Elmina Castle, in the town of Elmina, was built by the Portugese, conquered by the Dutch, and sold to the English. Under all three powers, slaves were sent to the New World.
The castle was built in 1482 and is the oldest fort and European structure in Africa. It was a notorious slave fort.
Female slaves were kept in this room at Elmina Castle. The doors on the right were covered with bars and opened into a courtyard. From there the governor stood on a balcony and chose which woman, or women, he was going to rape. Any who resisted were subjected to torture and death. Any he did not choose were fair game for the soldiers. In the peculiar ways of the Europeans at the time, any woman who became pregnant was not sold into slavery but sent to live in the near-by town of Elmina. I guess these guys could not sell their children into slavery. Many of the Europeans' descendants still live in Elmina.

Elmina Castle is St George's Castle. Founded in 1482 t is the oldest remaining colony building in Africa, with the oldest Christian church inside. It was held and expanded by several nationalities including the Dutch, Portuguese, Danish, Swedish and the British. It was used for trade including holding slaves before transportation across the Atlantic to the Americas.
