… this underground CP is located at the end of RAF Hornchurch’s main runway, on the Rainham side. Its entrance is now apparently filled in. Given its small size, it must have felt pretty cramped in it during emergencies such as air attacks.

The film had been playing for twenty minutes.
Pippa had watched approximately four minutes of it.
Debbie had watched none.
“Pippa.”
“What?”
“You’ve got popcorn in your hair.”
Pippa froze.
“How?”
“You threw it at me.”
“That doesn’t explain how it got in my hair.”
“You missed.”
Pippa looked offended.
“I did not miss.”
“There’s popcorn on the car behind us.”
Pippa glanced over her shoulder.
“That could have been anyone.”
Debbie started laughing.
“Pippa, you’re the only person here throwing food.”
“I wasn’t throwing food. I was making a point.”
“What point?”
“I’ve forgotten.”
On the screen, the leading man kissed the leading lady.
The entire drive-in went quiet.
Pippa leaned toward Debbie.
“He’s going to leave her.”
Debbie stared at her.
“You’ve seen four minutes of this film.”
“I understand men.”
“You thought the mechanic on Route 66 was flirting with you.”
“He checked my oil.”
“He was doing his job.”
“He smiled.”
“You paid him.”
Pippa reached for the popcorn.
The box was empty.
She looked inside.
Then looked at Debbie.
“Where’s the popcorn?”
Debbie stopped laughing.
“You ate it.”
“I did not.”
“You’ve been eating it for twenty minutes.”
“I was distracted.”
“By what?”
Pippa pointed at the screen.
“The film.”
Debbie stared at her.
“You haven’t watched the film.”
“Exactly. Very distracting.”
Pippa started the car.
Debbie grabbed the dashboard.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting more popcorn.”
“The concession stand is twenty feet away.”
“I’m not walking.”
“You cannot drive through the concession stand!”
Pippa stopped.
There was a moment of silence.
“Fine.”
She turned off the engine.
Debbie relaxed.
Then Pippa picked up Debbie’s Coke.
“Don’t.”
“I’m thirsty.”
“That’s mine.”
Pippa took a sip.
Debbie slowly reached for the car keys.
“What are you doing?”
“Driving home.”
“But the film isn’t finished.”
Debbie looked at the untouched screen.
“Neither are you, apparently.”
And that was the night Pippa and Debbie went to the drive-in, missed the entire film, ran out of popcorn, argued over a bottle of Coke...
…and somehow still gave the movie five stars.

Little leather pouch, just big enough for 2 or 3 coins. For certain occasions I would wear it like a pendant (long ago now) to have some emergency money on me.
I did not clean it, maybe I should have. The coins still inside were discoloured blue for some reason. Go figure...
