Timothy Taubitz points to one of three computer screens as three students (center) try out AirDrive at the College of Engineering Design Expo in the Bob and Betty Beyster Building on the North Campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, on Thursday, November 30, 2023. Taubitz, is joined by team members George Paul, beside him on the right, and Thomas Kennings, across the board on the far left. All three are undergraduates in Electrical Engineering.

AirDrive: Reinventing the Wheel was created as part of Jiasi Chen’s EECS 452: Digital Signal Processing course. Chen is an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Autonomous vehicles are poised to remove manual steering, eliminating the traditional steering wheel to enhance interior comfort and lower production costs. There may arise scenarios, however, where human intervention is necessary for short durations. AirDrive provides an intuitive steering solution using computer vision with no moving parts. For the display attendees were invited to “Race your friends in a touch-less, real-life miniature Mario Kart!”
