I cannot help myself. I keep reading the news, and I swear, we may not survive this administration. I pulled out my emergency backpack today – the one that many Californians keep ready, pending “The Big One”, but which could come in handy in other kinds of emergencies. I wanted to see if my little hand crank radio – that has been in there for years – still works. A few cranks of the handle and sure enough, the comforting sound of old fashioned static-laced conversations came through!

I came home from my local camera club's first competition night feeling a little disgruntled at the judging and still had not taken my "photo of the day". Before going out I was checking out my emergency box and this wind up radio/torch was in it. At least something to photograph!

This is an emergency radio. I think this is a good use of the color yellow.

The friends wanted to find the emergency radio's location so the decided to look around by going on top of the bag by the door. The just didn't know that this was the radio until later. ^_^

Banks are failing, the stock market is tanking, unemployment's on the rise, sea ice is melting, people are putting lipstick on their dogs...clearly the end times are near, and a girl should never be without her emergency radio.

Day 82: Emergency Weather Radio
The face of the small emergency radio I carry with me when backpacking. It's solar and hand-crank powered with AM/FM and 7 weather band channels, plus a 3 LED flashlight. It even has a USB port to plug in a cell phone to charge the phone via the hand crank. Microlink FR 160, made by Eton.
July 14 2016 - Our Civil Defence Emergency Management team is keen to get feedback on our emergency messaging.
Have you heard the message from our Civil Defence HQ on BrianFM?
We’re trying to pinpoint exactly how much of remote Marlborough we’ve now got covered.
Under our joint arrangement with Brian FM during an emergency our team will be able to broadcast direct on Brian FM’s frequencies, not
only into Blenheim and Picton but to the Havelock area, Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds and to Seddon and the Awatere Valley.
Let us know if you’ve heard the test messages. We’re giving away a civil defence pack to the most remotely located listener.
Please take a moment to contact Council and tell us where you’re picking up this radio station: Phone
03 520 7400, email MDC@marlborough.govt.nz or via Twitter @MarlEmergency.
