Olympic National Park is home to a temperate rain forest with old growth trees, like this western red cedar, which have grown and protected the area for hundreds of years.

The thick bark on these trees can withstand fire and allows them to thrive in a myriad of conditions. The 12-14 feet of rain the area receives each year helps keep these trees well nourished. The mosses, ferns and lichens create a jungle-like atmosphere that seems out of place so far north.

The last few leaves on this Elder sapling take on a rich Ruby coloured tint as the Autumn days set in.

Century old cypress trees line the road to the long abandoned Coast Guard Receiving Center at Point Reyes National Seashore. They are a rugged stoic bunch with multiple rough textured trunks that appeared to have separate minds of their own. Quiet as they seemed, as the afternoon breeze rippled through their upper branches, I was sure I could hear them whispering a quiet secret amongst themselves.

Elder Creek a tributary of the South Fork Eel Wild & Scenic River. This stream is a Registered Natural history Landmark and a United Nations recognized Biosphere Reserve. Angelo Coast Range Reserve. The reserve encompasses four aquatic and at least 26 terrestrial habitat types, including redwood groves, mixed conifer/deciduous forests, meadows, several types of chaparral, and the state’s largest virgin Douglas-fir forest community. Mendocino county, Northern California U.S.A.

After running their high hood GP up to Charlotte for extra horsepower and combining their train with more loads from Cullom, southbound Bloomer loads traverse their way to Gibson City for interchange with the CN. In sad, yet typical fashion, the Bloomer employees stuck the 3801 on the point due to the 7549 not having a modern air brake system. The 26L that the 3801 has is much more simpler to use versus the 49’s. How’s that to treat an elder?!

Het prachtige uitzicht over Melk vanaf de Abdij van Melk

Het stadje ligt aan de rand van de Wachau, een gedeelte van het Donaudal waar veel wijnbouw plaatsvindt en dat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO staat.

Gedurende de winter en regenrijke zomers kan Melk onder water raken door een hoge waterstand in de Donau.

In de 19e eeuw waren driemaal zeer hoge waterstanden. In 2013 stonden ook delen van Melk onder water. In tegenstelling tot elders in de Wachau was er in Melk geen metalen muur opgebouwd om het water tegen te houden.

The town lies on the edge of the Wachau, a part of the Danube valley where a lot of viticulture takes place and which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

During the winter and rainy summers, Melk can be submerged by high water levels in the Danube.

In the 19th century there were three times very high water levels. In 2013, parts of Melk were also under water. Unlike elsewhere in the Wachau, no metal wall had been built up in Melk to block the water.
