Great Crested Grebe - Podiceps Cristatus
The great crested grebe has an elaborate mating display. Like all grebes, it nests on the water's edge, since its legs are set relatively far back and it is thus unable to walk very well. Usually two eggs are laid, and the fluffy, striped young grebes are often carried on the adult's back. In a clutch of two or more hatchlings, male and female grebes will each identify their 'favourites', which they alone will care for and teach
Unusually, young grebes are capable of swimming and diving almost at hatching. The adults teach these skills to their young by carrying them on their back and diving, leaving the chicks to float on the surface; they then re-emerge a few feet away so that the chicks may swim back onto them.
The great crested grebe feeds mainly on fish, but also small crustaceans, insects small frogs and newts.
This species was hunted almost to extinction in the United Kingdom in the 19th century for its head plumes, which were used to decorate hats and ladies' undergarments. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds was set up to help protect this species, which is again a common sight.
The great crested grebe and its behaviour was the subject of one of the landmark publications in avian ethology: Julian Huxley's 1914 paper on The Courtship‐habits of the Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus).

UK breeding:
4,600 pairs

The elaborate facade is all that remains (above ground) of St. Paul's Cathedral in the historic center of Macau. The cathedral was built in 1620-ies, mostly by Japanese Christians expelled from Japan. It was destroyed by fire during a typhoon in 1835 (at the first glance the typhoon should have brought enough water to quench the fire, but obviously it did not happen).

Albi is a French town located in the department of Tarn, of which it is capital, in the Occitania region, with 51 199 inhabitants. It is located on the banks of the Tarn River. The clays of this river were the raw material to elaborate the red bricks that characterize its local architecture, whether in its cathedral, in its houses, bridges, palaces, etc.
This color of the whole city makes life very difficult and complicated for the photographer because everything is the same color and from a distance it looks like a reddish spot without any appeal.
I took advantage of the Tarn River to give it some joy and with care and much patience I have managed to enhance the different tones somewhat.
Really inside it is not anything from the other world, but it is a very happy city where there are always concerts, popular parties and a lot of people willing to have fun.
To highlight the area of the cathedral and its surroundings and also the Tarn River as it passes through the city.
I don't know if it shows that I have family in this city.
If you expand it, clicking on it, you can see it with all its detail.<b
With their elaborate headdresses, the crowned pigeons are probably the most beautiful pigeons. They look majestic and impressive - but can also be different as we see in this photo. Deep down inside, they're looking just as sweet as sugar!

What if everything around you Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection
Is it all you want it to be?
What if you could look right through the cracks?
Would you find yourself
Find yourself afraid to see?

Michigan trip with WarblerWhisperer LLC.
We had so much fun and success with this species. Check out Mike Diersing's Flickr for another more elaborate set-up we used. We even ran across a rare variant adult male who had a near complete eye ring on both sides of his face. An interesting comparison to his western 'cousin'. I'll post an image of him down the road.
Michigan 2022 dates are now available for those interested. Interested or not thanks so much for your visits, and comments, and favs!
Elaborate stone masonry is a characteristic of the landscape in Hinohara and Okutama municipalities. It is needed to build houses, Shinto(u) shrines, play ground for children, car parking space etc. as the flat land is scarce.
This photo was taken at a settlement on the riverside of the Akigawa, a tributary of the Tamagawa.
One circular structure, which frames the Borrowdale Valley, is believed to have been made from local slate and created by a “very talented [and] patient individual”.
The artist has been compared to Banksy by the local village because it is unclear who is behind several structures. A number of hikers have shared images online after spotting them while out walking.
This stone-arched bridge was built to reach the Glasgow Necropolis. It is called the "Bridge of Sighs" because of the countless funeral processions who used it to cross the Molendinar Burn (river). The cemetery is filled with 3,500 elaborate monuments to some of Scotland's wealthiest and famous people. An example is the statue atop the Doric column on the left. The 12 foot sculpture erected in 1825 represents John Knox. He was the major force behind Scotland's Protestant Reformation during the 16th century.

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region.
The Peacock Fountain was bought by the Christchurch Beautifying Society from money bequeathed by John Thomas Peacock, a trader, politician and philanthropist. The fountain was unveiled in 1911, moved to a new location some years later, and put into storage in 1949. After a $270,000 renovation, it was commissioned again in 1996, in its third location in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. It has an elaborate colour scheme and is a much photographed tourist attraction.

The great crested grebe is a delightfully elegant waterbird with ornate head plumes which led to its being hunted for its feathers, almost leading to its extermination from the UK. They dive to feed and also to escape, preferring this to flying. On land they are clumsy because their feet are placed so far back on their bodies. They have an elaborate courtship display in which they rise out of the water and shake their heads. Very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs. What they eat: Mainly fish (Courtesy RSPB).
Thanks for viewing my photos and for any favourites and comments, it’s much appreciated 👍
(Wikipedia) ||||| Ezinge (Gronings: Aisen or Aizing) is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Westerkwartier, about 15 km northwest of the city of Groningen. Ezinge is the oldest, constantly inhabited village in The Netherlands and is in archeological context referred to as "the Pompeii of the North". Ezinge was a separate municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Winsum. The village is a legally protected heritage district within the Middag- Humsterland region which itself enjoys the status of Dutch National Landscape and can be found on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage. The main sight of the village is the early 13th century church which stands separated from its tower. The tower is connected to an old schoolbuilding. The three buildings are located on an artificial dwelling hill, known as a terp, with the village and pastures around it, covering a quarter and three quarters, respectively, of the slopes. According to the Dutch Museum of National History, Tacitus has been to Ezinge. Whether true or not, both Tacitus and Pliny the Elder wrote elaborately about the terps and the Frisii and Chauci, the people dwelling upon them. (wikipedia)
Elaborately carved Zanzibar doors manifest the cultural roots of the Swahili coast in Eastern Africa. The clash of Swahili, Arab, and Indian traditions is most notable in the design of Zanzibar doors. These giant teak masterpieces tell stories of the residents’ social status, religion, and profession.
These elaborate eroded pockets in the Navajo Sandstone wall of the San Rafael River canyon are called tafoni. Their origin is debated among geomorphologists. Possible explanations include the leaching of minerals that cement some parts of the rock making it more resistant to erosion, variation in the velocity of wind currents blowing across the rock, or differential patterns of rock breakdown (weathering) due to temperature variations. This is yet another clear failing of science, despite squandering tens of dollars of taxpayer money on research to study geomorphological processes.
Using intuition and creative thinking as guides, I have an alternate explanation which works just as well as “science” to explain these formations. I believe that tafoni are constructed by a species of small humanoid creatures, who etched these pockets into the stone as places to escape the elements. They were contemporaries of the ancient Greeks, and were impressed with the architecture and stonework at Petra, thus producing aesthetically appealing arches such as the ones shown here. Although no remnants of these microhumans remain (they were probably consumed by packrats around 2000 years ago), their excavations (tafoni) can be found throughout the world, a testament to their diligence and perseverance.

The elaborate auditorium of the theatre is designed according to the atmospheric style which was popular in movie houses built in the 1920s. This style simulates an outdoor theater-going experience. The Coronado's auditorium walls are decorated with the facades of gilded Spanish and Italian-style buildings, and the ceiling looks like a deep blue sky filled with twinkling stars and floating clouds. The auditorium is full of gilded detail.
Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo (right) & Chiesa di Santa Cristina (left)
San Carlo Borromeo or San Carlo is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church. It mirrors the adjacent church of Santa Cristina and faces the Piazza San Carlo. The church was commissioned in 1619 by Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, who had met the archbishop, and later saint, after which the church is named. The main designer is uncertain; the work has been attributed to both Baron Maurizio Valperga, and the engineer Galleani di Ventimiglia.
Santa Cristina is a Baroque style, Roman Catholic church. It mirrors the adjacent church of San Carlo and faces the Piazza San Carlo. The original layout was designed in 1620 by the architect Carlo di Castellamonte, and construction pursued until 1639. The project was only completed between 1715 and 1718, under the guidance of Filippo Juvarra, including the facade elaborately decorated with ovals and details with statues of saints and allegories of the virtues.

“I felt that I was in the sanctuary of the arts and sciences…Never did the labour of man show me the human race in such a splendid point of view. In the ruins of Tentyra [ Roman for Dendera] the Egyptians appeared to me giants.”
-Vivant Denon, French writer, artist and leading Savant of the Napoleonic Mission to Egypt, 1798-1801
When Denon and his team arrived at Dendera in 1802 – Middle Egypt, about 450 km south of Cairo, he was spellbound by what he saw. The partially buried temple still shrouded in sand, captured his imagination and revealed a treasure trove of ancient artifacts preserved to this day. Denon’s pioneering spirit, early account, and unwavering dedication to uncovering the mysteries of the past inspired countless who followed in his footsteps.
With its spectacular blue ceilings bedecked with the goddess Nut and astronomical scenes, those gorgeous Hathoric columns, the many rooms and chambers dedicated to Hathor’s attributes: the Menat necklace and sistrum rattle. All elaborately decorated with ancient Egyptian scenes, from pillar to ceiling, from decorated crypt to rooftop shrine.
The breathtaking highlight of the temple is the elaborately decorated hypostyle hall supported by 24 Hathor sistrum columns. Among Denderah’s unique features are fourteen small crypts (sacred storerooms under the temple foundations) one traditionally opened for visitors to explore.

The Allegiance is a beautiful, historic, comfortably appointed and elegantly restored circa 1838 mansion located in upstate New York in the Finger Lakes region. The mansion is tastefully decorated to reveal the grandeur of the Victorian era with its high ceilings, elaborate moldings, and spacious rooms. The grounds surrounding the estate include a "secret hidden" garden with an arbor and a 35 mile green way on the edge of the property.115

The Booted Racket-tail is an Andean hummingbird found from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia. This is a spectacular hummingbird - males have a short blackish bill, metallic green body, black wings, and elaborate tail. The tail is long and green, and the central two rectrices are extended with bare rachises tipped with blunt "rackets". Females are white below with green speckles and a white-tipped tail lacking racketed elaboration.
Both sexes of Booted Racket-tail show puffy white leg feathers. This very small hummingbird favors humid woodland edges in mid-elevations in the Andes.

Yes, It's beautiful, especially veiled with the fogs we've had hanging over Cheshire for the past few days,
but a structured, rigid beauty, maybe even an elaborate shell,
the energies over the years are strong here.....but I guess a lot of those energies come from their own inner truth.....
I can't help but feel the important essence of what it was once created for has been adapted and shaped by rules, expectations and the interpretations of another.....instead of simply just a space for one's own truth.

Or, one for the fan club. Fuji X-Pro1 plus Mitakon Speedmaster 0.95/35 wide-open and as close as possible. In fact, there are two types of cameras I like to work with, the Fuji X-system and the Leica M system (though I do have other cameras as well). I do appreciate the elaborate toolbox modern digital cameras have on offer, but, in the end, handmade photography is what I like best. And for that purpose, the Fujis and Leicas are hard to beat.
