Colour-enhanced scanning electron micrograph of an early human embryo. This stage occurs at about 2-3 days after fertilisation. The zona pellucida has been removed to aid visualisation. Each cell is approximately 33 microns in diameter.

Abstract: Precariously perched, a tiny fragment of fossilised skin from an 80 million year old embryonic dinosaur is. An x-ray micro-tomography unit at the Henry Moseley X-Ray Imaging Facility is set to unlock the innermost secrets of this remarkably preserved fossil. University of Manchester palaeontologist, Dr. Phil Manning, nervously watches as the optics carefully align their sights upon a rather unusual sample. Achieving resolutions of 1-2 micrometers, the tiny fossil gives-up some of its prehistoric secrets. The resulting x-rays are more than just skin-deep. They reveal internal structures of unhatched dinosaur skin never seen before. Image taken with a Canon 5D mkII, F4 at 1/20 sec on self-timer.
