Having sat and watched the pictures appearing daily on the internet since the arrival into Fairford of 6 USAF heavy bombers, decided this week to do something about it. So, early start to get to Fairford for sunrise (0448, if you're interested!) in order to get some sunrise shots. Was rewarded with a lovely sky framing the B-1s sat by the Marston Meysey crash gate.

This would all have come to nothing, though, if I had not met a fellow spotter with a set of steps, as I was woefully unprepared in that regard.

A KC-135 Stratotanker from Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., refuels a B-1B Lancer during a training exercise Sept. 23, 2014, over South Dakota. For more than 50 years the KC-135 has provided the core aerial refueling capability for the Air Force. The aircraft can travel up to 1,500 miles with 150,000 pounds of transfer fuel, which enables the Air Force to project rapid, flexible military power. Rockwell International (now part of Boeing) B-1B "Lancer" (sn 85-0081) named "Equalier" with 28th BW in Jul 1988. Nosegear collapsed at Diego Garcia Dec 14, 2004. This caused the B-1 fleet to be grounded pending inspection of the nose landing gear. The plane had taken off from Diego Garcia on the way back to Ellsworth but was forced to return due to an abnormal nose landing gear indication. It landed and taxied back to its parking spot, idled for a while, then the nose just fell to the ground. Named "After Shock" with 127th BS/184th BW in Sep 2000 34th BS Active sep08 jul14

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam (Feb. 6, 2017) - Twelve U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancers assigned to the 9th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron, deployed from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and the 34th EBS, assigned to Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., sit beside one another on the flightline Feb. 6, 2017, at Andersen AFB, Guam. The B-1s are highly versatile, multi-mission weapon systems capable of tracking, targeting and engaging moving vehicles as well as allowing aircrew to receive targeting data from the Combined Air Operations Center or other command and control assets to strike emerging targets rapidly and efficiently. The U.S. military has maintained a deployed strategic bomber presence in the Pacific since March 2004, which has contributed significantly to regional security and stability. This is the same aircraft that was here in the previous Air Power Over Hamoton Roads in 2011. Last night's show was rained out and rain is forecast for this afternoon.

*** Update: Today's show was cancelled after the US Army Golden Knights completed their skydiving show. The F-22A Raptor Demonstration aircraft was at the west end of RWY 8, when a thunderstorm and rain moved into the area at around 2pm.
