I thought maybe a $1 or $2 as this guy is a regular vendor who gets his stuff at storage unit auctions. Nope $7. Needless to say I passed. There was also a new rerelease mint in package there for $10. Again, I can't figure where they get their prices.
Happy New Year to all my flickr friends. This is my last batch of pics from 2012. Enjoy and discuss.

This was my first time working with a water-slide decal. I'm surprised at how well it came out. It did take a couple of attempts to find a shade of yellow that would show up over the pistachio green.
I soldered up the amp I designed. It's horrifically inefficient but sounds beautiful! Only got one channel for the time being but maybe I'll make up another...
Fun specs: class A, 10W into speaker, mono
My first go at soldering the components onto a custom circuit board. No, my remote control didn't break--I'm building my own MintyBoost. Right now, it overheats and doesn't connect for charging--anybody see a short up there?
It clips onto your waistband and when you open it up, you can read your step count. It always seemed upside down to me unless I was wearing it.
Taking things apart is fun. Details here.
Orchestral music and digital sounds on one end of the spectrum; live electronics and visualizations on the other—since 2002, these have been the programmatic antipodes of the Big Concert Night staged by the Ars Electronica Festival, Brucknerhaus Linz and Bruckner Orchester Linz. The visualization is by Arotin & Serghei (AT/RU).

Dick Smith Electronics at Westfield Whitford City Shopping Centre at Hillarys, in Perth's outer northern suburbs. This was following the receiver's sale with the announcement made on February 25, 2016 that all stores (301 in Australia and 62 in New Zealand) would be closing over the following eight weeks with sale starting the following day February 26.
These shots were taken early April 2016 around half way through the closure process. Notably Dick Smith branded TV's have been more difficult to sell with customers wary of warranty issues due to the retailer's demise. The Dick Smith online business has been bought by Ruslan Kogan and was intended to be relaunched in June 2016, but instead was done after closure of the final stores on May 3.
Slightly updated PCB. Now the boards are blue, the pads are gold plated, only 1mm thick and the silkscreen has been revised and now shows Arduino pin functions for PORTC and PORTD.
This batch of 25 boards was made by MakePCB.com - very affordable but also quite slow. My first order took about 5 weeks. GoldPhoenix just took about 1 week, but at a higher price.
I grew up with a father that could fix things, build things, tear things down and put them back together, and who was just comfortable around tools in general. For whatever reason, I never picked up that ability. I'm completely inept with most tools beyond the basics. Putting up a shelf is an afternoon task of pure frustration for me. And being a homeowner has not improved that situation at all.
Yet if you sit me at a computer, I can make it do wonderful things. Given my tools of choice (development environments, programming languages, etc.), I can really crack open the hood and let loose, commanding the raw processing power of the CPU to do my bidding on massive amounts of data. In fact, I make my living finding new ways to express that power in new and compelling ways, and then showing it off to convince others that my tools of choice are the best tools of choice.
Close the hood of that computer however, and all my work disappears. When my dad closed the hood of the van on an engine he rebuilt, he had a vehicle that would get him another 100k miles. This discrepancy has not gone unnoticed.
While I've never had the ability of those many tool-bearing manly men, I've always had the desire. As I progress in my career and find that I'm increasingly comfortable (bored?) with more complex computing tasks, the more I want to "get outside the box." Over the past few years I've become increasingly compelled by electronics and robotics, but it wasn't until just this year that I put my foot down and started venturing into new realms - the physical realm.
Even given my knowledge and experience, I've only been able to talk to things attached to the computer - that is until now.
This morning, with Paige off for an overnight stay at the grandparents, I broke out my ever growing stash of electronics and began hacking. I had taken many baby steps up to this point. I had previously gotten an ultrasonic range finder to report to the computer about the distance between it and the items in front of it, but that was only of limited use as I was still tethered back to the computer. I had also previously gotten two RF radio chips to talk to one another, but I hadn't figured out how to attach any additional sensors and report that data.
Above is a Parallax Ping))) ultrasonic range finder hooked to an Arduino development board, which has mounted to it an XBee RF radio. With the 9-volt battery pack it is completely autonomous - that is to say that it is physically disconnected from the computer. The Arduino is running a program that samples range data from the sensor about ten times per second, and then broadcasts that data over the XBee radio. Back at the computer I have another XBee radio that receives that data and pipes it into the computer via USB.
At this point I could do lots of interesting things with the data. As an example, I could store it in a database for charts and trends, and even display that chart in real-time across the Internet. In this case I use a simple socket server that takes serial data from the USB port and broadcasts it to any connected program. The connected program here is a Flash-based, Adobe AIR powered application that shows the distance in inches.
The wattage of the XBee radio I use here is capable of a 400-foot range, and I proved that by walking around the basement with the sensor and seeing my computer screen update in the distance. More powerful XBee radios can broadcast even as far as several miles.
I know full well that this isn't particularly impressive in the world of electronics, but it's a start. My start. There are many other far more ambitious Arduino-based projects already out there, but I feel like I've finally made that leap to getting outside the box. I have a few different projects in mind for myself, among which includes remotely flushing a toilet, and building some very interactive Halloween and Christmas displays. You know, the useful stuff, like rebuilding an vehicle engine.
Some old equipment that I did a trade deal back in the 70's. The tall rack on the right was a complete Collins HF CW, Phone Transmitter used by the Galveston Coast Guard back in the early days. Not sure of the model. Wish I had kept it, it would be worth its weight in gold today.
One of the easiest ways to sign off documents is the use of an electronic signature. It has been a very easy way for patients to sign off medical forms without having a lot of paper forms and trying to organize them all.
alguém já teve alguma experiência com uma dessas?
provavelmente-muito provavelmente, essa será a minha próxima cria.

How did the owner of this archaic radar station persuade Hippo Hardware to take it off his hands? Could it be that he had some especially tasty architectural fragments or coveted hardware?
Anyway, it's there now.
It's too modern to lend itself to a Steampunk project. The most obvious reuse would take advantage of the goggle-like viewing station for displaying visual art of some kind. The knobs, switches and buttons would allow the viewer to modify the image or change the content. The art would need to be pretty darn compelling to justify the time and expense of converting the device.
A cheaper alternative would be to place a visual art object inside the hood. The controls would adjust the lighting. The problem is that unless there were multiple stations that each offered a different experience the impact on the viewer would be minimal.
This is probably much like the decision tree others have conjured when contemplating what they could do with this contraption.
Let's just call it a white hippo and be done with it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hippo Hardware is an eclectic building salvage store specializing in hardware, lighting, architecture and plumbing from 1860-1960. We offer assorted collectibles, trinkets, whatnots, and whoziwhatsits depending on what we get in. The spirit of Hippo Hardware is to rejoice in the individual, the unique, and the original.
Hippo Hardware was officially established in 1976 after the founders Steven Miller and Stephen Oppenheim decided to turn a life of swashbuckling adventures into a second life of swashbuckling adventures. We live in the local, even for our customers far away. That means you will probably hear a story about burying a Porsche in a state park while you are asking about a faucet or see photos of our cashier's Saint Bernards while you're paying for a light fixture. We strongly support community projects, teachers, artists, adventurers, dreamers, and one-man-bands.
If you're looking for a hard to find hardware pattern or can't find the match to your lamp shade, we'd be happy to tell you if we have it, seen it, or know where you could get it.
To make sure you get what you need, we offer the following services:
Customizing - We do our best to make sure it looks just right. Our lighting shop can customize length, finishes, plating, and configuration. Our plumbing department will coordinate refinishing with local companies. The hardware department is able to darken, refinish, clean, and rebuild. Our services can vary depending on staff so please contact us with your project details.
Conveniently browse our online section of items! Please note: our online section is much smaller than our store selection, we do offer returns for online purchases but do not refund original shipping or provide return shipping. We ship on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
Trade in - Bring in what you have and we will offer you in store credit or cash. Email pictures first if you'd like to talk about it before you get here.
Mortise lock repair - Hippo is the only hardware store in Portland that offers full mortise lock repair--including French Door mortises and closet mortises! Our repair shop can diagnose and repair your mortise lock or perhaps we have a replacement if a repair is not an option. Shop prices are $80/hour. Please call our store and ask for Colin to speak about your repair!
Hippo Hardware has three glorious floors and 30,000 sq feet of building salvage to explore. Our inventory, and staff, is divided into four departments: Hardware, Lighting, Plumbing, and Architecture. We do our best to highlight our inventory full of unique items and reproductions on our website, but most of our stock is not online yet. Please contact us if you're looking for something you don't see here.
