To enter the realm of the Heart and Embryo nebulae in the eastern corner of Cassiopeia is not a simple task for a visual traveler. The complexity of nebulosity can only be seen by using CCD-cameras that collect light over an extended period. Both the Heart Nebula and the Embryo Nebula have given birth to young bright stars that overshadow the faint nebula when seen visually through the telescope.

The Embryo Nebula (also known as the Soul Nebula) and its accompanied three Open Clusters (Collinder 32, 33 & 34) are lumped together under the designation IC 1848. I have circled the three Open Clusters in the drawing as they are delineated in most modern star atlases. However, their history is contorted and there is much disagreement as to their true sizes or locations. The best source for the history of argument on these clusters can be found in Archinal & Hynes’ STAR CLUSTERS pages 134 and 135. However, be forewarned that the placement of the clusters in this classic book on star clusters does not agree with the more accepted arrangement that I have drawn.

I found the Embryo Nebula a bit easier to find in my 155mm refractor from my backyard than the nearby Heart Nebula. Unlike the Heart Nebula, which responded only to the UHC nebula filter, the Embryo Nebula also responded, in part, to a Hydrogen-beta nebula filter. Still the Embryo Nebula will not jump out at you, so a little time and patience will likely be required.

I have no idea what these are, but I'm guessing they are Wood Frog embryos.

A pancake costume under construction. The butter pat is a painted small pizza box. The pancakes are cut from 1/2" styrofoam insulation, to overflow an 18" serving platter. A little paint, a little glue, a little tasty epoxy syrup... they'll be good enough to eat.

Marianne (Dimormar) photographing the Giant inflatable Embryo at Art XXXL at the submarine wharf, Rotterdam.

We laugh, we cry,

We live, we die,

and when we're gone, the world goes on.

We love, we hate, we learn too late,

How small we are, how little we know.

We hear, we touch, we talk too much,

of things we have no knowledge of.

We see, we feel,

yet can't conceal,

How small we are, how little we know.

See how the time moves swiftly by,

We don't know how, we don't know why.

We reach so high, and fall so low,

The more we learn, the less we know.

Too soon the time to go will come,

Too late the will to carry on,

And so we leave too much undone,

How small we are how little we know.

Bernadette Ferreria - Sacred Heart of Jesus Pro-Life group, holds a representation of a 12 week old embryo in the palm of her hand.

The group is notorious for protesting outside family planning clinics and centres which facilitate abortion travel from Northern Ireland, whilst displaying graphic images of aborted embryos. (background Blurred)

The group's approach can be quite confrontational towards people attending such clinics.

Bernie claims that many clinic users are not being told the full story with regards to the trauma and hurt that they can expect after having an abortion. She claims that aborting even unwanted pregnancies conceived as the result of abuse or attack, just creates another victim.

Some centre users have claimed that they are being further traumatized as the result of this type of protest, and say that they should have the right to choose without interference.

As I spoke with Bernadette and two members of Pro-Life from Ballymena, a lady with a local accent approached and thanked them for the work that they were doing.

She stated that a year ago they'd taken a young girl to the Derry/Londonderry clinic, where a protest was being staged, to arrange for an abortion in England.

The lady, who did not wish to have her name or picture recorded, said that at the time they were disgusted by the protest, but now a year later, as the result, there was a year old baby and a young mother with no regrets, after having reconsidered her decision.

I'm not sure whether or not it was coincidental that this approach was made as I was standing, quite visibly, with a camera.

I tend to inhabit the middle ground on occassion.

Ironically this protest was taking place as police were investigating the murder of 38 year old Jim McConnell a few short miles away at Prehen (Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland) on Wednesday 11th February 2009.

This is the same wildtype embryo photographed on April 29th in this photo set. Pigment cells have developed in great numbers and have migrated all over the body. Compare to the sibling leucistic embryo from today.

A recent scientific breakthrough in pre implantation genetic diagnosis gives many couples new hope. Next generation sequencing is a game changer for couples who turn to IVF. This new technology sorts through genetic information and mutations, improving doctors' ability to detect abnormalities and identify embryos with the highest chances of producing a viable pregnancy.

This is a leucistic - note the virtual absence of migrating chromatophores off the neural crest in comparison to the other embryo from this date. The gills are developing well and the eyes are starting to form.

Warm glow, moon gloom

always need a little more room

waiting here seems like years

never seen the light of day

All around I hear strange sounds

come gurgling in my ear

red glow light and darkened night

I feel my dawn is near

Warm glow, moon gloom

always need a little more room

whisper low, here I go

I will see the sunshine show

The embryo itself is about 1 mm in length. This is probably a longitudinal or near-longitudinal section.

Embryo dunes. There is very little fresh water for plants and the sand is extremely porous. Plants are blasted by blown sand. Further problems for the plants are caused by salt spray and shifting sands. Sea couch grass, which can extract fresh water from salt water, is one of the few species found here.

This represents about the half way point in this turtle's development. It along with its many future hatch mates (two clutches, totaling 103 eggs) will be released where their mothers reside. Collected in Hollis, NH
