Macarena Valdés Muñoz
Born: Hualañé, Maule Region, Chile – 23/12/1983
Died: Tranguil, Panguipulli, Los Ríos Region, Chile – 22/08/2016
Macarena Valdés was a Chilean Mapuche environmental and human rights activist known for her steadfast opposition to the construction of hydroelectric projects on the Tranguil River. Born in Hualañé, she spent much of her life in Santiago before moving in 2014 with her partner Rubén Collío and their children to the Mapuche community of Newen‑Tranguil in southern Chile, where they lived according to their cultural and spiritual values and defended their ancestral territory
In the Newen‑Tranguil area, the Austrian company RP Global Chile Energías Renovables S.A., together with the Chilean company SAESA, had begun constructing a hydroelectric plant on the Tranguil River, resulting in the felling of native forests and the flooding of ancestral cemeteries (eltuwe). Valdés and Collío became key figures in the community’s resistance to the project, organizing demonstrations, road blockades, and formal complaints about environmental violations and the lack of required legal permits. On 1 August 2016, the community blocked national route CH‑201 near the Argentina border in protest against the project.
On the afternoon of 22 August 2016, Valdés was last seen alive before she was due to attend a medical appointment and catch a bus for her young child. Her 11‑year‑old son later found her body hanging from a rope in her home in Tranguil. Initial investigations by the Chilean police, the Forensic Medical Service, and the local prosecutor’s office concluded that she had died by suicide. However, her family and the Newen community rejected this explanation due to the threats she had received related to her activism.
In 2018, a forensic doctor hired by Valdés’ family raised serious doubts about the suicide ruling, noting that the absence of vital injuries to her neck suggested she may have already been dead when she was suspended, and recommending further autopsy. Following these expert analyses, the case was reclassified from “suicide” to “discovery of a corpse,” and questions remain about the involvement of third parties in her death.
Her death sparked public outcry and condemnation from human rights organizations and environmental groups, who argued that she was killed in connection with her opposition to the hydroelectric project. Activist campaigns such as #FueHomicidio and #ALaNegraLaMataron have been used to demand justice and highlight the risks faced by environmental defenders. Macarena Valdés is seen by many as part of a broader pattern of violence against activists defending land, water, and indigenous rights in Latin America, similar to other murdered activists such as Berta Cáceres and Marielle Franco. I publish this series of characters to awaken consciences and reveal injustices committed by those in power against courageous individuals. Each story aims to remind the public, especially young people, that the people must be aware of their rights, that injustices must not be forgotten, and that remembering history can inspire acts of courage, solidarity, and resistance. These individuals paid with their lives for standing up to defend truth, freedom, and human rights.
After building roughly 60 vehicles from movies and TV series, I felt that building cars from music videos might be fun too. Those don't come much cooler than the 33 three window Ford 'The Eliminator' used by ZZ Top. Progress so far has been very swift. The picture also shows some of my building process, with some reference material and a drawing handy.
Something I've been meaning to rebuild for years since the flared balloon pieces came out in red (my original build is one of my earliest flickr uploads). The untimely passing of bass player / vocalist Dusty Hill in July got my ass into gear. ZZ Top's Eliminator Hot Rod, with repositionable band riser and billboard. Physical build, but photoshopped decals and hole in the billboard's "P".
Last year four Sandhill Cranes showed up in my yard and the neighbors yard.
One of the immature ones went missing, but, the other three stayed till late fall.
I was hoping that they would return this year.
Then several weeks ago they did.
Both of the adult cranes and with two big immature young cranes from this year.
Just like last year. Pretty cool!
They were feeding on strawberries and night crawlers in the neighbors front yard.
So, I was able to just walk across the street in our subdivision and get some shots.
I did get some "family" shots in my yard like last year.
It wasn't especially easy, as there is so much manmade stuff that gets in the way.
I was able to work in close and eliminate it in most of my shots.
I love the color and patterns of the young cranes feathers.

Not quite the car ZZ Top used as a prop in the promotion of their Eliminator album (ca. 1983), but it was a treat to see such a unique car on display at a local show 'n' shine.
Let's hope that the Senators ELIMINATE the Penguins tonight for a chance to reach the Stanley Cup finals!
The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City. It is located between Southwark Bridge (downstream) and Blackfriars Railway Bridge (upstream). The bridge is owned and maintained by the Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Construction of the bridge began in 1998, with the opening on 10 June 2000.
Londoners nicknamed the bridge the "Wobbly Bridge" after participants in a charity walk on behalf of Save the Children to open the bridge felt an unexpected, and, for some, uncomfortable, swaying motion on the first two days after the bridge opened. The bridge was closed later that day, and after two days of limited access the bridge was closed for almost two years while modifications were made to eliminate the wobble entirely. It was reopened in 2002.
The southern end of the bridge is near Globe Theatre, the Bankside Gallery and Tate Modern, the north end next to the City of London School below St Paul's Cathedral. The bridge alignment is such that a clear view of St Paul's south facade is presented from across the river, framed by the bridge supports.
The nearest London Underground station is Mansion House.

INNER DOG: "We have to pour the succulent soil on top and nobody will miss Lucy."
BRUNO: "You did a great job hitting her on the head three times with a shovel."
The old story, worth re-telling:
This happened decades ago. In Iowa, highway department maintenance crews cannot mow down wildflowers along state highways. They can only mow 'weeds', and the weeds have to be specifically included on a legislatively-produced list. It came to pass that in some locations, sunflowers growing along the highways, in ditches, were so tall that they reduced visibility.
The state legislature, acting on a request from the highway department, declared the sunflower a noxious weed, so that these patches could indeed be mowed.
Unfortunately, the sunflower is the state flower of Kansas...where the legislature there took offense at the weed designation. The Kansas legislature then added the Goldfinch -- Iowa's state bird -- to its list of declared pests (rather than protected songbirds), eliminating its protection.
The situation was ultimately resolved, but does illustrate the seriousness and solemnity with which state legislatures pursue their responsibilities. True story.
I have been thinking about building the ZZ Top Eliminator for a few weeks now, without it going anywhere in particular. Last week, however, prompted by the LUGNuts 'Life or Death' challenge, I finally got around to making some concrete plans and once those were done, the car came together very quickly.
“You got to whip it up
And hit me like a ton of lead
If I blow my top
Will you let it go to your head?” ~ ZZ Top
Jambhala is the God of Wealth and appropriately a member of the Jewel Family. In Hindu mythology, Jambhala is known as Kubera. Jambhala is also believed to be an emanation of Avalokitesvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. There are five different wealth Jambhalas; each has his own practice and mantra to help eliminate poverty and create financial stability.
Gyalten Sogdzin Rinpoche said that Jambhala is the protector of all Lineages and of all sentient beings from all sickness and difficulties. Jambhala is a Bodhisattva of material and spiritual wealth as well as many other things, especially of granting financial stability.
”Because in this world, there are all kinds of wrathful and negative emotions or bad spirits, and sometimes they will harm you and other sentient beings, Dzambhala must take on such a wrathful and powerful form to protect us from these harmful spirits and negative karma. Especially, Dzambhala helps us minimize or decrease all misfortunes and obstacles and helps us increase all good fortune and happiness.”

Not sure exactly what kind of car this is, I'm guessing a Ford Model B but if you know different let me know. This is 3 exposures with -1+ stops bracketing, then Photomatix for HDR and tonemapping, and finally Photoshop for the finishing touches.
Thank you once again Tigersgirl for the cool image.
A follow up image to my 'Walking with monsters' comp I did a little while back. Our heroine makes her way through abandoned buildings, felling any threat that gets in her way.

Akens and Niarr were members of the Hagah team of an unknown Makuta. They were manipulated into wrongly attacking their charge. All but two were eliminated as the Makuta fought back in self-defense, then vanished. Now Akens and Niarr are hunting down their old charge, with unknown intentions.
Hello ladies... We have gathered you three here as we have some important news.
The top three, is going to become a top two.
We have added up your scored for each shoot, as per usual and then added your two photo scores together to determine who is going to be in the Top two.
Let's get straight into it.The first girl into the finale, with an over-all score of 72.45/80 is....
MALI!
Congratulations Mali, you are one step closer to taking the title.
Now, it's between Charlotte and Amber.
Both of you did amazing jobs this week, but sadly only one of you will be in the top two. The girl who is in the top two, along side Mali with a score of 66.7/80 is....
CHARLOTTE!
Good work Charlotte! You are officially in the top two. You also made a big achievement this week, being the first girl to ever get a FULL 10 from the public vote.
Amber, I'm sorry. But this concludes your journey with us here. Your score was 61/80, it was close but not fully there. You should be proud of how far you've come, and many of the photos you produced! Good luck out there Amber.
The other parts of the finale will be coming soon!

Blah blah blah backstory end of days, etc.
Better than the original. And bigger, too. Probably because I spent a lot of poor people's money (which I stole, because that's what 'rich' people do, you know) to upgrade my collection since then.
I'm not sure what this tree was doing on a ridge in the desert to begin with, but the dunes have taken care to eliminate the aberration of its existence.
I went out to the Peak early this morning hoping for the forecast mist/fog but no such luck. Seeing as I was out there I decided to have a drive around and scout out some locations. I found myself drawn to Curbar by some moody skies. I set this shot up only to get rained on but I liked the 'test' shot so hung around (getting soaked). Eliminates Wall is a very well known climbing area, not for the feint of heart! This image took some processing, the sky was a right bugger! Lots of noise but I think this is about as good as I could get, hope you like it.
