One of the world's smallest owls, they are tiny and weight is only 40 grams! and is the size of a small songbird!
This guy landed right beside us and we used a flashlight to light him up providing a much more natural image and probably better for the bird also.

It's amazing what you find when look a little closer. Nestled among the ruins of Ruigh nan Clach I found these amazing Lichens. I think they're called Elf Ears, but if anyone wants to correct me, then feel free.
Had been given some inside info as to wehre I might find these beauties here in Cardiff and yep, on an old stump down in forest Farm in Cardiff these were the focus of attention. Some nice older gent was there too, he said the bird hide was busy today, not surprised, as was dry this afternoon after some rain this morning.

Their calls echo through the lower canyons of the Huachuca Mountains. Spring mating rituals have begun. Although not a fan of "lighting up" owls, these gnomes and their off springs, have nested in the same yard for 18 years and do not seem to mind all the attention.
For an hour after sunset they begin to feed on insects, then the lights go out leaving them to the night.
Elf Owls are the world's smallest Owl, about the size of a sparrow weighing in at 1.4 ounces.
