Unfortunately soon as PPP won most seats, Mr Zardari is starting to show his real self. His silence on the popular demand for restoration of judiciary is not without significance.

Update .... 19/02/2013
.... Been having a trip down memory lane with this one today after seeing it appear in my stats and oh how much has changed. Somethings are worlds apart these days one being i have now quit smoking and i'm currently vapping mint chocolate so i've succeeded in my dream of a chocy fag.
The biggest difference though is my political-ness. The shock and horror of the voting mess and following betrayal of Lib Dem voters by Nick Clegg got me for the 1st time looking up all the parties and reading up on there history. This lead to me becoming keenly interested in politics and i've joined the Labour party as a result, Really after looking into all the parties they where more suited to my views all along and i love how the party is developing.

The evening before the elections, a young girl traveled with her family to their hometown in order for her parents to vote. Busloads traversed the countryside that night to allow voters a chance to reach the precincts where they had registered--but did not currently live.

Parliamentary elections are coming up. Already we've had one bomb in our city related to the election—a very loud IED detonated with no casualties in front of a female candidate's home on the west side of town a few nights ago. As the election approaches, we expect but hope against increasing divisive activity.
My hat's off to the brave national men and women willing to risk their lives to do something for their compatriots.
But is it really a democracy if women are so strongly threatened against voting (not to mention running as a candidate, obviously) that only a tiny percentage of them make it out to the polls, and some of those that do pay the price in their own blood? How do you move a country from a condition of institutional injustice to an even relatively level democratic playing field? It seems clear that democracy (or any form of representative government) can't always be the right choice, because a system which favors the majority voice ...
Well, it favors the majority voice. And those either without a majority (various ethnic groups) or without a voice (women) are effectively either run over or run off. Not to mention the unfortunate effect that Afghanistan's dismal literacy rate has on the voting process. Many people, I would venture 95 percent of people, simply vote along ethnic lines, promoting corruption, nepotism, unmerited officials and, ultimately, lack of real positive change. In Afghanistan's case, democracy may actually prevent progress by handing power into the same wealthy Pashto male hands and blocking access to the means of information and governance to the same impoverished Tajik and Hazara female hands (to generalize), ad infinitum.
This was and in many ways still is the case with the human rights issues facing African-Americans all throughout American history, just for one example. Had the white racists in the South had their vote we would still be in the days of 3/5 or worse. Even today if they had their vote on some of these issues we would probably still see negative budget movements and domestic policy changes regarding black Americans.
In some cases, the government that protects best listens the least to the "voiced" of its people. I feel it's the same here, but I'm not sure what options that leaves the Afghan government which is already plagued with so many internal and external problems.
