The presence of African elephants helps to maintain suitable habitats for many other species. In central African forests, up to 30 percent of tree species may require elephants to help with dispersal and germination. They play a pivotal role in shaping their habitat because of the enormous impact they have on factors ranging from fresh water to forest cover.

NEPAL, Royal Chitwan-Nationalpark
Rhinoceros: since 1973 the population has recovered well and increased to 544 animals around the turn of the century. To ensure the survival of the endangered species in case of epidemics animals are translocated annually from Chitwan to the Bardia National Park and the Sukla Phanta Wildlife Reserve since 1986. However, the population has repeatedly been jeopardized by poaching: in 2002 alone, poachers killed 37 individuals in order to saw off and sell their valuable horns.[6] Chitwan has the largest population of Indian rhinoceros in Nepal, estimated at 605 individuals out of 645 in total in the country.
Der Park ist bekannt für die Population des Panzernashorns, die bis zur Jahrtausendwende auf 544 Tiere und bis zum Frühjahr 2015 auf 645 Nashörner[6] angewachsen war. Seit 1986 werden alljährlich Tiere von Chitwan in den Bardia-Nationalpark und in das Suklaphanta-Wildreservat übersiedelt. Die Population war aber immer wieder durch Wilderei stark gefährdet: allein im Jahre 2002 haben Wilderer 37 Tiere grausam getötet, um das kostbare Horn absägen und verkaufen zu können.[1] Die letzte Zählung im Jahr 2011 ergab insgesamt 503 Nashörner im Park, im selben Zeitraum starben zwei Tiere durch Wilderer. Bei der Zählung im Frühjahr 2015 wurden 645 Tiere in Nepal gefunden[6], davon 605 im Chitwan-Nationalpark[8], während gleichzeitig in den letzten drei Jahren kein Tier durch Wilderer ums Leben kam.

Lalitpur oder Patan ist die drittgrößte Stadt in Nepal nach Kathmandu und Pokhara.
Lalitpur liegt im Kathmandu-Tal am Südufer des Bagmati im Distrikt Lalitpur und bildet mit Kathmandu eine Doppelstadt. Um das Jahr 1000 war sie mit etwa 100.000 Einwohnern die zehntgrößte Stadt der Welt.Die Geschichte der Stadt geht mehr als 2300 Jahre zurück. Der Überlieferung zufolge ist die Stadt die älteste im Kathmandu-Tal und wurde im 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. von der Kirat Dynastie gegründet. Über viele Jahrhunderte war Lalitpur Hauptstadt eines eigenen Königreiches, das erst unter König Prithvi Narayan Shah im Jahr 1768 in das Königreich Nepal eingegliedert wurde. Ursprünglich hießen die Stadt und das Königreich Patan.

Weisse Elefanten gelten in buddhistischen Ländern als heilig, versprechen Glück und Wohlergehen. Doch die Art und Weise, wie sie gehalten werden, könnte widersprüchlicher nicht sein.Es läge nahe, dass die Tiere deshalb besonders verwöhnt werden. Doch ein Besuch bei Burmas weissen Elefanten entlarvt das Gegenteil.
Sechs der insgesamt neun weissen Elefanten, die in Burma in Gefangenschaft sind, vegetieren hier im Elefantenhaus in der Hauptstadt Nay Pyi Taw vor sich hin. Sie fristen ihr Leben auf ein paar Quadratmetern.
Ein Taxifahrer erklärt, die gefesselten Tiere seien ein Symbol für die Macht der Militärs. Es sei also alles unter Kontrolle.
Tatsächlich bestätigt ein prominenter burmesischer Elefantenexperte, der Angst hat, namentlich genannt zu werden: Höchste Armeegeneräle und ihre Entourage besuchten die weissen Elefanten in der Hauptstadt Nay Pyi Taw regelmässig.
Auch einer der beiden Vizepräsidenten des Landes gehöre zu den wöchentlichen Besuchern. Sie alle glaubten, die Tiere würden Glück bringen und die Macht erhalten.

A taxi driver explains that the tied animals are a symbol of the power of the military. So everything is under control.
In fact, a prominent Burmese elephant expert, who is afraid of being named, confirms that the highest army generals and their entourage visited the white elephants in the capital Nay Pyi Taw regularly.
One of the country's two vice presidents is also one of the weekly visitors. They all believed the animals would bring good luck and maintain power.

Meine Chobe-Bush-Lodge befindet sich in de Nähe von Kasane. Von hier aus befahren wir den angestauten Chobe mit dem Flachboot, Von hier aus sehen wir einen fantastischen Wildreichtum. Im und am Fluss wimmelt es von Krokodilen, Flusspferden , Büffeln, Elefanten und vielem weiteren Getier.
Paradiesisch schön.

My Chobe Bush Lodge is located near Kasane. From here, we travel down the dammed Chobe River in a flatboat, where we see an incredible abundance of wildlife. The river and its banks are teeming with crocodiles, hippos, buffalos, elephants, and many other animals.
It's paradise on earth.
Exactly, you find a relatively small object, take your camera with a strong wide-angle lens and go to diving station :-). Then 100 mm icicles become huge stalactites of ice.
Wie macht man aus der Mücke einen Elefanten?
Genau, man finde ein relativ kleines Objekt, nehme seine Kamera mit einem starken Weitwinkel und begebe sich auf Tauchstation :-) ...dann werden aus 100 mm großen Eiszäpfchen riesige Stalaktiten aus Eis...
