About the Steve Nash Foundation

About the Foundation

Formed in 2001, given U.S. charitable status in 2004, and Canadian charitable status in 2007, the Steve Nash Foundation is a private foundation dedicated to assisting underserved children in their health, personal development, education and enjoyment of life. Like its NBA MVP founder, the Foundation is fast becoming a leader in assists . . . to a slightly shorter population.

Through our own initiatives, and through grants to public service and nonprofit entities in British Columbia, the Foundation aims to grow health in kids by funding projects that provide direct services to children affected by poverty, illness, abuse, or neglect, and create opportunity for education, health, and empowerment. We love the opportunity to get involved in the good work being done by child-focused ngo’s in our home province.

The Foundation also seeks to afford thoughtful solutions to community needs through our own projects to address critical health and education needs. The Foundation focuses its resources on underserved populations of children in British Columbia, Arizona, and the country of Paraguay. Equipping a neonatal intensive care ward in Asuncion to provide basic necessities for infants and their families, developing an early childhood education center of excellence to bring best practices to young kids that don’t always enjoy that access in Arizona, and uniting civic outreach, corporate and social service organizations to show kids how to get involved in their communities are examples of the daily work of the Foundation’s small but dedicated staff. Stemming from our first ever Steve Nash Foundation Charity Classic, held in Toronto, Ontario, in 2005, the Foundation is also working closely with the City to establish an all-access, all-kids after-school center there to build hope through hoops for kids.

While our work focuses exclusively on child welfare, we believe that corporations must share responsibility for the well-being of our communities. The Foundation employs and encourages environmentally-friendly office practices, and offers grantees assistance in developing their own recycling and energy conservation programs (check out our Green Leaf here). We also like to highlight the important work of other individuals and organizations, using our website links to increase their exposure, and contribute to their efforts. Further, we are proud to be working with young people that excel in their chosen fields, from whom we welcome energetic leadership and fresh voices.

I took this all on my day off, I just wandered around the city looking for places to take pictures of things and stuff and wandered into some friends who were hanging out at a pub where the big booty bartender was having a birthday party. Her friends made her dress up...it was the best birthday ever.

"A man can’t plow a field by turning it over in his mind."

- old Welsh saying

~~~
"A man can’t plow a field just by thinking about it, he must go out to the field and get to work. Yet if he is fully present to the work and acts with mindfulness and loving attention — that is, if he brings his whole self along — then even as he turns over the rich soil beneath his plow, he turns it over in his mind and heart as well. The act of tilling the soil becomes an act of tilling the soul."
- from "Turning the Soil of Soul: Ritual as Celebration"
~~~

At first, I only wanted to find some small thing that represented the meaning of "devotion" in my life. Devotion gives me a sense of empowerment, a sense of connection and gratitude that keeps me going. But then I asked myself: what is it that empowers my devotion? What helps me to "do devotion better"?

Just yesterday, I finished a piece on ritual as celebration that has gone up over on the Patheos CUUPS blog, Nature's Path. In my life, learning and curiosity empower my acts of devotion. Knowledge shapes my practice as a I search and research for those threads that weave us into the world.

My Word of the Day altar is set up on the windowsill next to my desk, and there on my desk was a perfect example: Catherine Bell's Ritual: Perspectives and Dimensions. When we see the diversity available to us, we're empowered to explore beyond the simple forms that we've inherited by default.

The Empowered Woman,

she moves through the world

with a sense of confidence and grace.

Her once reckless spirit

now tempered by wisdom.

Quietly, yet firmly, she speaks

her truth without doubt

or hesitation

and the life she leads is

of her own creation.

She now understands

what it means to live and let live.

How much to ask for herself

and how much to give.

She has a strong,

yet generous heart

and the inner beauty

she emanates truly sets her apart.

Like the mythical Phoenix,

she has risen from the ashes

and soared to a new plane of existence,

unfettered by the things

that once posed

such resistance.

Her senses now heightened,

she sees everything so clearly.

She hears the wind rustling

through the trees;

beckoning her to live the dreams

she holds so dearly.

She feels the softness of her hands

and muses at the strength

that they possess.

Her needs and desires

she has learned to express.

She has tasted the bitter and savored

the sweet fruits of life,

overcome adversity and pushed past heartache and strife.

And the one thing she never understood, she now knows to be true,

it all begins and ends with you.....Sonny Carroll poem

The Abuse of Power

Quite a few years ago electricity supply was deregulated in the state of my residence. Energy deregulation means electricity competition. It used to be that there were only a few energy providers. These companies held a monopoly, as well as a lock on your pocket book. They could charge whatever they wanted and jacked up the rates during the summer, as well as in the winter, when it is needed the most. In many cases electricity producing plants used fossil fuels, and there was little or no choice about using clean energy, such as from wind farms or solar grids. Now this has all changed. With deregulation, the energy companies compete for your business. Newer companies, ones that use alternative sources to make electricity, now have the ability to offer cleaner forms of electricity. This means that you don't have to be stuck with a company that has high rates, or that uses fossil fuels in the production of electricity. Now you can pick your company, one that has the lowest rates. It also means that there are more companies available. You now have a better choice in determining where this energy comes from. You no longer have to put up with companies that change their rates every few months, customer service that is poor or non-existent, and you can stand up for cleaner, renewable electricity. For myself, it meant a lower electric bill. For a period of time i just kept the same company that had supplied me previous, as there wern't yet that many new companies around to choose from. But as the years passed more companies started making their way into the supplier marketplace. About five years ago i did an active search and found this new supplier that was offering a considerable cut in the price of electricity compared to the company i was then receiving it from. They made it easy to switch, and i did. Until about two weeks ago, i was quite naively happy with the electricity they were supplying to me. Over the time period that i was receiving electricity from them they slowly crept their price up to the point that they were higher than most other suppliers. Being occupied with many other aspects of life i never really gave it any mind. About two weeks ago they sent me a letter in the mail thanking me for being such a loyal, valued customer. Great. Thanks for thanking me! Then i read a little further on. Effective with your February 2013 bill your new electricity price will be $0.0892 per kWh, is what it said. It went on... No action is required on your part if you wish to continue your service with us. How convenient. Not really knowing what the going rate of electricity was i did some research. Turns out they were presently charging me $0.0829 per kWh. This was already higher than most other suppliers and they were raising it more. Hmmm. After some more research i found a company that was charging $0.069 per kWh. That doesn't seem like a big difference but for me it equates to about $300 a year in my pocket. So i switched. The past couple of days my home phone has been ringing off the hook. Typically i don't answer the home phone because nine times out of ten it's not somebody i care to talk to. There's no answering machine so i just let it ring. If somebody i know is going to be calling i'll answer it. In addition, my cell phone has voice mail and the number is pretty much only known by those whom i want to know it. Yesterday evening i was expecting a call from someone and when the home phone rang, i answered it. Turns out it was the company which i had just switched from for my electricity supply. The person stated that they had recieved notice that i was switching to another supplier and was wondering if i knew that. Hunnnnnh? Yes, i stated. My thinking was the next question would be, "Could you tell us why?" But it wasn't. They apparently knew why. The next statement was, "Well we are prepared to offer you $0.079 per kWh, if you stay with us. How does that sound to you?" The next sound they heard was click. You've been overcharging me for about three years, send me a letter telling me you are going to overcharge me even more. When i wake up and find another supplier you are now going to offer a lower price? Hah! Talk about the abuse of power. My electric bill runs about $1200 a year. That's $1200 that won't be going to them. Big deal right? But if ten customers switched...
