Second batch from own production no. 4 is now in shop.
An older negative printed on COT-320.
Left hand side Palladium, right hand side Palladium with 1 drop Na2 10% for a cooler tone and higher contrast, only for demonstration, not to my taste in this case.

The gain in knowledge is usually greater with difficult negatives. That's why I chose an older, very high-contrast negative (Efke R25) to test the limits of the new Fomatone batch.
So that even less experienced lithprinters can understand the problem with high-contrast negatives with extremely high light density, I will explain it again here.
To get a higher level of colour, the image has to be heavily overexposed. Strong overexposure requires a higher dilution of the lith developer in order to prevent a too fast blackening of shadows and midtones. However, at dilutions of 1+20 or higher, the developer is less stable, making reproducible results difficult. A higher dosage of restrainers such as potassium bromide or Lith D is therefore more sensible than a higher dilution.
Test SE5 Lith (1+20)
1st attempt of course already with overexposure
A+B+D+Water 20+20+20+800ml 10 minutes - no colour, no lith effect
2nd attempt A+B+D+Water 20+20+35+800ml plus 60% more overexposure (=45 seconds) 11 minutes – pale yellowish highlights, but snowball effect.
Back to tried and tested technology with a stronger lith developer and a second developer for more colour. Nothing new, just the familiar second bath with pyrocatechol.
Exposure time again extended to 80 secs.
1st tray SE5 Lith A+B+D+water 35+35+35+800ml 5:15 mins
2nd tray 600ml water + Pyrocatechol 40ml + Lith B 30ml + Ammonium chloride 20% 10ml 4 mins

Managed to make every mistake in the book when shooting these. Overexposed by 3 stops. Three of six frames (6x12), either double exposed, or frames overlapped. This is a 6 sec exposure! And even managed to muck up the development. But these were salvageable.

This paper, though labelled the same N grade, is much softer than Fomabrom N111 (version 2 of the print). I doubt this was the result of longer period it spent on the shelf.

Dawson's magnolia (Magnolia dawsoniana) is a magnolia species native to the provinences of Sichuan and Yunnan in China, usually at altitudes of 1400 to 2500 m.
It is a small, ornamental deciduous tree that can grow to heights of 20 m. Leaf shape is obovate to elliptic-obovate, 7.5-14 cm-long, and is bright green above and glaucous underneath. The white to reddish flowers are large (16-25 cm wide), fragrant, and appear before leaves. It was first discovered in western Sichuan in 1869 by Père Jean Pierre Armand and was introduced in western cultivation in 1908, when E.H. Wilson sent seeds from plants growing near Kangding, Sichuan, to Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. They are, however, rarely cultivated. Give me a camera and I'll take a picture of anything. Seriously. I think one of my best defining traits as a photographer is that I am just insatiably curious.
So, while waiting for brunch one day at the Pig 'N Pancake, I set my pinhole up on top of my glass of ice water, face down, and promptly exposed for the next eight minutes, the camera, not myself, Aaron.
Even though it looks like my camera is levitating above the glass, the entire frame is actually shot within the glass, hence why the grain of the wood table is distorted.
Anyway. Yeah.
I taught again today, and this seems to be the best way for me to recover, either taking more photos or posting one. Doing something creative to refill what I deplete teaching. Because I really do come out of these classes feeling depleted. I had a good group today and they all seemed to have a good time, so I am grateful for that, but goodness it is hard work and even more goodness I never feel satisfied with the job that I did. I guess part of it is that I set moderately unrealistic expectations for myself for each of these classes. I want all my students to rush right out as changed photographers, or with a fire lit under them. But I know this is not always the case, nonetheless, it doesn't keep me from expecting that of myself.
Thankfully I have a week until my next class starts. And I think these one day classes are actually the hardest to teach. It is supremely difficult to connect with so many complete strangers in such a short amount of time and then try to convey all the most important aspects of photography to them, to try to teach them in five hours what has taken me the better part of a decade to learn.
So I say, whew. And I go for a walk with a camera or go post a photo to Flickr, and that is how I recover and get ready for the next round.
