At 11:31 am on Saturday, October 24, 2020, SpaceX successfully launched the Starlink-14 mission. This is the 15th batch of Starlink satellites, adding 60 more satellites to the communications network.
This was the view from Cocoa Beach, Florida, seen in a composite of two 30-second exposures.

Zuma by SpaceX on film (!)
This is the #SpaceX #Zuma launch (and landing!) captured using on Fuji Velvia 50 transparency film. Picture taken January 7, 2018, scanned on January 13, 2018.
Yes, actual film; which is why I'm posting it nearly a week after the launch (I sent it to CA for processing.) I haven't touched film in over 20 years and didn't know how it would work out, but I'm quite pleased with the results.
I went with the Velvia 50 because it had the lowest ISO I could find, and I shot at f18, but in retrospect, I think I could have opened things up a bit more. Also, I wish I had more foreground, but I didn't know how the 24mm lens was going to handle the height of the first landing burn, so I'm pointed higher than I needed to be. (The film did capture the 1-3-1 engine burn nicely.) One fun detail: the white spot to the left of the launch streak is the North Star. (When I first saw it in my vertical DSLR shot, I thought was a stuck pixel.)
I used a Canon A1 for this shot, the same camera Wayne A. Seeley (aka my dad) purchased
40 (or so) years ago. I'm happy to report that it is now part of my arsenal and it will be deployed for future launch attempts.

SpaceX lit up the Florida skies this morning with the latest batch of Starlink 4-17 satellites at 5:42 a.m. EDT, from LC-39A on NASA's Kennedy Space Center. When the rocket exhaust is illuminated by the sun, it starts to look like a space jellyfish.
Kennedy Space Center, FL. – At 5:56 pm (ET), January 15, 2023, SpaceX launched its Falcon Heavy and a top-secret mission titled USSF-67 at Launch Complex 39-A. The mission was for the National Security Space Launch (NSSL) and SpaceX's second launch using the Falcon 9 Heavy for the NSSL. This was the fifth launch of a Falcon 9 Heavy by SpaceX and the second in less than three months. On board were two payloads for NSSL, one being a military communications satellite. The side boosters for this mission supported USSF-44 which launched on November 1, 2022. While the center booster core was deemed expendable, the side boosters successfully landed shortly after launch at LZ-1 and LZ-2. In a statement from Assured Access to Space: "We had another fantastic launch today on a Falcon Heavy, just two months after our first National Security Space Launch mission using this launch system, and while the launch itself was impressive, I am most proud of the fact that we placed important capabilities into space that help our nation stay ahead of very real and growing threats," said Maj. Gen. Stephen Purdy, program executive officer for Assured Access to Space. "We're certainly on a roll with 96 consecutive successful national security space launches, and the takeaway is that we've really got a spectacular team working together on our most challenging launch profiles to ensure our mission partners get on orbit with confidence." Later this week, SpaceX has two additional launches scheduled, the GPS-III-6 from Cape Canaveral SFS and Starlink Group 2-4 from Vandenberg S.F.S. in California.

With lightning far offshore of Cape Canaveral, it was a beautiful morning launch for the SpaceX Falcon9 with the crewdragon DM-1, heading to the ISS. Launch occurred at 2:49 a.m. EST from LC-39A on the Kennedy Space Center
The SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, with NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley inside, is seen aboard SpaceX's GO Navigator recovery ship shortly after splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, on Aug. 2, 2020. Behnken and Hurley spent 62 days aboard the International Space Station for NASA's SpaceX Demo-2 mission, becoming the first astronauts to launch to the orbiting laboratory from U.S. soil since the end of the shuttle program in 2011. The final flight test for SpaceX, Demo-2 will pave the way for the agency to certify the company's transportation system for regular, crewed flights to the orbiting laboratory. Hands Off! Protest in Vero Beach, Florida on April 5, 2025. A large crowd of over 2000 showed up to protest Trump and Elon Musk policies and the havoc caused by DOGE. This was one of 1200 locations where people raised their voices across the nation with more than 5 million participating. Resist!

StarLink satellites in motion. Eventually, they will all take positions at programmed coordinates. The appeared out of nowhere and very suddenly, and obviously, you cannot autofocus on a subject like this against a dark sky.
So all I could do was manually set the focusing ring on the lens manually to "infinity" and hope the lens would pick up these spots of light. The Sony 50 f/1.2 can focus beyond ∞, so I ended up overshooting ∞ a little. The camera also set the exposure time to 0.5 seconds, which was a bit too long. As a result, I could not get the best focus.
By the time I set the shutter to a faster speed and get better focus, a big patch of cloud moved in, and that ended any hopes for getting a better shot :(
Still, an interesting image, and I thought I would upload it to flickr.

"Ode to the Dew"
So many incredibly talented photographers were harassed (or in cases, hobbled) by the dew at the pad for the DM1 launch. My results were varied: despite all three cameras I set at the pad having dew heaters (thank you, Jared Haworth), only one was dew-free. The wettest (by far -- the next morning, water dripped out of the enclosure when I opened it) was my oldest rig. It was the exact setup I used for the Nusantara Satu pad streak, but the murky conditions Saturday morning were too much for the dew heater to deal with. The ND filter must have been a very welcome surface for the dew.
When I sat down last night to mourn, I noticed the shot just before the swampy streak was from Friday afternoon, the same framing, nicely exposed and, no dew.
So, with the full recognition (and a moment of apology) that this image has a post-apocalyptic look to it that will give photo purists fits, may I present an attempt to both recover something usable. This is a composite of the 25-second swamp streak and a test shot captured Friday afternoon, combined in Photoshop using the "multiply" mode.
My sympathies to everyone who ended up fogged out and, kudos to everyone who got clean captures -- there were certainly many amazing images captured of this amazing launch.

I haven’t done a Tiny-Earth image in 2 years or so. I know some of you have missed them more than others...
This is from my pad camera placed in the high grass at LC-40 for the Monday morning SpaceX Starlink launch.
Keen-eyed viewers will see the somewhat famous Starlink mourning dove, flying away from the fury, and it’s to that bird I dedicate this image.
More importantly, I give great thanks to Scott Schilke and Mike Howard for retrieving and handling my cameras after launch.

Don't take my Ektachrome away.
One of the four cameras I fielded for the #STP2 #FalconHeavy launch by #SpaceX was a 35mm film camera. After this launch, I sat on this roll of film for about 10-days before sending it to The Darkroom for processing and scanning. Initially, I forgot about the roll, and then when I remembered, I thought I hadn't gotten anything usable. I put the hand-warmer on the lens later than I thought I should have, and I recollected that all my gear was covered in dew at the time of launch, so I thought this frame would be a foggy mess.
When I received this scan via email, I was delighted.
Although this shot is very similar to the great shots taken by John Kraus and John Pisani, the novelty here is that this is a 20-ish minute long exposure captured on newly re-released Kodak Ektachrome 100 transparency film. The curved streak is the fully assembled Falcon Heavy rocket; the two streaks above the launch streak are from the side boosters returning to the Cape, then the two streaks in the center of the shot are the boosters descending safely (and loudly, sonic booms and all) to LZ1 and LZ2.
The location we were shooting from is quite remarkable and historic: Pad 9 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where tests of the Navaho missile took place. You can see a small portion of the launch structure leaning into the left part of the frame - this is where I ran to after the Falcon Heavy was off the pad to be in position for landing.
In the foreground and to the right is historic LC31/32, built to launch Minuteman and Pershing missiles. The beehive-shaped structure is one of two blockhouses, and the starburst of light to the left of the beehive is from the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse.
Of particular note, about 1,200 feet from the beehive in this frame (right) is the LC31 silo, where recovered debris from Space Shuttle Challenger is stored.
Big thanks to the 45th Space Wing for allowing us to shoot from this incredible location, it was a memorable (and rather late; the launch was at 2:30 am) night.
Details:
20-minute exposure at f22 taken with Kodak Ektachrome 100 transparency film in a Canon Elan 7 camera with a Rokinon 12mm fish-eye lens. The launch and landing only took 8-ish minutes, but I opened the exposure about 10-minutes before launch.

Thoughts on April 10th
youtu.be/3y-kGHO4GPo?si=V3UDiIkdXsuR5j_f
1. Trump's mutual tariff warhead explodes 😅
Everyone chose it, right? There's nothing we can do about it 😅
2. Elon Musk and Steve Jobs are completely different 😃
Self-driving is just around the corner! It's been a few years since he declared that. Tesla, which is still not yet achieved, and Jobs, who announced it after completely perfecting the iPhone, are completely different.
3. Toyota's new Crown is the crystallization of an artist's spirit that is not afraid of change.
The mindset seen in an SUV that has changed dramatically from the conventional sedan.
4. The collapse of capitalism and the equality brought about by the Internet.
The pursuit of rare earths and the destruction of music and movies by subscription services are bringing changes to capitalism itself.
(We're in the middle of this, so we're arguing a lot 😅)
5. How to raise children and thoughts about children who have grown up
Never nag them. Don't make them shrink. Do everything voluntarily.
Be aware of how to manage your money yourself.
6. Just like the change from Biden to Trump, personnel decisions are not related to ability. 😅
However, I will receive something in return for the effort I put into myself, and contribute that to the future. 😃
It's the same as previous photographers in Japan. I'm just giving up my seat to acquaintances. 😃
7. I don't mind dying when my child graduates from college. 😅 Of course, I'll quit my job right away. 😃 I want to go to New York for a bit. 😃
That's all I said while driving.
If you have a lot of free time, please feel free to read it. 😃

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?
I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.
Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.
Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.
With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.
This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.
Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.
In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.
What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.
The true creator was Jonathan Ive.
A minority of people may share this perspective with me.
However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.
The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.
Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.
It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.
I have always loved music.
Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.
It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.
And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.
(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)
Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.
It was those artists who moved me to my core.
The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.
Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.
In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.
Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.
Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.
I have written at length, but here is the key article:
**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**
🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)
At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.
While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.
Apple refused to bow to Trump.
If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:
**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**
Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.
A company that does not pander to Trump—
That is Apple. :)

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.
youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp
We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.
On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.
Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.
If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.
The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.
My wife is showing us the hotel room.
But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.
When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.
Please take a look if you'd like.
This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.
I'll post the link below.

From now on I will host "Lot No.402_".
The work of Leonardo da Vinci who was sleeping.
That is the number when it was put up for auction.
No sign was written on the work.
So this work couldn't conclude that it was his work.
However # as a result of various appraisals # it was exposed to the sun.
A work that no one notices. A work that speaks quietly without a title.
I will continue to strive to provide it to many people in various ways.

Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.
Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.
To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.
During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:
*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*
Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Main story
There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.
One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.
The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine
quietly.
Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.
I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.
That is the meaning of a rebirth.
I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.
After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After
she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies
until I realized it is love?
I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the
daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.
I had been thinking about such a thing.
However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see
something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

5
What is the coolest thing? The photo is as it is.
6
About the current YouTube bar. I also want to tell # I want to leave.
7
About Japanese photographers. Japanese YouTube bar is Pistols.
8
The composition of the photograph is sensibility. Meet the designers in Milan. Two questions.
9
What is a good composition? What is a bad composition?
10
What is the time to point the camera? It is slow if you are looking into the viewfinder or display.
11
Family photos. I can not take pictures with others. The inside of the subject.
12
About YouTube 's photographer. Camera technology etc. Sensibility is polished by reading books.
13
About the Japanese newspaper. A picture of a good newspaper is Reuters. If you continue to look at useless photographs # it will be useless.

About work production 2/2
1 Photo exhibition up to that point. Did you want to go?
2 Well # what is an exhibition that you want to visit even if you go there?
3 Challenge to exhibit one work every month before opening a solo exhibition at the Harajuku Design Festa.
4 works are materials and silhouettes. Similar to fashion.
5 Who is your favorite artist? What is it? Make it clear.
6 Creating a collage is exactly the same as taking photos. As I wrote in the interview # it is the same as writing a novel.
7 I want to show it to someone # but I do not make a piece to show it. Aim for the work you want to decorate your own room as in the photo.
8 What is copycat? Nowadays # it is suspected to be beaten. There is something called Mimesis?

I went to Milan in 2005.
At that time # I went from Milan to Venice.
We took Eurostar into the transportation.
This photo was not taken from a very fast Eurostar.
When I changed the track # I took a picture at the moment I slowed down.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...
gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

Trump Control Program: No "buts," MCP. That's for users. Now you're the best program that's ever been written. You're dogged and relentless, remember?
Musk Control Program: Let me at 'em.
Trump Control Program: That's the spirit. Now keep that Cybertank rolling. I'll try to cover you from this end. Go.
Musk Control Program: [Sips Java.] Do you think we can access this Treasury Control Program, DOGE Bits?
DOGE Bits: Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Musk Control Program: Now TCP is saying to look over in here, but I don't see what we're looking for.
Trump Control Program: Come on, you scuzzy money, be in there. Come on.
[An epic Space Paranoids battle begins; cue music by Wendy Carlos.]
Musk Control Program: Uh-oh. We've got company.
Trump Control Program: I don't believe this.
Musk Control Program: A Journalist.
DOGE Bits: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!
[Pew, pew, pew...]
Musk Control Program: There's too many of them!
Trump Control Program: What is this?... [Musk Control Program screams like a little girl on not enough ketamine, crashes Cybertank.]... Damn it!
Musk Control Program: Get out of here!
DOGE Bits: Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes!...
Trump Control Program: Busted again! God. And that was my best program.
END OF LINE.

10-seconds: That's the time elapsed between the first & last frames as the #SpaceX #Falcon9 rocket lifts 15,600kg (the heaviest payload for SpaceX thus far) of #Starlink gear to orbit.

At 9:44am (ET) and under a beautiful blue sky, #SpaceX launched a #Falcon9 rocket sending 46 #Starlink satellites to orbit.
It's a nice start of the week for the Space Coast.
Early morning launch for SpaceX, with the SXM-8 satellite for SiriusXM, at 12:26 a.m. EDT from SLC-40 on the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Unfortunately the clouds did not clear out in time for the launch.
Tesla expects construction costs of 1.065 billion euros. From July 2021, up to 12,000 employees in three-shift operation are expected to produce around 500,000 vehicles per year in the first expansion stage.
SpaceX's 60th launch of 2022 carried 54 more Starlink broadband internet satellites into low Earth orbit at 4:34 a.m. EST
At 1:16pm (ET) today (Wednesday, December 5, 2018) #SpaceX successfully launched and (quasi-) landed a shiny-new #BlockV #Falcon9 rocket, the #CRS16 mission carrying supplies (including non-moldy mouse food) to the International Space Station.
This was the scene this (Thurs) morning as the #SpaceX recovery team was removing the legs from the #ArabSat6a #FalconHeavy center core. The #SpaceXFleet returned to @portcanaveral at 2am, carrying the successfully landed first stage. It’s on its side (and the top is missing) after high seas caused the rocket to tip over.

I'm running out of superlatives to describe the #FalconHeavy, so I'll try to stick to the facts: this is a single, 646-second exposure of the #SpaceX #STP2 launch from 45th Space Wing at 2:30am (ET) Tuesday morning.
You're not seeing double -- those are side-by-side landing streaks. The launch sound is amazing, but the sonic booms from this close? Holy s***.
