The Chairperson, .

University Grants Commission, .

.

New Delhi. .

Sir, 011 behalf of the entire student community of JNU, we congratulate you for being appointed the .

Chairperson of UGC. We believe that through your good office you will enrich the University education in our co-.mtry and solve the manifold problems afflicting this crucial sector which is of paramount importance for the country's development. We, on behalf of theJNU student community, would like to place the following demands pertaining to umversity education in general and our university in particular. rrovlde 1-inancial Assistance to All Needy Students to Strengthen Research-l'"One of the major problems facing the education sector in our country is an acute shortage of hinds for higher and university educatwn. Over the last fifteen years, the higher education sector has been systematically privatized and commercialized with the government retreating from this sector and imposing fund cuts on it. As a res.ult of this, the higher education sector fus been starved of funds for infrastructural development or for providing scholarships and fmancial assistance for students. This has resulted in a situation in which the research quality in our universities has been adversely affected with the students unable to complete their research due to lack of assistance from the governments. Research in third world countries like India, as you would agree, is ofprime importance for developing intellectual self-reliance. The absence of proper financial assistance for students pursuing research is harming the intellectual self-reliance of vur country. In order to strengthen our inteliectual self-reliance, the researchers and students must be provided with financial assistance to complete their academics. Therefore, we would appeal to you to provide financwl as~istancc to all t·es arch students in the universities of the country so that they can pursue their academics and .

research in a pt·oper manner. .

in our umversity also, over the last few years we have witnessed that a large number of students arc unable co complete their academics due to financial problen'ls.Even those who are pursuing their studies are also forced to ul t· up somepan-time or full-time jobs to sustain themselves within the university. In order to assess the extent and nature of the problem faced by the students, the JNUSU can-ied out a detailed survey within the tudcnt corrununity, the result of which is attached herewith. The survey report amply mal es it clea1· that a large se:tion of the students in this university (59% of the students in the sample) are facing manifold fin ..mcial problems to punue t h,~ i ,-academics -with a rnajority of the students unable to pay their mess bills and other ft?es. While there are M CM .

schola,·ships fot· BA/MA/MPhil students, the amount of the MCM is only a meager RS 600 -which is inadequate t .

vcn pay the n1ess bill of the students. On the other hand no financial assistance is provided to PhD st-udents in our university. The students 1·esponding to the survey have demanded an amount of Rs 1500-2000 as fin ancial assistance t.o sustain themselves in the university. .

ln. lieu of the t·esult of the survey, in order to provide imtnediate rei ief to the COITlrnon students in out· university we demand the following: .

.

The am.ount of MCM should be increased to Rs 1500, so that the students can cover their n"'less bill as well as tneet their other expenses at lea t to an extent. The MCM scholarships should also be extended to PhD students. .

.

.

If we categorize the students according to monthly family income, then the students falling in the group Rs 1000-6000 and Rs 6000-12000 are the neediest. Right now in our university only those students whose family income is below Rs 75000 per annum are eligible for MCM. We believe that the income cap for MCM needs to be raised toRs 1,00,000 per annum, which is also the lower limit for income tax, to meet the needs of the students. .

.

.

A sizeable section of the students in the survey have also elucidated that they are facing financial problems even though their family income is above Rs 1,00,000. In order to ensure financial assistance for these students, the number of posts for Earn-As-You-Learn Scheme must be incre:lsed from 150 to 300 with special preference for SC/ST students. .

Reclaiming Platform Futures explores the pervasive influence of digital platforms on urban landscapes, particularly focusing on the case study of Bangalore, India. In the last decade, cities worldwide have been increasingly reshaped by digital platforms such as Uber Eats, Instacart and AirBnb. Platform Urbanism, which is a key framework for my thesis, is a field of research which investigates the ways in which digital platforms play a central role in the governance and spatial configurations of cities. This project explores the various, multiscalar impacts and technological disruptions of platform urbanism by exploring and expanding ways in which app-based convenience has resulted in changes in the ways cities operate and propose alternative futures for platform governance.

Digital platforms such as Swiggy and Zomato operate at multiple registers, interfacing with various facets of urban life and social structures. At the forefront, these platforms serve as intermediaries between consumers and service providers, facilitating transactions within the online food economy. At this operational level, they mediate the exchange of goods and services, employing algorithms and user ratings to optimize efficiency and customer satisfaction. Simultaneously, these platforms also embed themselves within the socio-cultural fabric of cities through shifting cultural perceptions around consumption and in turn, are influenced by prevailing social norms and practices. By employing data scraping techniques and fieldwork, the project elucidates the intricate relationships between platforms, data, and labor. It sheds light on the exploitation of gig workers and the spatial reconfigurations induced by dark architectures, such as micro-warehouses and cloud kitchens. Moreover, it exposes the ecological and social ramifications of the “city on demand” model, including excessive food waste and community displacement.

Proposing a transformative vision for platform governance, the project advocates for worker-owned platform cooperatives and decentralized food networks. It envisions a future where platforms serve the needs of local communities while fostering equitable access and sustainability. Through spatial interventions and community engagement, the project endeavors to reclaim agency in the face of platform monopolies and forge pathways towards a more inclusive and liberated urban future.

Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other

high.org/exhibition/sonya-clark/

For thirty years, multidisciplinary artist Sonya Clark has focused her work on the African diaspora in the United States to confront, elucidate, and reframe its history. Within her practice, she often undertakes this exploration through everyday fiber materials—most notably hair, flags, found fabric—and craft practices. In her work, craft and community are intertwined; her participatory projects promote new collective encounters across racial, gender, and socioeconomic divisions. Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other is a major traveling exhibition focused on the artist’s community-centric and participatory projects.

Through her work, Clark asks us to acknowledge our individual responsibility to the collective whole and to consider such questions as, “How do we address and challenge our shared colonial past, and how do we hold ourselves accountable for and claim agency in what happens next in the future of our society?” We Are Each Other is both a declaration and an invitation, a battle cry and an embrace.*

“I was born in Washington DC to a psychiatrist from Trinidad and a nurse from Jamaica. I gained an appreciation for craft and the value of the handmade from my maternal grandmother who was a professional tailor. Many of my family members taught me the value of a well-told story and so it is that I value the stories held in objects.”

The tiny little amoeba, small insects and worms, millions of them, which we don’t know are fundamental to our lives and when we die, we become food for them.
