A successful 260 mile round trip to Blackpool made in the Sierra, ticking over 52,000 miles in the process.
My trusty Sierra, out on a day's visit to London. A few hair raising moments navigating the Capital's busy streets but much enjoyed.
Photographed in grand surroundings!
A photograph of my Sierra from recent history - after crossing paths online with someone who knew the previous (enthusiast) owner.
The Sierra as original to how the family kept the car for all those years. Original Europcar plates front and back, a rather scabby arch and only one rear seatbelt.
The owner of the car at the time later had this arch repaired and repainted. As for the (then none existent) driver side rear seatbelt, that was the result of a stubborn MoT tester refusing to pass it with only one.
SeanRG's car, seen in my hometown of Blackpool, very local to me indeed, as I live in one of those flats across the road (building with the white window frames). I can see the car parked here from my lounge window.
I was very surprised to see it here this afternoon.
The Sierra, pampered and polished for the summer shows. The MoT is due soon though and the garage are busy replacing the cambelt on Sierra #2 right now!
A year in review.
Betsy, as we now know here to be called, has had an easy year. She's covered under a thousand miles since July. Lovely as always, she's happiest pottering to the shops and back once a week.
The year's high point: The Sierra made a TV appearance a couple of months ago.
Photographed here, after being caught out by sudden heavy snow from earlier this year.
As usual, she's SORN'd for the winter.
The beige Sierra is nearing completion of MoT prep. Remaining things on my list are:
- Attach interior floor plastic skirting
- Source a 13" spare wheel (proving difficult)!
- Sort the aerial, it fell into the rear quarter when slamming the boot
- Pump up a tyre
- Renew oil and coolant
In two weeks I'd have owned this car for two years, amazing. I hope to have it MoT'd in March, though the possibility of needing to buy a new commuter car may delay plans.
The Sierra gets a rude awakening - to the tip!
I’ve swapped around my cars and the Getz is replacing the Mercedes for now - as daily driver. Whilst the Getz is in for steering repairs, the Sierra will provide temporary service.
The Sierra performed very well today.

It was refreshing to spot this standard, low spec Sierra, seeing as most Sierras I come across nowadays have naff modifications or are Cosworth replicas. This example looks to have been parked up for a while, with its MOT expiring a couple of months ago, however, it is still taxed till September, so it may see the road again in the near future.

Responding to a photograph-less advert for a £500 Ford Sierra brought me here.
The current long term owner is rather unsure what to do with his car. Having provided him with 100,000 reliable miles it's now producing increasingly expensive MoT bills each year and he's also bowing to pressures from his family to get rid. He'd like to keep hold of it through Xmas and the New Year and is determined to keep it out the scrapyard.
A grainy image lifted from the Chiltern Hills Vintage Vehicle Rally Facebook page - unfortunately they do not keep a higher quality version.
Photographed from up high, I've no idea where exactly, here goes the Sierra entering the show having been treated to a full machine polish that morning.

'Automotive twins' as two examples of the same car. Two different trim levels offering equally exciting benefits of:
Emax L
✓ Economic fuel consumption
✓ A comfortable ride
✓ Luxury in the form of a rear wiper
XR4i
✓ A hear-it-coming V6 rumble
✓ Savage performance
✓ Nigh on instant stopping distance
Actually, they're not really the same car at all here.
Despite appearances this has been on the road as recent as 2012. It seems to have deteriorated quite quickly in that time, although I don't think it was in the best of condition when it was still on the road. I'd imagine the owner has had quite a few people pestering them to buy the car, because these have risen in value in recent years. Going by those rear wheel arches, it will take quite a lot of welding to get it roadworthy again, and who knows what mechanical gremlins are hiding under the bonnet, making it seem more unlikely that it'll ever return to the road again, although you never know!

Oh no, we've become those types that gather in fast food restaurant car parks!
By chance, the owner of the green Sierra works only a short drive from where the beige Sierra is kept so a quick meet was arranged.
1983 Ford Sierra 1.6 L (Beige):
Believed to have started life as a CID Car for Leeds Met. Police, the car went on to eventually become a banger being stolen and clocked during its life. Bar the day of collection, that day's 8 mile round trip is the longest journey the Sierra has undertaken in my ownership since February.
1982 Ford Sierra 1.6 L (Green):
The oldest known surviving Sierra, this example was registered 20th October 1982 - 5 days after sales began. The car has been 'Limited Edition'd to death with plenty of interesting period add ons. This Sierra served as a stand-in for the Sierra Base which ended up requiring some last minute mechanical attention - they share the same owner.
1986 Ford Sierra 1.6 Emax L (Red):
An ex-rental from the Europcar fleet, serving at the Watford branch. This Sierra went into long term ownership as a nearly new family car, staying with the family for over two decades and averaging only 150 miles per year. By the end of summer I hope to have the Emax in storage to preserve its condition.
The Sierra pops to the shops. Designed in an era of pay and display, not the CCTV and number plate recognition cameras deemed necessary today.
None Serck friendly.
Successfully delivered from Central London to a friend's in Birmingham - that was an experience..
This one started life as a hire car, before falling into elderly ownership, then the president of the Glamorgan Classic Car Club, then a minor car collector.
Ever so nearly mint condition
The slightest of trademark Sierra crust
Two minor scratches
And the clock doesn't work.
Starts first time
Drives a treat
46,000 miles.

Back to the eighties in a Coventry supermarket.
A 'Tiffany Edition' no less! (Cassette tape in every glovebox I wonder!) Plenty of nicks on this one, but they only appear close-up. It made a good chunter on start-up, once the Moss alarm was deactivated.
