The Chiese is a 160-kilometer-long Italian river that is the main tributary and sole emissary of the sub-alpine Lake Idro and a left tributary of the Oglio.

The river rises from the Adamello in Trentino and flows through Val di Fumo and Val di Daone, forming the basins of Lake Malga Bissina and Lake Malga Boazzo. At Pieve di Bono it enters the lower Giudicarie valleys. Further south, it crosses Lake Idro before descending into Lombardy and the province of Brescia.

Like its twin Sarca, the river springs from the glaciers of the Adamello-Brenta Provincial Natural Park and its waters are intensively used for hydroelectric power generation. In the very limited area of its drainage basin upstream of Lake Idro, there are at least four artificial lakes and three hydroelectric power plants. The lower course of the river in Lombardy is also used for this purpose.

04-May-2022: this lake is the largest in Slovenija, excluding from the account the karst/intermittent lake of Cerknica (Cerkniško jezero, Notranjska, 38km2), which, at its maximum size, is over 12X larger, but, as we know, is less and less present also at minimum dimensions.

Lake Bohinj has a tributary, the Savica, while its emissary is the Sava Bohinjka, one of the two spring branches that flows into the other, the longer Sava Dolinka (Zelenci), between the towns of Lesce and Radovljica, giving life to the longest and important river of all the former Jugoslavija.

Sava ends with a vast delta in Belgrade/Beograd (Serbia), becoming a tributary of the Danube, after a 990km journey from the Julian Alps.

When I went out to take pictures of the Iris that were blooming, most were standing straight and tall, but not all that much to look at. This one, however, growing all crooked and wonky, was exactly what I was looking for!

These purple iris are my favorites with those deep rich purple tones.

The elven king received his emissary's news of him, and while everyone in the fair lands searched for the antidote, the king was more concerned about the deadly weapon that had caused such a wound. Many centuries ago, when he was very young, a dark magician had poisoned a knife that ended up killing the then elven king. All the elven peoples and some of the fairies banded together to fight him, and though it cost many lives, in the end he was defeated and buried in the misty mountains. But what very few know is that the sorcerer was buried alive, because he had taken a sip of the blood of the Holy Dragon.

19-june-2020: the Rakov Škocjan area is not in its own right, but is part of the largest system of karstsism phenomena of the Internal Karst, all linked to a single river basin that extends, surface up and down, from the permeable polje of Babno (748m a.s.l.) to the resurgences of the Ljubljanica in Vrhnika (293m a.s.l.).

It's a short but very complex set.

All karstsism, with its superficial and deep phenomena, is given by the interaction of water with the permeable calcareous soil alternating with the impermeable, mainly sedimentary one.

To describe what a watercourse can do in a predominantly calcareous environment, and in particular to describe this example, it would take much more time and many more words.

For curiosity, the "Stream of Many Names", which collects and represents ALL the surface waters (which are a minimal part of the total), of a large part of the Inner Karst (municipalities of Cerknika, Bloke and Loška Dolina), starts in the Babno Polje subsoil (748m), just to the north of Mount Snežnik (1796m), while it emerges for the first time in the contiguous Loška Dolina (574m) with 2 springs that on the impermeable soil of this basin, give life to the Obrh and Veliki Obrh streams, which last, with the waters of the first , after a couple of kilometers, it returns underground to reappear a little further west, in the vast impermeable basin of Cerknica (551m), with the name of Jezerščica, which acts as a tributary of the intermittent lake of the same name; from Cerkniško jezero the emissary is called Stržen and this too will be swallowed at the foot of a rocky wall that divides this impermeable plain from the Rakov Škocjan valley (512m), dug into the limestone of the karst plateau for tens of meters by the same waters that here they call Rak; everything is repeated when the waters of the Rak meet permeable limestone rocks and, through sinkholes, end up underground until they find an impermeable bottom and there they intersect the Pivka creek, architect of the famous Postojna Caves, which counts the contributions of these other two Internal Karst municipalities (Pivka and Postojna); everything emerges in the entrance hall of the Planina Cave and from here flows towards the periodic flood plain (446m) of the Planina little town, where, with the last name, the Unica stream writhes for 6km before disappearing into deep sinkholes on the opposite side from where it (re-)spring.

These (exclusively) Karst waters will emerge for the last time, with dozens of springs from the ground, and then remain open up to the Black Sea, where the Karst Region ends, or where the impermeable plain of Ljubljana begins, also called Barje, at about 290m average altitude above sea level.

San Juan de Ulúa, also known as Castle of San Juan de Ulúa, is a large complex of fortresses, prisons and one former palace on an island of the same name in the Gulf of Mexico overlooking the seaport of Veracruz, Mexico.

Juan de Grijalva's 1518 expedition named the island. On Easter Sunday 1519, Hernan Cortés met with Tendile and Pitalpitoque, emissaries from Moctezuma II's Aztec Empire.

San Juan de Ulúa served as a military and political symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign invasions and occupations, several of which took place during the nineteenth century. In 1836 the French invaded and occupied to put pressure on the national government; during the Mexican-American War, in 1848 the United States occupied the fort and Veracruz, and in 1863 the French briefly occupied the city when Maximilian I installed the emperor.
