Monday 8th May

"Day spent in some of the valleys and foothills of Mt. Falakro south and SW of Volakas, especially Petroussa and Pyrgi"

Third day of holiday. Woke after a good meal last night at 6.10am with no trips to loo in night! A first for ages & just before 6.20am alarm! A clear cold morning - First down to see the 4 or 5 moths in Martin's trap, nothing very exciting. Ilyia , Martin & self chatted over coffee from vac after we found the mugs. Good breakfast - eggie bread/toast, bacon & a HB egg. Bread, jam, cherry juice & more coffee. All ready before 9am leaving in rain & cloud, prepared for a wet day. Drove over mountains south to Petroussa & an open air theatre set in a river gorge. Spectacular setting but showers & clouds made first few hours uncertain. Nightingales singing, Tony clambered up a rock race to snap a Southern Comma! Later into a Chequered Blue . Up and down steps to bottom of gorge several times. Weather gradually got better & by lunch time c 1pm it got warmer. WE had called at Aldi on way and I enjoyed my apple turnover & pain au raisin.. No euros with me so I owe Martin for mine. Also some apple juice & treat, sticks of nougat & peanut brittle. Some nice butterflies & scenery. Later c 4pm we went up the mountain to Pirgy, where the same stream had been dammed . Beautiful flowers Ramonda and White Helleborines .

Back at hotel in Volakas c 7pm , after stopping for an ice cream on the way back. After a good shower and tidy up down to drinks with Richard, Ilyia & Tony's wife & Jon etc for a Fix beer outside with the hotel dog. Then supper , a huge wodge of lasagna & salad with red wine in litre jugs & so to bed.

Chocolate Brioche Rolls, rolled in egg and fried in cinnamon spiked butter. Served with blueberries, raspberries and crème fraîche.

Haberlea is a monotypic genus[3] of flowering plants in the family Gesneriaceae. The only member of this genus, Haberlea rhodopensis, is endemic to parts of Bulgaria and a small part of northern Greece, especially in the Rhodope Mountains.[4] Common names include Orpheus flower and resurrection plant because of the remarkable ability of Haberlea to survive very long periods of desiccation.[5]

The species is a stemless, evergreen perennial found in north-facing rocky habitats. Basal rosettes of dark green leaves bear trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of white, violet or purple in spring and summer.

Despite the zygomorphic nectar-producing flowers (which are considered an ancestral character) and the overall trend in Gesneriaceae, resurrection plant is only rarely pollinated by bees and does not have specific pollinators. Rather its evolution has switched in the direction of providing pollen as a reward and generalisation of pollinating insects - a trend that is observed in the other European member (Ramonda) of the more tropically and subtropically spread family Gesneriaceae. Active pollinators of Haberlea are found to be syrphids (hoverflies) and Lasioglossum morio (Hymenoptera, Halictidae) which are characterised by low preferential behaviour regarding the plants that they visit for food.[6]

Haberlea rhodopensis (pale lilac flowers) has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.[7][8]

Previously, in Eggie Tales, we learned that a mystery lies in the silver room...

Meanwhile Eggo has been spending his weekend partying the way he likes the most:

Listening to loud rock music on his Ipod. But this time the music was too loud. As a matter of fact, cracking loud! So loud it tragically cracked his eggshell!

Would that be the end of our little friend?

… Stay tuned!

What a great Sunday it was at the flea market! There were actually a lot of interesting things to look at, so I had to be choosey about what I bought. Some weekends there are loads of sellers set up, but they don't have anything we are interested in buying. Anyways, as soon as we walked by the entrance, I spotted a Cabbage Patch Kids doll underneath a table, in a container with other large items. I was intrigued by her red hair and cowgirl costume. I quickly noted her unique freckles on her face. The outfit turned out to be legit, though slightly stretched out from age. Colleen and I have wanted a cowgirl Cabbie for years (so we could name her after Joey's doll from the show "Friends"). She cost just $3 which was a total bargain!

As we meandered to the lower area of the flea market, I noted a huge box FILLED with sealed Kelly dolls. They were $5 each or 5 dolls for $20 (making them $4 each). All were pretty much holiday themed dolls, so I decided to walk around and see what else was there first. If they'd been regularly dressed Kelly dolls, I would have bought some straight away. I could easily spend all my money at this one booth. I rarely see Kelly dolls in the wild anymore, let alone boxed ones! There were some other cool finds, but I decided to save my money for the Kelly dolls. I originally picked out just five of them, because I didn't have any more money. But after debating about it further, Colleen and I decided to stop at the ATM located in the flea market building. It was too good an offer to pass up, and I was still reeling over some of the dolls I left behind. Specifically, I had been torn over picking Li'l Chick Nikki or Li'l Lamb Melody. I had decided on the lamb Melody, but I couldn't get Nikki out of my head. So she was the first one we scooped up on round two. I spent more time digging through the box making sure to select the best dolls. I tried to get ones that were unique, or characters like Tommy who I have fewer of to begin with. The Beach Time Kelly was a no brainer because she came with a ton of accessories. For the most part though, I stuck to the early 2000s dolls because I am most nostalgic for their style. But there were lots of mid 2000s dolls and "lemon heads" to see as well. I'm hoping the seller will be back with them again next weekend. She mentioned having a whole CASE of Kelly dolls at home still. I have no idea of their origins, but I've never seen so many Kelly dolls brand new at the flea market. If she's back again, I may have to get ten more dolls (even if that means another stop at the ATM, which has an annoying service fee, ergo why I usually avoid withdrawing money from it).

Children playing on the fresh tarmac. The red dot was meant for selfie point, but nicely warmed by the sun on the tarmac.

Kinderspel tijdens de publieksdag van de gerenoveerde Coentunnel. Als ze dit straks maar niet in het eggie gaan doen ...
