August 9, 2012.

On one of the first days of summer, an empty BNSF coal train with an SD70MACe on point heads northbound up BNSF’s Angora Subdivision towards Alliance, Nebraska.

EMD SD70ACe BNSF 9098 leads an empty Miller coal train out of Memphis for a return trip to Wyoming.

In the short 2 and a half years I've been taking photos of trains I've shot 19 of the 20 Norfolk Southern heritage units leading trains. The one that eluded me the longest was NS 1072, the Illinois Terminal SD70ACe.

 

The brightest unit of the fleet is finally on my SD card, as it lead empty coal train 595 out of Harrisburg and across the Rockville Bridge in late September.

At first light with morning fog still visible, BNSF SD70ACe No. 9079 leads an empty coal heading back north for Wyoming.

An all-GE lash up on the head end of empty coal train 747 takes a pause at Front Street on the old Reading Company bridge of the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg with the three All Stars up front, NS 4000 and NS 4002, the DC-to-AC conversion units, as well as NS 8114, the original Norfolk Southern heritage unit.

A local BNSF crew picks up an empty Scherer coal (E MHSCAM 062A) from the NS (733) for its short journey out of Memphis to SoCo Yard in Marion, Arkansas. The train will eventually continue to Wyoming.

BNSF 9245 takes the lead of a northbound empty coal train passing Palmer Lake as morning fog covers the area.

Rush hour traffic on route 322 finds the evening commuters coming and going as empty coal train 633 picks up a head up steam as it heads north on the Norfolk Southern Buffalo Line at Dauphin PA.

A northbound empty UP coal train glides passed Palmer lake going downgrade heading back from the Cochise Power Plant in Arizona now going north towards the North Antelope Mine in Wyoming as UP 5870 is on point.

The DPU of an empty coal train brings up the rear as the train passes from the CN Memphis Sub onto the BNSF Thayer South Sub at CN Junction.

The Pennsylvania Railroad heritage unit leads empty coal train 507 through farmlands near MP 134 on the Pittsburgh line, which used to be the PRR mainline.

 

Couldn't ask for a nicer day to chase the 8102.

Union Pacific 8781 leads a pair of General Electrics on the empty coal train from Long Beach, California (Pier G), as the train heads back to the mine in West Elk, Colorado. A track maintenance window provided plenty of opportunity to double up on some late afternoon action, as opposed to the peppering of trains that appear throughout the day.

A 25th Anniversary Commemorative Unit brings up the rear of BNSF empty coal E-MHKATM0 as it leaves Memphis. BNSF 6078 is a GE ES44AC unit.

A westbound empty Union Pacific coal train (CHDC4-28) charges through Tolland as KCS SD70ACe No. 4059 is on point and Wabash Heritage painted Norfolk Southern No. 1070 can be seen trailing fourth out.

This train originated from Houston Deepwater port at Pasadena, TX and was heading to Skyline Mine near Provo, UT.

An empty TVA coal train is leaving Memphis on the BNSF Thayer South Sub main 2 with ES44AC engine 5806 on the lead. This train came in to town as the NS 73Z and is leaving as the BNSF E-MHKATM0.

BNSF 8890 brings up the rear of empty Scherer coal train E MHSCAM 062A leaving Memphis and bound for the Powder River Basin of Wyoming.

Once common in these parts - now a bit of a rarity!

 

GBRf liveried Class 66 No 66782 passes through Mexborough station with 4E57, the Ratcliffe PS - Immingham empty coal working.

 

The station building, that also incorporates the station master's house, is Grade II listed. Built in 1871 by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (later absorbed into the GCR).

With the freshly painted Frisco 1351 on display off the mainline in Collierville, Tennessee, BNSF 9075 leads the empty Scherer coal train NS 733 westbound through town.

A nice way to kick off the New Year...

 

I had gone out early this morning to look for a GoRail-led inbound train that had unfortunately already gotten into Decatur before I hit the road. However, I settled for a great consolation prize of an empty coal train from the Iowa Interstate in Cedar Rapids, IA bound for loading at Deer Run Mine near Hillsboro. NS 403 with the Wabash heritage unit leading departs off the Loop at Wabic as the train is bound for the Brooklyn District, looking good in the best light of the day. In the back right, CSX keeps busy scurrying around their small railyard.
